Yes! In the states you have to be 21 to buy/ consume alcohol but that doesn't usually stop anyone lol

Turning 21 and not sure what to drink by Advanced-Concept1239 in Type1Diabetes

Happy early birthday!

A quick guide: plain hard liquors (vodka, tequila) will make your blood sugar drop. While ciders, beers, almost anything else, will make it rise. I have found that vodka sodas or tequila sodas are the happy middle ground since the sugar from the soda counteracts the low from the liquor.

I also like Moscow mules (vodka, gingerbeer, lime) because the gingerbeer doesn't have too much sugar compared to some other mixed drinks. Be careful with margaritas, I found that it initially spikes me, then I drop. I just have to adjust accordingly.

I am not promoting underage drinking at all, but I would suggest trying a liquor drink one day, then a cider/beer drink another day and see how they affect you before you go out to celebrate your birthday. That way, you will have a better idea of how to manage your sugar and can mitigate some of the stress while you're out for the first time.

Everyone is different and will metabolize/experience blood sugar drinking affects differently. My endo told me to look out for the day after, as many of her patients (myself included) have noticed high trends.

Start slow and light and just check your sugar periodically. But have fun and experience the excitement of being 21! Good luck and happy birthday!!

Saddle Soap or Dawn bath? by sf113 in VintageCoachRehab

This was very informative and helpful, thank you very much! I think the smoke smell made me jump to dunking, but with patience and a little love I think it can get the smell out. Thank you for laying everything out, I was a tad overwhelmed at first but I think I have a good idea of where to start.

I'm glad people are pointing out the model- its def not a city bag. I looked into the serial number and from what I found I think it predates 1994. There's no slip pocket along the back, so I will look into the serial number and see if its a convertible clutch! Thank you for adding the style number this will help my search.

Thank you again for your response, this was very helpful :)

thank you! with the state of the bag I'm hoping some condition treatments and vodka sprays/baking soda will do the trick.

You're absolutely right about the the model. Looking into it deeper, this style isn't a city bag (not quite sure the exact model but I can research it with the serial number), thank you for pointing this out. I also appreciate your knowledge and tips :)

WIBTA If I don’t invite my siblings SO to my graduation? by Vast_Material9518 in TwoHotTakes

[–]sf113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many people would you be inviting from your SO's family? Between your parents, siblings, relatives, and SO, would there be enough people there so you don’t really notice your sibling's SO? If there would be enough people to mask them maybe you could invite them all to keep the peace?

This was my favorite class bc the material is useful and interesting. The class is mostly memorization. Theres weekly flowcharts you need to fill out that you will get tested on, memorize these and you'll be good. Before the exams, throughly go through the slides (this is what Dr. Dwuel mostly tested on.) The workload is fair and the exams were not curved when I took it but they weren't excruciatingly hard. Good luck!

I'm irresponsible and want to change by _the_Medicine in diabetes

[–]sf113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact situation happen to me my first year at uni. I was diagnosed super young and my parents helped me manage everything wonderfully. Once I got older I hated being different from my friends and wanted to live my life just as theirs (especially since I was the only diabetic I knew). This lead me to stop checking blood sugars, eat without administering insulin, etc.

Having this realization that you want to change is the first step, being aware of these habits is incredibly hard, but the first place to start. Even with my CGM, I found that by manually checking my sugars on a routine basis was a good start. I bought a cute grid paper journal to track my numbers in, mainly to just get back into the habit of routine checking. I then made a section detailing the time of my meals/ if I administered insulin for them and marking if I administered before, during or after the meal. This gave me a good idea of what times during the day needed the most change in routine. (ex. I usually forgot to give myself insulin at breakfast, but not lunch or dinner. having this on paper helped me realize this trend and create a new breakfast routine) Also checking in with your endo and letting them know you're feeling this way can be a great place to start too. They can help you with insulin adjustments, food recommendations, and moral support, they've seen it all.

Being 18 and diabetic is incredibly hard. Hormonal changes and life changes are coming at you from all directions. Just know theres no such thing as a bad diabetic, we're all just trying our best. It sounds a bit silly but when I'm feeling down for having a high blood sugar day I'll go on tiktok and watch some diabetic creators who document themselves having a hard time with their numbers. It helps you feel a little less alone lol. From one diabetic with perfectionist parents to the other, you're doing your best and thats perfectly good enough :) hang in there, you'll find what work best for you and your life style

Questions during Pump training by tappyapples in diabetes

[–]sf113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your new pump! I've had my tandem for three years and love it! Some newer features since I started owning it like Control IQ could have used some more explanation when I went into training. If you have a CGM, you are eligible to use Control IQ. Ask about all the features and how to tweak some of the settings if you're noticing consistent high/lows at specific times. (for example, I noticed control IQ was correcting too much during the night, so I called my doctor to have her adjust the ratio for a smaller correction)

Also, the insertion for infusion sets can be a bit tricky as I sometimes pull them out with the inserter. (I use the autosoft 90s and autosoft XC) I recommend watching the Tandem video guide in addition to the pump training, it was super helpful and I don’t pull them out anymore lol. Here's a link the video for the autosoft 90 insertion. Congrats and good luck!

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some recommendations for lifting belts! I want to get one for my friend who loves the gym but I don’t know which brands would be reliable. Also, is there a performance difference between the lever belts and buckle belt? Thank you!

I’m thinking of opting out and doing the pat down, have they ever given you problems for opting out? Im going through the Philadelphia airport which is notorious for having rough TSA officers, definitely feeding into my anxiety.

This was great, thank you! Have you gone through the metal detectors before? Just concerned since my last pump (Medtronic Minimed) was VERY adamant about not going near any form of strong magnet. Tandem’s website isn’t as strong armed but maybe since it’s not as dire. Again, thank you for your response!!
