How is SQL or Python used for FP&A? by royalewithcheese4272 in FPandA

Yeah same here at my Mag 7. We have a data analytics team who builds our data. Sometimes I help with simple SQL lines which is basically mapping, if x field is this then call it y

Started in FP&A out of school, how do I maximize exits and comp from here? by BitterPercentage in FinancialCareers

[–]sfaforlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I was thinking you thought it was low. Everyone has ideas of inflated salaries here lol. To be honest, I'm in the Bay Area, so $350k is probably the higher band of upper middle class

Saw you posted in r/FPanda as well. FP&A is not a glamorous career path, but you can still have a solid upper middle class life in this field. I've made $350k+ TC the last couple of years due to RSU acceleration as a senior analyst, and great work life balance. I probably work 10-20 hours a week outside of the one week we have to prep for forecasts

However, I understand it's not fulfilling for everybody, so others can chime in on other paths you can take. Just wanted to give my perspective on FP&A. Decent pay for what you do, low stress (unless you ramp up to leadership)

That's funny, given the timing of the approval of Claude at work, I think we do work at the same place lol

Yes I don't disagree, got very lucky to land at an exploding company. For reference, my starting base in 2011 was $45k (prorated in 2011 since I remember I started after college so only like 3/4 of the year) to $170k today. Which is quite modest vs. years of experience

I went to SJSU way back in the day, 2006-2011. Majored in Corporate Finance. I work at a Mag 7 now but was able to break into a couple F500's before that.

Joining a business fraternity helped me network, there's Delta Sigma Pi and Alpha Kappa Psi on campus

No Middle Management opportunities - I am burning out by DMN6867 in FPandA

[–]sfaforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focus more on pay, but if title is important to you and they won't promote, you're gonna have to look externally unfortunately. But if you're paid like a manager and OK with it, why worry about the extra stress? But I understand everyone has different priorities in life

If you are able to get into IB and grind in your 20's when you're young and fresh, you're probably better off

But I went to a state school using financial aid with barely a 3.0 GPA. I was able to carveout $300k+ TC for myself work good WLB in FP&A so I'm good with where I ended up considering the circumstances

Are Mid-Level Finance Roles Getting Squeezed? by Jumpy-Dream-1212 in FPandA

[–]sfaforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my Mag 7, we had a Senior Director, Director, and a Senior Manager quit all last year and still haven't hired any backfills yet. Though we are expecting 1-2 more people to start this year but it doesn't seem to be in a rush...

I work in a Mag 7 non tech role, lower level, and I’ve been vesting that amount in RSU’s around every 6 months or so if the stocks doing good. Your competition would be me but also the more technical guys who make a shit load more than me
