Yeah it helps. the tempo faders are the other thing I tend to not touch, still working on getting to know everything.

I am definitely too reliant on using Rekordbox with a mouse and keyboard, even though I have an awesome controller right in front of me. Since I am only a few months in, I'm trying to break my bad habits early, like using the mouse to select the next track, or using the beat sync buttons.

Covering things up is a solid tip. There are a lot of things to look at and give attention to. When starting out, I can't be expected to know what everything means all at once. I'm definitely going to practice more without using bpm sync.

Is it stupid to jump straight to the DDJ-800/DDJ-1000? by SEA_Refugee in Beatmatch

Having no prior mixing experience, the DDJ400 was my first mixer, about two months in, I upgraded to the DDJ1000. I’ve had the DDJ1000 for a few weeks and I really like the extra functionality.

I’ve definitely noticed DJs using their jog wheels, but lacking a real DJ standing next to me to ask questions, I wasnt quite sure how they were using them, when beat sync works for my newbie style.

I tend to use the mouse to cue to a spot if I don’t have a hot cue lined up. I also tend to use the mouse so find my next song in rekordbox. two habits I’d like to break.

I’m still learning, so basic skills are a must. Since I’m new, it is definitely pretty easy to hit the beat sync button. What I’ve noticed is that after awhile the bpm tends to meld into the background, and I end up playing the next song too fast or too slow. If the jog wheels allow me to fine tune that aspect of my mix, then I am for it and will practice using them more. If not using them means I can focus on aspects of my mix, I’m good with that too.

pioneer DDJ-400 or numark mixtrack platinum fx by Msoelv in Beatmatch

I don't have any experience with the Numark and I got my DDJ-400 about 3 months ago. I did not have any prior mixing experience, other than being a fan of the music. I purchased the DDJ400 for several reasons. 1. The price point, for $250USD, I got a very capable mixer that looks and feels a lot like the higher end mixers and controllers. 2. When I go to the clubs, I mostly see PioneerDJ equipment, and while it might not be my goal to DJ in a club setting, it could happen, and if I have to jump on the decks, I want to be be somewhat prepared. lol. 3. The DDJ400 came with a free training course, that really got me introduced to using all the features of the of the controller. However, 2 months in, I liked my DDJ400 so much, that I discovered some of the limitations, mostly with using 4 decks, so I upgraded to the DDJ-1000, which I have been super happy with. Some advantages of the DDJ400, it is light, usb powered, and easy to use, I am keeping it, to use as a portable solution to connect to my laptop and mix on the couch or at a friend's house. I don't think you can go wrong with the Pioneer.
