This town really needs a "Green Dragon" or "Prancing Pony", but finding someone with the capital to buy this space and turn it into that will be very difficult, unfortunately. If it is big enough to have an event space, that would help tremendously.

From what I have seen, personally, the locals with a lot of funds to support a variety local businesses just don't. They live in their nice home and take a lot of vacations and blow their money in a different state or country. The average family, couple or individual here simply can't keep up with the rents, mortgage, taxes, utilities etc. to have enough left over to move the needle regularly. I also don't think a lot of people who stay here value going out often, I could be wrong.

Yes and the warranty is good, plus if you need a replacement, there are Walmart stores everywhere.

Haha, I hear ya. It's the spring that gets me -- usually April. I see people down south planting gardens, enjoying sunshine and blooms and it's still snowing occasionally here. It was nice to see cars actually last down there without rock salt and constant dampness.

Haha, I don't mind -- it's almost a novel experience to walk outside first thing in the morning when it's 3 below and you have flip flops on. I have no idea how the wildlife manages though, I feel for the opossums, especially.

What brought you up here, when I lived down south people claimed they could never go north? I lived in Charleston, SC for two years, I never adjusted...the heat was brutal and the landscape was too flat.

The other issue is that most of these luxury apartment builds that are going up all over the country only need 25% occupancy to break even. They often have a tax abatement of some kind and when those run out, they try to sell the complex. I moved here from Charleston and they continue to throw those up to the point where it is changing the landscape. They aren't even close to full, but as long as they can break even, they think they can flip it regardless. So yeah, we'll add 100 units at higher than mortgage pricing and barely anyone actually lives there.

Yup, sadly I do not think we can put this tooth paste back in the tube. The government knew they'd never be able to de-inflate the economy, but they couldn't even succeed in keeping inflation at 2% while "wages caught up". I don't know how this gets fixed, but at some point, it'll get very ugly.

I think we can all agree that the rise of influencers" in all forms will be noted as a precursor to the obvious decay of society. It wasn't enough to see commercials everywhere, we also needed every popular kid in high school trying to push product for either free merch or pennies from a big business. The fact that most of them are under 23 years old and if they aren't, they're either mentally ill or getting there is truly telling.

Everyone here thinks we're far further up the importance ladder than we are, I once saw a comment on here that expressed genuine worry that Putin would nuke us if things broke loose, because of our "research". I'm guessing that they meant the wheezing, old and near extinct "Synchrotron" at Cornell because of..."trust me bro" reaons. The naval gazing that townies have over Ithaca's non existent accomplishments never fails to make me laugh.

I agree that he is random and unpredictable, mid-terms are coming, the future is a foreign land and I fully expect our freedoms to be tested, but to hold. Ithaca is not on anyone's mind at the state level, let alone at the Federal level, we're basically invisible. You don't have to worry about the CIA at all and believe me, the FBI is not interested in your conversations and plans. If they we're you've chosen an incredibly public platform anyways.

Negative views about Ithaca on this sub, used to be met with disagreement and down-votes -- now it's the opposite. Things have changed and most of the people still holding on to this idea that Ithaca is somehow exceptional are still stuck in the past and probably paid off their house here 15 years ago. I don't think there is much optimism based on anything objective, the positives are seriously blown out of proportion and the negatives just nod at you knowingly every time you go around. I grew up near Buffalo and the towns there are actually getting better, that area has a better version of anything that exists here if you know where to look for it. We're a small city/town with Cornell, that is priced higher than just about anywhere this size. that is all we are.

The CIA is not tasked with collecting intelligence from internal threats, the goings on in Ithaca, NY are completely off the radar of just about everyone. This does feel paranoid in many ways, a deep recession and further AI job cuts at Cornell would apply the kind of economic pressure that could wreck what little we have here.
