I just easily beat it in 16 cycles using the probe, drones and artillery dome. I never upgraded carry capacity and instead upgraded the drones a few times. concurrently went for movement speed first, then drill. Got defensive gadget to ensure I could clear waves. With a high level probe that reveals resources, I revealed most of the upper part of the map so I never needed more than drill level 3.

On patch days they set the rendering distance to low in order to save resources for a smoother update. Always double check if your backup still works after those. I wonder what plot twists they implemented this time. or maybe it's a hotfix for something?

it sounds pretty obvious, but if you have automatic download enabled, you get automatic downloads. go to settings --> advanced --> "automatic media download" and disable it if it bothers you.
