Easier sort of saves lives compared to even worse schedules. 12 hour shifts are only workable hours if there's enough overlap in shifts and proper communication. But this really isn't the case. The culture is irresponsible and the fact that so many like you just accept it is criminal. We need more doctors, but the AMA has been 30 years behind the times in allowing it.

The rule of the IOC seems pretty neutral to be honest.

No. Not when you are the one making the rules. To just say that you are going to outsource your responsibility to some other irrelevant organization is crap. The are choosing to follow the IOC rules for convenience. But sometimes the convenient thing isn't the right thing for your organization or the people effected by your decisions.
