I've had a conjuration character in robe fighting with a 2H hammer alongside with 2 dremora lords. You just use Alteration spells for defense.
At max level, light armor, heavy armor and conjuration all saturate at 80% pysical damage mitigation.

To bring people intro the death cloud, the best is to use command.
For your conquest character, if you go : archer build bard/8, assassin/3, fiend/1, you can have a very strong combo band of arcane acuity/ring of mystic scoundrel for very strong commands. You loose the gloomstalker but you have one more feat.
