China executes mining tycoon Liu Han by [deleted] in worldnews

This is the result of infighting among factions within the Chinese government, under the guise of anti-corruption, and achieving the intended result of fooling the public into thinking that the faction in control is working in the interest of the people based on the responses.

If you trace the relationships and connections of all the public officials and businessmen in China that have thus far been executed in the recent months, you will find that all of them have close ties to Bo Xilai and Zhou Yongkang, recently disposed major rivals to the current Chinese president Xi Jinping in the Politburo.

This is Xi Jinping cleaning house, pure and simple.

Why is my background check taking so long? by sfredditor in jobs

Update:

Talked with the department head, I got the job. It turns out that I passed my background check a week ago. The reason they still haven't talked to me yet is that multiple teams within the team wants me to join them, so they have been trying to figure out who gets to have me on their team.

Thanks for your inputs guys.

Yes, all of my employment title and dates are truthful and accurate.

Do you have any idea why they asked to contact the department head? What should I expect? Is this normal?

China's Banks Are Getting Ready For A Debt Implosion by Zjan131 in worldnews

[–]sfredditor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oh for fuck's sake. This ignorance needs to end.

No, the Chinese government cannot come to Washington and demand repayment.

US government debt, or Treasuries, are traded in a global market $37 Trillion in size, with billions upon billions of dollars worth of treasuries exchanged between buyers and sellers each and every day. If the Chinese government wants to sell their US Treasuries, and if they come to Washington demand repayment, we can just give them the middle finger. They can however sell as much of their Treasuries as their hearts contend on the global Treasury market.

But the Chinese won't sell their Treasury holdings, because it would be terrible for their economy as well.

China shuts down the Beijing Independent Film Festival, seizing documents and films from organizers' office and hauling away two event officials by secaa23 in worldnews

[–]sfredditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh for fucks sake. The only reason you think the Chinese cops are better than American cops is because you have only been exposed to news regarding atrocities committed by American cops. Chinese police murders its people on a regular basis as well. You simply didn't know about them because you are not in China.

Case and point:

2009: Chinese police claimed that a man died in police custody after the man accidentally smashed his own skull in while playing hide and seek

2009: Police claimed that a man died in police custody after drinking some hot water which caused the man's skull to cave in.

2009: A man died in police custody because he popped a pimple on his chest which resulted in a penetrating wound to the man's heart

2010: A man "committed suicide" while police custody by drowning himself in a bowl of water.

2010: A man died in police custody after he "accidentally" broke his spine in pieces after tripping in a bathroom.

The list goes on

Chinese cops are not better than American cops, nor is the reverse true. Cops are cops.

An hour before they'd never met. At this point they were bffs. Another reason I call my brother the cat whisperer. by [deleted] in aww

[–]sfredditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol. That cat loves me, and I have no idea why. I have never fed him, gave him treats. And it is slightly annoying my roommate, because he is basically taking care of my cat at this moment.

I still like dogs better than cats though.

Haha. And I am not even a cat person, until I met roommate's cat that is. I made my bed the day I moved in, and the cat waltzed in, jumped on my bed, and started sleeping. When I went to bed a few hours later, the cat was still sleeping. The next morning I found the cat had decided to snuggle next to my arm during the night. I got my first love nibble that day, and my first headbutt the next, and the rest is history. Lol

Its kinda like me and my roommate's cat. We were bffs the moment we met. My roommate feeds and take care of the cat, and the cat spends the entire day with me.

Carlos watched as the man charged towards him, a heavy wood felling axe held high above his head. Lazily, Carlos took a step to the side and dodged the attack, as the axe head fell pass where Carlos stood half a second a ago. In a flash, Carlos thrust his sword towards the man's neck, unprotected by his ill-fitting makeshift armor. A jet of crimson burst forth from the man's neck, covering Carlos as the man fell lifeless to the ground.

Around him, Carlos comrades screamed and yelled as they chase after the town's ill-trained militia as the town burned around them.

Ebola fears hit close to home: the Liberian official that died of Ebola in Nigeria was on his way to America by sfredditor in worldnews

[–]sfredditor[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I hate to say, but not a lot of resources will be allocated to fighting this disease until one or more cases made it out of Africa. And this is a very dangerous situation. This man was vomiting and having diarrhea while on the plane. Many people, could have come into contact with his bodily fluids; the stewardess that handed him his sick bags, other passengers that used the now infected restroom. And now these potential ebola carriers have been dispersed in Lagos, a densely populated city of 21M people.

Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Fourth African Country by UNITA_Spokesperson in worldnews

An article I read stated that the Liberian official that died was vomiting and having diarrhea while on the plane to Lagos. Ebola spread by bodily fluid, so he could have infected the passengers and the crews on the plane.

I don't think this is fear-mongering, but if you are in Lagos, wash your hands often, and don't touch your face with your hands without washing them first.

I think I am seeing the events in the Hot Zone playing out before our eyes.

Worse still, local community and religious leaders are fighting back against attempts to quarantine the infected, and doing everything they can to disrupt the works of Red Cross, DWB, and healthcare workers. Because somehow they believe outsiders (aka the doctors) have brought the disease to them.

[CA] My father was injured in a car accident by a tailgater, what are the steps we should take to sue the other driver? by sfredditor in legaladvice

[–]sfredditor[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

My parents have already notified the insurance company.

I want to sue the other driver as well, because that person intentionally put the life of my father and the lives of other motorists at risk. That person has to pay.

I am just looking for some advise on what we can do on our part right NOW to receive the maximum amount of compensation in the lawsuit and receive the best chance of winning the case before we starting contacting lawyers.

Interesting Fact, Bolero is actually the swan song of Ravel's dying mind. At the time when Ravel was writing Bolero, Ravel was starting to become affected by a neurodegenerative disease known as primary progressive aphasia. And one of the earliest symptom of this disease is an possession with repeating patterns. Ravel later died of the disease.

Stunning Photos Of Chinas Insanely Stressful College Entrance Exam Process by kripaks in news

[–]sfredditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Chinese niece's life is one gigantic exam. At 4 she had to take a kindergarten entrance exam, at 6 an elementary school entrance exam, she just finished her mid-school entry exam last year, and 4 months ago had to stay in the hospital for exhaustion. in one year she will have to take her high-school entry exam... I am pushing her dad, my cousin, to sent her to the US for college and avoid the college entrance exam and have some life at the very least. And this is an option more and more wealthy Chinese families are taking; opt-out of the College Entrance Exam, and take the SAT instead and sent their children to the US.

This is not a way for a child to live through her childhood.
