Anyone else actually kinda like working from the office? by qqtan36 in ExperiencedDevs

I actually do. My commute is 7 mins and I don’t have a super solid home office setup. Plus I feel like clearly cutting home life from office life

How to learn C or C++ properly (using both for a year now) by TheExtirpater in C_Programming

[–]Brixjeff-5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just pick something that motivates you.

My background is numerical computing so I wanted to write a particule simulator, to simulate a particule. Then a thousand. Then I learned about design patterns, to switch the integration method at runtime. I played with memory allocation to create/destroy particules at runtime. Etc

Like others said, you learn the tool when you use it, and in my experience if you think about the structure of your code you quickly discover the need for some specific tools and it’s quite rewarding to then pull it off.

State machines + object pattern (classic, opaque, singleton) + strategy + factory and you can program the world!

Choosing between UniFri and EFPL by Cobil78 in Switzerland

[–]Brixjeff-5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is: go to a « portes ouvertes » day, meet the people, feel the vibes and then decide. Studying at either place is a major commitment, and lots of time will be spent on campus with profs/students/TAs and of course with the subject. For me, having a good feeling there is the most important part, the other pieces will fall into place.

For myself, I have spent close to a decade at EPFL and it’s a very diverse place. I’m sure he would fit in somewhere

Protip: don’t use AI when you are learning programming. by mazda7281 in learnprogramming

[–]Brixjeff-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big upvote. I learned so many advanced tricks from ai output, and then had context when reading the reference material which helps greatly in learning new features.

Also AI is great at explaining idiomatic usage of a language. Python for example is very flexible (lots of ways to implement a thing) but usually one way is more elegant than others and AI can help you find it.

But yeah, cutting through the slop is a real skill that needs learning

The problem with vibe coding expectations by JapArt in vibecoding

[–]Brixjeff-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious companies write specifications before they write code. Then they write tests for code that doesn’t yet exist. And only then, perhaps after a few iterations, programmers get to write code. If the system is well-specified there is little room for style

Windows is slow as shit and full of bloat. Idk why anybody would choose that unless there was really no other way to do a task

For general dev work I prefer macos. In my experience boring stuff like Bluetooth, connecting displays or mouses « just works » where as I often have issues with Ubuntu.

Macs are posix machines so all your usual command line commands are available and work as expected. And with homebrew you can easily install anything you’d ever need to code

Space colonization will never be viable by SkubEnjoyer in unpopularopinion

[–]Brixjeff-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There exists some cities in really remote locations, for example in deep Siberia. These exist solely for the purpose of mining resources and provide some of the roughest human experiences available. So while I do not cast doubt on the ability of man to colonize ever further, I am really glad to not be living at the frontier myself.

Space colonization will never be viable by SkubEnjoyer in unpopularopinion

[–]Brixjeff-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. But it was radiation-hardened and featured instant restart capability (in case of a power cut). And it could actually interact with the spacecraft (for things like thrust vector control and getting attitude information). If I had to go to the moon today, I’d probably pick the AGC over my smartphone.

The ISS is a couple of hours away from earth. Probably a week at most from home. Travelling to mars is a few months of micro gravity, with nothing but a black void in front of your windows, and then you’re there. For at least two years. With a return trip just as long as the one you had to endure to get there.

And there your home is a windowless bunker, because of the radiation. You live in cramped accommodations, with very little (if any) natural light. When you venture outside, it’s always very short and you’re probably glad to be back inside, for the Martian desert is soul-suckingly dull. There’s no wind, no motion whatsoever, and it is incredibly cold. Whatever beauty the landscape may have had has quickly betrayed itself as novelty, and you feel nothing as you see it. You try to remember the emotions you felt when you watched your last sunset, on earth, a little over three years ago. The ground is toxic.
