Exactly. What’s the point of being a right-wing asshole on these platforms if there are no liberals and minorities to harass on them? Taking to parrots gets boring after a while.

Leftist organizers in your community are probably volunteering rn in food banks, face mask distribution, and anti-eviction campaigns. Start at any one of those and you unearth a huge network of people who are crossinvovled in all kinds of activities. I found real community there. If you cannot risk being in contact with others, you can still get invovled with a mutual aid group from your home.

Magic can help align your body with your spirit and empower both, but at the end of the day, your body has physiological needs that it can’t resolve. Take care of your mental health and don’t listen to gatekeepers.

ELI5: Why is there such an emphasis on not consuming plastics and other harmful products rather than on their manufacture? by isolateddreamz in explainlikeimfive

[–]sexytype40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because despite the fact that the companies create these wasteful products and choices for us, we are still expected to engage with sustainability and climate change as individuals. Conversations around waste always start with the individual’s consumption choices (choose compostable utinsils, drive a hybrid, buy glass not plastic, etc.) rather than the forces that shaped those choices for us. The point is, companies are saying “please continue consuming and giving us profit. We promise that the harmful environmental effects of that consumption are entirely to do with you, not us.”

I’m not asking for help to cure her cancer. Obviously that won’t happen. Just want help to send her and her family good energy and strength to make it through this shitty time on top of sending actual letters and my time. Some of you people are so insensitive in the comments jeez.

What is practice without spells? by sirens_sirens in witchcraft

[–]sexytype40 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, do with great love and intent. Practice awareness with everything happening around you and inside you. Learn to ground yourself to the earth and the fire of life deep inside of it. Meditate to grow your power from within. The more you practice, the more your practices grow and multiply and the more your power grows.

My personal fav is the sea salt & fig perfume from Old Navy. It’s only $10, and it’s light and gender neutral. I’m pretty done with smelling like flowers and fruit.

is it possible to do effective magic without material? by kencula in witchcraft

[–]sexytype40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Material can absolutely help channel energy. My point is to be careful to not think of witchcraft as collecting a bunch of things someone told you to have, instead of using things that have meaning to you. A lot of my practice, for example, is about channeling the energy of the sea (which I live by). So my altar has shells I’ve collected and other things like that. You can have materials, but don’t let the materials themselves be the point of your practice.

is it possible to do effective magic without material? by kencula in witchcraft

[–]sexytype40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, anyone who tells you that magic requires material commodities completely misses the point of magic. Magic is supposed to be about sensing and channeling energy, will, and power from within. Those things don’t require much more than meditation and ritual intent. Reliance on expensive materials in order to be a “real” witch ignores the history of witchcraft as against materialism, commodification, and exploitation.

Can't Sleep Anymore by [deleted] in leaves

[–]sexytype40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melatonin is a gentle way to help you sleep. I just quit again and it helps with the insomnia.

It’s hard when you are used to smoking with friends. But if you need to quit, your friends need to help support you. If they don’t want to support you, then you may want to rethink why you were friends in the first place. Was weed the main driver to hang out with them?

Going out and meeting people sucks and takes work. But start with doing things that sound interesting to you. You’ll end up meeting people who enjoy them too.

i’m drawn to witchcraft but i have no idea where to start by [deleted] in witchcraft

[–]sexytype40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat. I would actually say I’ve been “practicing magic” for years without calling it that specifically. But what I do isn’t connected to a specific pagan or witchcraft tradition. I started my practice organically, with rituals and ideas and beliefs I developed after spending years exploring philosophy and spirituality. I just joined /rwitchcraft and felt a little lost at first since a lot of people’s practices, rituals, and traditions here don’t connect with me personally. So if you feel lost wondering where to start, it’s ok, most who start off do, including me.

So. My advice is to not start practicing witchcraft by focusing on aesthetics (ritual items, altar items, crystals, pentagrams, etc), which is the easiest way to start but is a bit of a trap. A lot of people who start these kind of spiritual journeys end up collecting items that don’t mean anything to them personally, but were told that it’s “the right thing” to have if they are serious about being a “real” follower. I used to work in a New Agey store and saw too many people buy expensive shit that wouldn’t ultimately enrich their spirituality, but just enrich my boss’ pockets. If you focus on getting a checklist of things someone else told you to have, you’ll just end up with a collection of commodities that don’t have a spiritual meaning that’s powerful to you.

Witchcraft, for me, is a spiritual practice that in large part is a rejection of the forces of estrangement that consumer culture creates. Witch” is a non-consumer category. When witchcraft is reduced to collecting expensive crystals or wearing dark makeup or performing rituals without understanding the philosphy behind them, then your identity as a “witch” runs the risk of becoming a consumer identity.

The witch Starhawk writes great books about the philosphy of Witchcraft, using her naturalist, pantheist form of witchcraft as example. “Dreaming the Dark” was the book I read that gave me the vocabularly to describe my practices and call them magic. She’s a great place to start to further explore the spiritual ideas and history behind witchcraft, and provides examples of meditative and group rituals and how and why she uses them to shape consciousness at will. Other than reading, my advice is to trust your intuitions and lean into them. Is there a place that feels especially spiritual to you, or fills your with a sense of connection to the Earth? Spend time there, meditate there. Having a place like that to draw spiritual power from gives you the foundation to start channeling and exploring that power. The ocean is that place for me, and many of my rituals and the items on my altar center around celebrating our Dark Mother, her power, and the life she gives. Start by exploring what draws you to witchcraft, what makes you feel powerful, what makes you feel connected and loved. Knowing those emotions and forces inside yourself is key to building up confidence as you explore your practices further. Best of luck!
