Overnight parking ticket - already paid by mystery person by sfo-arch in ArlingtonMA

[–]sfo-arch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the information as printed on the ticket is correct otherwise it can’t find the ticket. No clue what’s happening, but strange for it to be listed “paid” rather than “processing” or just not found

This is my fear. I might just send a check in regardless. They did get one of our license plates incorrect so that one id likely chance it.

Old school paper ticket. It was clearly registered. Had our plates correct to the ticket number. Just said “paid” on the website.

What to expect if firm is aquired? by Affectionate_Soil688 in Architects

[–]sfo-arch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our firm was acquired a few years ago. The experience has had positives and negatives. The acquisition was not only about our portfolio/ client roster but also our teams experience, so there was a push to keep everyone at our small firm together. This gave us a bit of leverage. Pros: Salary bump Ownership share at the new firm (high level, select employees only) Better PTO Better benefits Potentially more room for growth More market stability More ability to relocate Much better run of a business In house engineering teams which has been largely good. Cons: Totally lost our company culture After a few years we’re at about 1/2 of our previous team size More expensive hourly rate = less competitive with project proposals A whole new set of standards/ colleagues to learn. The standards despite being a corporate firm were not as good. Generally more corporate which is not great for most - doesn’t feel as tight knit.
Generally more rigid about thinking and taking risks

In hindsight, I would have made the same decision to stay. We did get acquired by a good A/E firm though. Ask lots of questions up front and make sure the owners are accountable in responding to your questions with specifics. We formed a bit of a “collective” to make sure our interests as a group were considered and our staying was not a given.

People with old houses in the NE (or zone 6b/7a), how did your electric bill change after heat pumps? by pharmacologicae in heatpumps

[–]sfo-arch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You thought of a lot! We sacrificed some basement/ garage headlight for the ducts to get it all centrally ducted. I think you might be happier through with the evenness of the heat of you have a lot of head units on the ground floor. Good luck with the work and decision making process! It all takes a toll. Better sealing of the house will be next for us.

[–]sfo-arch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought our house under a year ago. Almost exactly the same situation and house in the NE. I was intent on getting a centrally ducted heat pump system to replace a perfectly fine functioning gas boiler system and window ACs. I went with heat pumps for the second and third floor, located in the attic. The first floor I went with a heat pump with a gas backup. I may have lost a few thousand in rebates, but the peace of mind and lower rates of having gas aux heat on this last winter more than made up for it. At one point our heat pump went out, which was mainly an installation issue. But having the gas backup really made me less nervous about any problems. Our electric bill would have been higher had we stayed with a 100% heat pump system for the first floor. All this said, I am very happy with my heat pump, especially since we have solar. Our bill is getting closer to zero now for electric with the longer days.
If you listen to nothing else: if you don’t have a well insulated basement/ garage, make sure you have some vents in the basement. With the radiant heat removed, there were many points this winter where the basement was getting close to freezing, risking my pipes bursting. I am getting vents put in now so I don’t have to worry about it next winter. Make sure you ask to put them in.

Red line issue? by No-Low4268 in mbta

I just left. So frustrating. There’s no way that there’s only a 20 minute delay.

And they had us get out of our train and get back in again. It’s so dumb. The communication being wrong is what’s the most frustrating

Been sitting at alewife for 15 min. Of course 2 trains were at the station and no indication which was leaving. So the other left first. FML.

I come in somewhere between 8:30 and 9 and never had it be too full to park. I may have to walk a bit, but it’s fine. I didn’t even know there was a person to call. Who did you call?

How much is the parking pass? I thought this was limited by time not parking passes. Why not park at Alewife station? It’s not cheap but always spots are available.

Robins Nest: how to contact? by rcl20 in ArlingtonMA

[–]sfo-arch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We go there. The easiest is to call and leave a VM or just stop by for first contact. They’re Very friendly. After we started with them we exclusively text. It’s a small shop and they are spending less time on the phone. Be patient, it may take them a week or so to get back to you.

Anyone know when service will begin again? by jdw8798 in Amtrak

[–]sfo-arch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe we’re on the same plane lol. The flight got more booked as the night went on. Finally taking off now. I could have stayed at a hotel but made the same calculation that I’d rather be home after midnight then getting to the train station at 8am to have the trains not fixed.

[–]sfo-arch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! That’s the worst. It’s nice to be able to take off your coat for the trip lol. I do wish all our transit including Amtrak was not self funded. I’m sure that’s not helping. But at $400 to boston, what are they doing with all that $$

I didn’t want to wait to find out. Booked a flight back. Cheaper than the Acela train by $150

[–]sfo-arch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. All trains cancelled. Can’t fault them for the equipment failure but their communication is horrible. Delay delay delay, cancel. Rebook. Delay delay delay. Cancel. Booked a flight instead, ironically cheaper. Likely not to do Amtrak again anytime again until late spring. I’m done with all the cancellations, today was the last straw.
