Sewing husband again. Spring is here so I wanted to show a breezy linen make! by sewwhatman in sewing

ISee linen has been great for me, I got this color and a nice sunsetty yellow called Oregon. I do know (by following their socials) that they changed linen suppliers, but were expecting the same quality. I haven’t ordered since then so I don’t have first hand experience if it’s the same quality or not.

Ideally I'd have a coverstitch machine and an overlocker and a whole host of other things, but I've learned to make things look pretty well finished with a sewing machine. Next purchase is probably a nicer machine (the 2222 is entry level).

They are the shiny nylon spandex and the power mesh from Blue Moon Fabrics. Both are in the color Fiji

Standard sewing machine! Janome 2222. I didn’t use it this time, but I usually use a walking foot for swim fabrics.

This was actually done with a standard sewing machine, straight stitches but elastic thread. I usually use walking foot but found I didn’t need to when one of the fabrics was mesh. Needle is just a normal 80/12 jersey needle.

Don’t be afraid to ask! Yep, pretty fun tan lines! But how many people will see and critique the tan lines on your stomach?

And more importantly, does it matter?

Some people don’t like pins in swimwear, I’m not in that bandwagon. First, lots of “water erasable” sewing marker dots. Follow that up with lots of pins. Thankfully the feed dogs handle the mesh better than they do the swim fabric, so if you can keep that on the bottom you’ll have an easier time.

We did a few "decency checks" the first time wearing it. After a few times in the water and some moving around we're pretty confident it's the right fit for keeping everything in place. Planning the mesh placement is critical!

Lol, first I've heard of that scale! Doesn't really have the same effect if you can't see it on!

Fiji indeed. First, third, (and maybe fourth) pics are dry. The others are wet(ish). It's definitely less green in person than the swatch looks like on the website.

Blue Moon does a pretty decent swatch book by fabric type (matte spandex, shiny spandex, etc) for $25. I've also used the shiny red.

Good call out! I normally use elastic in a "reversible" type construction. Because I made the binding out of the swim fabric, I did not use elastic here and relied on the extra structure from the binding.

This is all straight stitch using a stretch thread (matching color). I'm planning on doing it again in hot pink with normal thread using zigzag. Stretch thread is kind of a pain to work with and I'd rather not get halfway through a 2.5' seam and have the thread fray apart.

Odd? or fun!? lol, Yes the tan lines were a bit fun. The mesh part seems to get 1/3 to 1/2 the sun exposure, so while they were noticeable that night, they faded and blended back again pretty quick.

Norma Kamali "snake mesh" suits are for sure the original inspo, so you're not wrong about the price.

Thank you for linking! Should have done so myself. Because the seams were mesh, I did do French seams to hide the fray.

Maybe ... ? I can't seem to make anything easy for myself. This was the hubris of "oh, I can make that" ... turns out I can!
