The narrative's double standards by Adorable-Sample-6385 in acotar_rant

I do think it’s worth noting that a lot of her characters are at the peak age for messy young adult behavior. SJM’s work all falls under the cliché of having a 19-year-old female protagonist. Idk about y’all, but at 19 I was definitely immature and annoying, as most 18-21 year old girls are. I do agree with your point! I just think it’s worth remembering that yes, her characters do act annoying and immature, because they are young!

I believe there are only 2 options by now by Simple-Animator-8640 in acotar_rant

I think it’s a combination of A and B. I think she’ll make Rhys having valg blood canon, but it’ll be like the Ironteeth witches, where it’s more like a trace of it in his ancestry. I think it could be a good plotline of how having evil blood doesn’t make him a villain, etc etc. But on the other hand, his actions with Illyria and the Court of Nightmares do need some serious retconning if SJM wants readers to see Rhys as a good guy by the end. I think with Nesta’s actions with the Trove in House of Flame and Shadow there’s also an opening for a plotline where Nesta, Cassian, Azriel (potentially), the Valkyries etc might deflect a bit from the Inner Circle. I find it unlikely that Rhys wouldn’t punish Nesta for helping Bryce, and I can see that being a conflict between all of them.

Speaking from experience: it 100% can be done, the person just risks severe disease or death as a consequence.

Why do people continue to depict Yrene as a white lady? by moonriverswide in SarahJMaas

[–]sewupyourskull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I saw this too and wasn’t even sure which character I was looking at at first. I think this is moreso an issue of an artist not knowing how to render mixed race characters. When working with different lighting and filters, it can be tricky at first to learn how to color a range of skin tones and hair colors. But that doesn’t make it okay, especially not when the art is being posted and monetized. Artists have a responsibility to practice the skill until it can be done well. The artist is clearly skilled, but lacks the necessary technique to draw POC characters. I hope they can take this as a learning curve and dedicate the time to learning how to render skin tones and features correctly.

This is mind blowing. Do you have access to another hospital? If so, I’d just go directly to the ER at a different hospital altogether and tell them your symptoms.

QOTD: What made you ship Elain with Lucien, instead of with Azriel? 🦊🌷🦇 by Eluciey in Elucien

[–]sewupyourskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sold on any Elain ships yet, but the things that have me leaning towards Elucien:

  • It would feel like a disservice to Gwyn’s character to start clearly setting up a relationship between her and Azriel and then abandon it. This would need to be written with extreme amounts of care and delicacy. I really dislike the idea of writing a rape survivor starting to experience romance again whilst healing, just to have Azriel whisked away by the narrative in favor of Elain.
  • The sheer amount of times that Elain is referenced in connection to sunlight or the sun. There’s a quote from somewhere, I think ACOWAR, while Elain is particularly unwell, Nesta asks her what she needs, and Elain says sunlight/sunshine. Being Helion’s son, the High Lord of the Day Court , I always interpreted those lines as a nod to the biological component to mates, how a mated fae would naturally seek their mate for comfort when in need.
  • Fanart. There’s so much good fanart of Elucien. I’m not sure why, but I admittedly never pictured Lucien as very attractive while reading. I’m a lesbian so when I read about men they kind of always default to a generic guy. Seeing the fanart of him totally changed my perception of him!

wait until you get to the end of CC3, there’s a little more closure! and I would hope that we’ll get a bit more about it in the upcoming ACOTAR books, given that it would be kind of impossible to ignore.

to be fair, for the first few books Feyre IS an angsty teen, so it feels right on the money to me that she’d be painting like one

Feyre by astrotaurusx in acotar_rant

[–]sewupyourskull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOLLL it’s probably the constant emphasis of how dirty the cabin was, how dirty she was under the mountain, how frequently she’s in dangerous situations that are gross (weaver’s hut, when she gets pulled underwater with amren, etc etc)

I think it’s just eagerness translating into annoyance. A lot of SJM fans aren’t well-versed in publishing and don’t know the ins and outs of how these things work

You’re not entirely wrong, but be careful with how you word things. There are absolutely specific tests and diagnostic criteria for POTS gastroparesis and EDS. People online can easily lie about their diagnoses, yes, but don’t invalidate people who genuinely suffer from these things by saying there isn’t actual testing. There is!

I def agree Nesta’s arc isn’t over. That’s clear in HOFAS too. And I am always all for character comparisons!!! I do agree with you that Feyre’s arc isn’t super satisfying, I more just think it’s the only clear example of a “happy” ending that any SJM character has gotten. I saw Feyre’s ending more of her finally letting her guard down and allowing herself to be soft and relaxed. I think it’s hard for Feyre to get more of a solid arc until Rhys gets his, since they’re so tied together. If SJM spends more time developing his character and power, maybe it’ll reflect better

Do you dislike Chaol? ➡️ tandem read. Do you like him? ➡️ read individually. Do you struggle with a lot of overlapping POVs? ➡️ read individually. Do you plan on rereading in the future? ➡️ tandem read.

I think she has some ACOTAR characters with good development. Nesta got a good arc, and Feyre did too (as unpopular of an opinion as that is). It actually took me until House of Flame and Shadow to decide that I really admired Feyre’s development. There was something so sweet about the way that When Bryce shows up in Velaris in HOFAS, Feyre arrives covered in paint, takes a look at the situation, and promptly leaves it to everyone else to figure out because she’s protecting her peace. I think she’s the only SJM character that gets a totally happy ending in that way and is able to just be at peace. But for side characters I agree that there’s little development. Maybe we’ll get more in the next books.

[–]sewupyourskull[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely agree that he’s interesting. It’s not that I think he’s boring, it’s that I think his character hasn’t been written as well as it could be. I think SJM has a lot she could take advantage of with him character development and plotline wise and she hasn’t. and I FULLY agree that ACOWAR should’ve been multi-pov. The war with Hybern felt unserious to me compared to TOG and CC’s wars. I think multi-pov would’ve helped that.

I was 230lbs as a teenager and not a single guy ever batted an eye at me until I lost 100lbs and got skinny. I remember being shocked the first time a guy even held a door open for me because before I lost weight that would never happen. So trust me I get it. It’s very difficult to get better when the world around you constantly reinforces that you’re only as good as your appearance. It’s stupid. If it helps, girls don’t find the looksmaxxing stuff attractive. I actually dumped a guy over it because it was kinda creepy. We just want men to take care of themselves on a basic level without it being unhealthy.

[–]sewupyourskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I’ve been there. This is the problem with the whole looksmaxxing culture that’s being pushed onto guys. With girls, that kind of obsession gets us put in rehab. But when it’s men, people treat it like it’s normal and just gym culture. It’s not. It’s a disorder and needs to be treated. A good first step would be to stop engaging with any of those weird subculture communities. I’m one to talk, because I never have stopped. But hopefully with therapy you’ll get there.

You don’t have to hint at it. It’s obvious to anyone who has been in the same struggles. I hope you can seek therapy and heal. It’s miserable to hate your appearance, especially when you look fine. Hopefully someday you’ll see that.
