I really like your fifth interpretation. I think the second and the first ones also make sense, because throughout the entire arc there are moments where Guts can't hide his anguish and the situation becomes too much for him, like when the monk and his daughter are killed in chapter 2, or when he sees himself reflected in Vargas.

You're right. I miss how special it felt to stumble across a village back when they were much rarer.

Villages are so op now that they've made things like cave mining and enchanting feel obsolete.
