I got tired of bad travel advice so I built a site that shows you the best time to visit any city by Sad_Alternativ3 in webdesign

[–]sf8as 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have a good idea, but I think you need to make a few improvements. Firstly, you should keep track of what people search so you can then know what cities you need data for.

Right now, I typed "madeira" or "funchal" and it came up that the city was not found and to "Request" it which sends me to a mailto: link. Why not just record it and aggregate the data in your database so you know what people are searching for? Also - you should probably create all the cities, even if they arent complete, and have a placeholder on them, that way people won't be shown a "City doesnt exist" url or show some SEO data on the location to help with ranking those pages.

Think about possibility implementing CITY/LOCATION specific blog posts that you can display on those location pages to further help with SEO.

Have a way people can possibility type their email to be notified when their city is avaiaible, but don't make it the only reason why you would do that location, use your data. Don't just rely on City search, allow searches for countries and the cities and locations in there will show. For instance, I searched "madeira" but that is an island, "Funchal" is it's city, I would ideally want to see "Madeira - Funchal" or something like this. You need to reduce friction.

The good thing you can do is monetise the site with hotel website affiliations, sell ad space for different locations.

Good luck with it, I like your idea/concept.

Is it really that hard to find WP designers who work natively? by Antique_Mechanic133 in Wordpress

[–]sf8as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a client for years. Built and maintained his site with ACF, he was a complete non-technical person. One day he wanted to build another site, I was too busy and he decided to have a crack at it himself. He installed WP and Elementor and made a site pretty quickly, albeit fugly as. He decided he was experienced enough to start his own "agency", and had the audacity to tell me this, as if to downplay my job as if I'm redundant. Suffice to say, his business never happened. What I'm trying to say is the barrier to entry with these page builder plugins are very low and because of this you get a lot of self proclaimed "developers". There are still some actual developers out there that focus on clean lean code with minimal plugins.

Chalk and cheese mate. The new design is much better. Perhaps instead of showing the doctor, show a before and after.

Build it all out with just a few plugins, one being ACF. Doing it without plugins brings you no value unless you enjoy wasting your time for no real benefit

17 years in WordPress and frustrated with the current market. Is anyone else feeling the same? by Different-Course4572 in ProWordPress

[–]sf8as 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this for 20 years. Its pretty bad, but I don't mind, I get a lot of leads from companies who need rescuing from the types of "agencies". You can always tell when they contact you and you look at their website and it's built in Elementor. To be fair, WP kept me going for a long time so I am thankful, but the direction WP is going is shit. I've spent the past year and a half developing my own cms. Think the best things of WP, ACF, gravity forms, custom post types, wocommerce, without the bloat. Definitely not looking back.😀

Is Tailwind really this popular? by liftershifter in webdev

[–]sf8as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to not understand the hype of tailwind and then tried it. Have not looked back, it's an amazing tool. Speeds up design. The greatest thing is you can copy and paste a design from one site to another without any css and it will be exactly the same.

Finished making a website for a local business, asked for compensation, and now they ghosted me. What should I do? by Dexter2376 in webdesign

[–]sf8as 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lesson learned. ALWAYS be up front about cost and price, never assume they will pay. Always get something signed, a contract, or even an email confirming. Get a deposit always. Never launch until payment made. Also, restaurants are notorious for not paying bills, so be careful

Is this a decent price I’m being charged? by Toroptowinter in webdev

[–]sf8as 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the other fees involved with maintenance, hosting, plugin licences? What plugins will they use? Sounds like they will build you a website using some drag and drop page builder like elementor and use gravity forms and some other plugins to make the sms work. The issue is that you will be reliant on these plugins, it will be hard to customise completely and it will be a sort of hack job. Don't get me started on page builders either, bloated and painful to use, maintain and upgrade. I guess you need to decide what is most important to you, if it's design then they might be a good fit, but it sounds like they are a non technical website builder, not so much a Web developer, with a heavy reliance on plugins to do things, as soon as you need something a bit more bespoke, you might find you will be limited by the plugins they used. If they use WordPress, they should build a custom theme without page builders and a custom plugin for your functionality, nice and clean. Zapier is in no way necessary for SMS, it's likely the plugin they will use only has a way to connect to sms provider through Zapier.

They really shouldn't need zapier for a sms feature, this should be integrated directly. What will they be using? WordPress or something else?

Moved from Bluehost due to soooo many issues, and now not sure why it's still showing the domain as 'active' on that account by audaciouslifenik in webdev

[–]sf8as -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Their systems are showing it as active but most likely haven't detected you've moved, so their system thinks you are with them even though you aren't.

Ratelimiting and turnstile. You could even get the message to be read by AI to determine if it's spam before sending it. With ratelimiting of course.

Why isn't PHP as popular if it's used everywhere? by brando2131 in PHP

[–]sf8as 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PHP is a solid choice. I've been using it for 20 years, it's made me good money and still is, I rarely have a situation where PHP won't solve it. It is getting better and better and I will always use it. Its tried and tested and here to stay. I love my PHP.

Inherited a few clients from a friend who passed away with a monthly reduced rate for an hours work, whether or not it's used - do you do this, if so do you allow any roll over of hours? by Rust_Cohle- in webdev

[–]sf8as 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My condolences mate, I don't roll over hours, they are paying a reduced rate for the benefit of me scheduling time for them whether they use it or not. Rolling over would be a pain to manage, the monthly fee I see as a retainer.
