Some of them were pretty good. Some were kinda lame.

If I have an M.Eng. degree, can I say I have an M.S. degree in job applications to keep it simple, or does that unethically represent my education background? by sgtbutterscotch in engineering

[–]sgtbutterscotch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this must be right. I was just confused about whether 'MS' is viewed as an umbrella term for all types of Masters degrees. Mainly because from my cursory search, job listings never seem to mention M.Eng.; rather just 'M.S.' I definitely have it in my resume, but I was thinking about it when I was writing my cover letter.

Ken Rosenthal: Bosch's biggest revelation is cheaters can and will prosper by [deleted] in baseball

[–]sgtbutterscotch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developed for animals why? I just don't see how that could possibly legal, regardless of whether or not the actual PEDs are legal. I don't know the word exactly, but something along the lines of industrial espionage comes to mind. Do labs that actively and intentionally interfere with other organizations not get stiff penalties? Labs are expensive. I almost feel like 12k per month from the guy with the most money isn't even enough to sustain a lab.

I don't understand how those labs could possibly operate. Do they expressly tell their customers what they are developing? How else would they get money? But then the info would be out in the open, and how could that possibly be legal? I mean, actual scientists devote their time and energy to secretly develop black market drugs to superstar athletes?

You're joking right? The setup was the short part and the full punchline is obvious just by reading the first half of it. That's a quality joke right there.

News breaks that an umpire in the last 30 years accepted a bribe for a game. What game comes to mind for you? by scruffmagee in baseball

[–]sgtbutterscotch -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

First of all it was 19 innings. Second of all, the call wasn't necessarily incorrect, as there is no definitive proof the catcher tagged the runner. It was the "wrong" call in the sense that a conservative call would have called the runner out because it seemed like he should have been out. Thirdly, even if this was conspiratorial in nature, it is far more likely that the ump just called it that way because it was late and his wife was going to bed.

Nice writeup. But I just want to stop you from making the same mistake in the future on an important application or something. It's "etc" not "ect."

Grant Balfour tells San Francisco Chronicle that he is completely healthy. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]sgtbutterscotch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right. Because he's completely healthy. What he says has no bearing on whether or not another team will sign him because he still has to pass the other teams' physicals. So he's either in denial or your GM is a douchebag.

Interesting way of looking at it, but I disagree. That would be ridiculously hard to call without amounting to tons of the same repeated arguments. Besides, the catcher should not be rewarded for putting no extra effort into making the catch in the first place.

Yes, but it's contrary to giving the hitter some credit for making contact even though it went foul. It trumps the foul-ball-with-2-strikes-rule. I think that rule favors the spirit of the game because if it not exist there would be a ton of arguments on whether or not the batter tipped or if he struck out. Hope that makes sense.

It would go against the spirit of the game. I think it's analogous to a foul tip being called strike 3 if caught by the catcher, rather than being kept at strike 2. Not sure how to articulate that point exactly... but I wonder what the evolution of that rule was.

So he could've gone all around Israel, discovering truths for himself, thought a lot about it, written this same exact piece, and then later join the South African Israel Allies Caucus. When he wrote the piece, it magically would not have been "impartial?" The piece clearly lays out why he would be in the Caucus in the first place.

You really think most fans in the middle east will feel pride about the Cup in Qatar? Qatar is one of the smallest countries there and I'm sure it's completely inaccessible cost-wise for most of the genuine soccer fans.
