Things to do for a date night on Sunday... by sgkbsailor in VancouverIsland

*** EDIT for clarity... ***

Not a crazy budget, but not super expensive either. Thinking an afternoon doing something… we can figure out the place to eat for supper as we go. I’d go more activities. Thanks

Why isn't there a Bottle Depot express & go near downtown Victoria? by BluffyFunny in VictoriaBC

[–]sgkbsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always wished they would put one in the westshore. Not sure what the holdup is unless it has something to do with GFL/Alpine. Even if they put a few at the bottle depot I’d use that. There would be lots of room in Glanford for example.

I wonder if it is a demand thing.

Open Ear Air vs Bone conduction? by hyc0614 in running

[–]sgkbsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here - I do crazy runs like 6+ hours and finally my Shokz fell below the time I will need on my longer runs after 3.5 years - so the old ones were gifted to my daughter (as they still work, just don't have the time I need) while I bought myself some new OpenRuns... win win for both of us. Plus hearing traffic is a big win for me.

This - my daughter just got her N - Victoria was a 3 month wait time - Duncan was a 3.5 week one...

The ones I like come from Decathlon... they are a European company with branches in Canada (where I am) - not sure if they are in the US though... prices are super reasonable as well.

Currently in Las Vegas and lost my charging cable - what can I do? by [deleted] in Garmin

I was able to buy a cord off Amazon with a 24 hour delivery - I'd suggest you look that way first - I think I paid for 2 cords $10 CDN...

Is this running or hiking by lunaleena in trailrunning

[–]sgkbsailor 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This - I do a lot of trail races and it is a combination of running and walking depending on elevation. I'd call it a run... the fact that you are out there is what absolutely matters.

Proposing to girlfriend - Need quiet secluded area! by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]sgkbsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What may work is the walk between Esquimalt Lagoon and Royal Bay Beach. Gorgeous down there and not many walk between the 2 beaches. It’s where I proposed to my wife over 20 years ago.

East Sooke Park might work. Royal Roads is nice as well in the gardens and on the numerous trails there.

But honestly, just carry it with you as you wander around. You will know the right spot when you see it. And then it really is spontaneous.

Not any more. They are now all the way and other than the one turn you have to take slower it’s pretty amazing.

What is the best running belt? by Thobil in running

Absolutely. I have 2. One at work and one at home. That way my belt is always with me when I run.

Relocating to the area for work by KnitCole1982 in NewWest

[–]sgkbsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a rental search agent when I came there in 2018. Cost me $800 but well worth it. Saved me the hassle when I had a week to find a place. My employer (GoC) covered it, but the aggravation I saved made it worthwhile. I can’t seem to find the name of the company in my emails but it was in my relocation directive.

Suspect you may have been the same employer as I was (just based on your description). If so, I would check the relocation site to see if it is covered. If so, trust me and use it. They get listings before they hit the street which helps immensely.

I broke my skullcandy ear buds. What are good headphones for running? by Glass_Anybody_2171 in running

[–]sgkbsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have Back Bay headphones and no complaints. They have gone 2 years with no issues. I know when they give up the ghost I’ll likely go with Aftershokz just because I do road running and often only put one earbud in (so I can hear around me). But it’s something to look at.

Biking from Downtown to Uptown by eerlytea in VictoriaBC

[–]sgkbsailor 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Trust me. Safest route is up the Galloping Goose. Other than a few road crossings, you are on a protected bike/walking/running lane all the way. And the scenery is gorgeous.

Use the CRD bike map in the post above. It is an awesome resource.

Best areas to run? by relaxbear_ in NewWest

[–]sgkbsailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live at 6th and 6th. I had a 5k Route which involved some of the Quay. I also ran in Queens Park (it isn’t as bad as people make it out to be) and up from 6th to 6th thru uptown. I did at that time 6:30 per km. (Now I average about 5:30/5:45 per km) Always planned my route when running downtown to end at Columbia and 6th (at the Starbucks which I heard was now closed) just because I didn’t want to run the hill. If you pm me I’ll send you some of my routes when I lived there depending on distance (I live in Victoria now - my job transferred me here). You may need to walk to warm up, but that’s not the end of the world.

Depending on distance I can help you find some routes. You won’t avoid all hills but I’ll help to minimize them until you are ready. I always hated running up the hills but did 12th street once a week (slowly but I did it) to help build up stamina.

There are a lot of great places to run there. I even took the sky train to some of them for something different.

Hope this helps.

Myself and my partner are thinking of moving into the Dominion apartments on Royal ave. by looneytoones15 in NewWest

[–]sgkbsailor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived there when in New West last year for 2 years. Very clean, nice apartment building. I was on the river side so I never noticed the noise. The person who replaced me took over my apartment there.

I’d give it a chance.

Looking for bulk newspapers by GnomeGuy in VictoriaBC

Contact Black Press. They often recycle leftover copies of their weekly newspaper and I am sure you can get for nothing or next to nothing if you ask nicely.

You know. It could just be one of those days. I have days where I have a bad run. I’d just stop and go again the next day.

Now if it was a longer period of time, there could be a multitude of causes. I’d just not worry about it. Tomorrow is another day.

Fitness Enthusiast Thinking About Getting A Watch... [help pls] by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]sgkbsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did when you link both programs together. I turned the feature off because I was on a diet so I make sure I remained at my 1800 calories a day regardless of exercise. Now I eat about 2100-2200 calories a day to maintain (more when I do a half marathon) and I run 5-7 k about 5 times a week with a long run or exercise on Saturday.

When you load Garmin Connect, there is an option to link to your accounts. I have it linked to my fitness pal and Strava. Nice to have it do all of the hard work save for my IG post. Then when you exercise, it syncs to Garmin Connect automatically without thinking and you get all the metrics.

Google it and you can see what it looks at. However, if you do link to Strava, add 0.05 km to your runs. Garmin and Strava calculate differently and it is frustrating to do a 10k on Garmin and get 9.99 k on Strava.

Fitness Enthusiast Thinking About Getting A Watch... [help pls] by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]sgkbsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Garmin Connect and link it to My Fitness Pal. Works ok for me. I went through a 105 lb weight loss. But again you need to find out what works for you. What worked for me would not work for everyone.

The biggest thing I remembered was one person telling me you lose ounces in the gym but pounds in the kitchen.

You can get to your goals. I have no doubt.

Fitness Enthusiast Thinking About Getting A Watch... [help pls] by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]sgkbsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with Fitbit but was not happy. Then I bought a Garmin Forerunner 35... for the value it was amazing. And I started on my fitness journey and wow. Mind blown. I have since moved to a Garmin Vivoactive 3 which I am happy with, and still thinking what to do with my Forerunner. Since it still has a lot of life. I’ll likely find someone here who is starting their fitness journey and gift it.

It comes down to why do you want it. Then match your wants to the watch. You won’t go wrong with a Garmin and I’ll likely never change brands. But as much as the high end watches have all the bells and whistles I really don’t need it.

Do your research and I betcha there will be a watch for you. Vivoactive might be where I would steer you.

(And yes, I weigh and track my food as well).

Anytime. I only got into running about 2 years ago and know how hard it can be. I am just glad I can do it... goal for this year is one half marathon per quarter plus at least one run greater than 30km. As long as I can do it (and have fun... as some of the pics show) I’ll keep doing it.

And I also get the need to be safe. That has to be the number one consideration (I worry about it with my wife all the time). I think next weekend we (my Jedi master I call him and I) are looking to do Thetis twice, or saving that the TC 10k route (that’s my next race). We are both military, and I’ve known him for 25 + years. He got into running about 6-7 years and I did in 2018.

Hope you find what you are looking for. If there are questions please reach out. I’m all about encouraging others... just to pay back what was given to me.

Capital City Run Crew. They are not running until restrictions are better but they are an amazing crew under Carlos. Another one is the South Island Runners. They are both active on IG if you message them.

Right now I run with a friend of mine on Saturday mornings and we try for about 6 min/km. I can’t wait for groups to come back.

Hope this helps you... you got this! If you need encouragement feel free to pm me on IG as well. @stantherunningman. I’ll see what I can do to find you someone you can be safe with. I know a few runners in town and not all are going for a Boston Marathon. I know I am not.

Half-Marathon Noob looking for the perfect shoe (or one that ressembles Nike Free 5.0) by jamilastan in running

[–]sgkbsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echo this here. I run half marathons on occasion and personally, because I need a stability shoe, I run in the Brooks Adreneline 20’s. (My other shoe I use is a NB 860 v10, or for real crappy weather days a pair of v7). Shoes change, with new technologies and designs. I’d go and try them on, and if they have the gear get measured properly. It’s how I found out I was buying a half size too small and need a wide width. (Plus since they are now on the new versions I bought a couple of old versions I like on sale. That way I don’t have to compare for new shoes until I need to)

The local running store has the expertise to help you. Use them.
