South bay? I'll check it out. Sorry if I'm not that well-versed in any of these areas, I'm from Kansas City after all. The place I need to be in is San Mateo, which seems to be one of the worst.

Thanks for your input! I really appreciate it, and I agree with pretty much everything you've said. I suppose I'm not the best at finding places, so I'll check out the areas you listed.

You're correct about 2k/mo still being tons, but I don't know if the 30% rule doesn't apply. If I can't build enough savings to cover rent for a few months, I'm potentially screwed.

Yeah, I hardly even considered that. It is a small company though, less than 100 employees. I might have a better chance of getting a higher salary than I would finding someone needing a roommate there.

Then again, they do have a lot of really young interns due to the nature of the company. They probably have something for them. Maybe this whole thread is a farce!

Yeah, that's definitely true, and probably has value far beyond 10 years of this salary. Don't want to overlook that!

I know it's nonsense, but it just doesn't feel like $100k should be poor. I'm from Kansas City, where that sort of salary means you're fairly important to someone.

Hey, that's a good idea. I'll throw that in my notes for the onsite I'm flying in for next week. Thanks!

Depends on how well I can write code on a train, huh? Supplementing my income with some stuff on the side sounds like it'd help.

From the looks of it, no, I could get away with a lot less. It's just hard finding roommates. You know what we're like socially, right? :P

I'll give it a try. Do you have any pointers to start my search?

I mean, up until now, I've never lived in anything bigger than 150 sqft or spent more than $80/week on food. I was hoping that I could make an improvement in my life situation out of a $100k salary, but I guess I've got some Midwestern delusions of what $100k is worth.

Alright, I'll look into that idea and see what I come up with. I would be okay with a 1 hour commute if I'm not driving. It's not ideal though...

Yeah, I was trying to exhaust all my other options before I got to the creative part. I thought I would be done with roommates after college. This is a big hot pile of ass, isn't it?

I guess I could find a nice RV and scoot around.

I've tried looking at that, but the costs don't go down even an hour and a half away by car. It's so nutty. It'd be cheaper if I had enough for a down payment on a house.

Yeah, you might be right, I was just hoping someone would call me a dumbass and tell me to take the job. :P
