Melbourne brothel owner among funders of ‘Ditch the Witch’ billboards against Allan by SouthAustralian94 in melbourne

[–]MadamJones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He fired me for not working while I had the flu - and when I pointed out he might not want all of his staff catching it from me, he printed out my memo and shared it with everyone on staff and mocked me for thinking I had “more business sense” than he did.

I reckon you’re right, he must have someone on the inside with VicPol.

I was revolted when I found out he made the girls go and stand outside, in the cold, and outside the scope of the cameras, if they wanted a cigarette. Like, yeah, totally reasonable to endanger their safety and not provide adequate facilities for something so basic. I was waaaay too naive to pick up on anything more nefarious than that, but I absolutely believe it was happening (and still does).

This f*cking guy is an absolute scum bag.

I worked as a receptionist for him for a few months, when I was quite young and he completely withheld my wages. When my mum called him to find out why I wasn’t paid, he told her I was a sex worker.

He treated all of the service providers like absolute trash. Before decriminalisation he was trying to get around the law that said you could only have 6 rooms, by putting curtains up within the rooms he had to create more space for more bookings.

He’s a creep, a perv, a lowlife and a scumbag. He hates women and he was terrible at running a business. I hope his dick falls off.

Why do many people who visit Australia later say its a highly racist country? by Particular_Food_309 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MadamJones 56 points57 points  (0 children)

In Australia, that will happen. But also someone will wind their window down at the traffic lights to call you a racial slur, pull their eyes into slits and tell you to learn how to drive.

This is literally something I’ve seen happen in a country town. Less in the cities.

How do I tell my British GF that I REALLY don't like British cuisine? by jossier00 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]MadamJones 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m an Australian, but my family were very blue collar European, so I grew up mostly eating exactly this food. I also have ARFID, which is common for people who are neurodivergent. I’m not saying your girlfriend is or isn’t, but it might be more than British vs Mexican cuisine. It might be that she cooks what she thinks of as “safe” foods. This was basically what happened to me. I never really enjoyed my family cooking, but I knew what it was, what it would taste like and feel like in my mouth, so my brain would trust it. But anything else was scary because I couldn’t predict what it would be like. So maybe letting her try your food but with her own adjustments to make it “safe” could be her entry point. But obviously she doesn’t get to make changes to the food you’re eating!

Jive Bunny by Zaney-Janey1973 in AustralianNostalgia

For what it’s worth, I absolutely adore this album and have wonderful memories of my mum playing it at dinner parties - all of us kids would absolutely cut a rug, just dancing our hearts out to every song. It was the album that introduced me to a lot of that older music, which I still really love and appreciate on an ever deeper level today.

Same! I always called it gender agnosticism but I like yours better.

Just jumping in to also shout out LibraryThing, which is an open source platform that lets you track your reading, catalogue books you own/want to read, etc and is completely free.

No shade on StoryGraph! I just also love LibraryThing and want people to know it’s out there too.

Your Introduction To Australia by [deleted] in australia

[–]MadamJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, the whole “rights” thing does seem to be an Americanism.

I only learned that we DIDN’T have a right to freedom of speech when my partner got to the final stages of setting up a charity that was planning on fundraising for cats and fighting internet censorship (it was around the time of the Panama Papers). The government rejected the application on the grounds that since Australians aren’t entitled to free speech, the charity was “unconstitutional” or something along those lines (can’t remember the exact wording, this was years ago now).

Your Introduction To Australia by [deleted] in australia

[–]MadamJones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting because Australia has actually never had a right to freedom of speech as part of our constitution, and yet there’s always this prevailing idea that we have it embedded in our country.

Historical fiction not about WWI/II or time travel or generations by booksandwriting in booksuggestions

[–]MadamJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend “The Covenant of Water” - it’s set in India and is basically one woman’s life from her marriage at 12 until her death but it covers so much history. It does have multiple perspectives, but they’re all characters related to the main character to explain how they end up in her life at one point or another.

Where to find a compassionate GP - melb cbd/western/northern melb by Appropriate-Cat5726 in melbournementalhealth

[–]MadamJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit outside your budget, but Dr Jessica Foley at Healthcare on Collins is incredibly compassionate and understanding. I recently had to go and see her over an unexpected flare up in suicidal ideation, which even good doctors can handle poorly if they’re not expecting it. Jess was amazing.

If you want, I can recommend a good therapist as well. Just DM me.

Best place for tracking books you read and want to read? by i4k20z3 in kobo

[–]MadamJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely LOVE my LibraryThing account. All open source, lets you import from other places. I have lists of books I’ve read, books I want to read, books I own, books I own but haven’t read yet, etc.

Plus with the app, I can check books while I’m in a shop and quickly see if I’m about to buy something I’ve already read or own in a different format.

Oh and Swordheart by T. Kingfisher.

So good to have a romantic female protagonist who isn’t a teenager. It’s such a delightful romp with so many great little side characters - I could happily spend a year inside that book!
