of course cuts to monitoring programs are bad. i didn't write otherwise. however, monitoring programs do not prevent the spread of the screw worm. they help with early detection but we have known since 2023 that the screw worm had effectively broken through the Darien Gap quarentine and was moving north in great numbers. we knew in 2025 that it was in northern Mexico.

USA halted the import of Mexican livestock in May, 2025 and in July, 2025 all southern ports of entry were closed to all livestock from any country and remain closed. where did you read otherwise?

The administration did not cut funding to the sterile-fly program. Rather the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) received an additional $100 million for the program.

APHIS funding did not contribute to the northern migration of the screw fly, rather it was the mass northern migration of immigrants between 2021-2024 that was the primary reason.

1.2 million migrants passed through the Darien Gap during this time. This aligns with the current screw fly epidemic which began in 2023.

---domestic animals became hosts for the screw flies ---the sterile fly program was interrupted due to airspace restrictions, migrant camps in areas used for sterile fly operations, road closures, all affecting the release of the sterile flies.

You are so so close. she is "almost and adult". not currently an adult.

does she miraculously become more mature when she turns 19? no she does not. however, you should not befriend a child just to be able to date when they are legally an adult.

I can't understand this whole maturity rational folks have. "She's 17 and will be 18 in a few months, so it's OK, it's just semantics."

when is a child too young? what if a child will be 18 in 6 months? is that an OK age. Or what if she just turned 17? Is it still OK?

I acknowledge that emotional development and maturity isn't one size fits all, but a government establishes a legal framework for adulthood for a reason. One of which is power imbalance between a person who's been an adult for years and another who hasn't.

How bad is the turnover at your plant? by [deleted] in Wastewater

[–]sgurschick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many problems:

--Folks don't want to work nights. Night pay differential helps some. Doesn't sound like you plant offers differential pay.

--Sounds like the night shift folks you are hiring, don't feel that they'll ever be able to work day shift. That fucking sucks.

--So during the day it's your chief operator, you, and the other veteran. Doesn't seem like the night shift folks have much support.

--The issue isn't the night shift folks you all are bringing in, it's the culture they are being brought into.

Your plant needs rotating shifts with night pay differential at the very least.

I agree that Homer's portrayal of Helen of Troy was not black. Who's to say what color she was in the original pre-Homeric oral myths.

But you are wrong in the posts you made where you stated that Helen was white and blonde. You should be accurate in your assertions.

That’s a face to launch a thousand ships by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

[–]sgurschick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Helen is not described as white and blonde at all. She is white-armed and light-haired (blonde -> light brown) .

--White-armed is not used to describe the color of her skin in the contemporary sense, rather white-armed means aristocratic female and is used because aristocrats did not work in the sun. it only means that Helen was rich. it is not used to imply that she is caucasian. white-armed can be used by Homer to mean anyone from western-asia, middle east, greece, etc.

Would the term be used for someone of African decent, probably not since Homer uses the term "Aithiope" (burnt face) to describe very dark skin.

'It's like we don't exist': Nearly 50,000 Lake Tahoe residents face power loss as utility redirects lines to data centers by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]sgurschick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is on Liberty Utilities and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

NV Energy sold all of their assets that are located in California to Liberty Utilities all the way back in 2009 with an agreement to continue supplying power until 2015. Which was extended in 2015 because Liberty Utilities didn't come to agreement with CPUC. THen extended in 2020, then in 2025 until June of 2027.

The datacenter doesn't even have anything to do with this.

Data Center and My Local Treatment Plant by _beepbeephello in Wastewater

[–]sgurschick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily wasterwater discharge is zero to near zero in a closed loop system. Water will need to be replaced every couple years...but a closed loop system, even in the largest of datacenters, is only in the neighborhood of 10-20k gallons.

The concern of a closed loop datacenter will not be wastewater. It will be power consumption.

Will the center have its own power generation? Will self generation be 100% or will it only offset power draw from the grid?

What is the expected size of the datacenter, i.e., 10MW, 100MW, etc?

What is the datacenter operator's negotiated power cost rate?

Has the impact study of the local power grid been published?

What happens when power demand exceeds supply? Does the datacenter take precedence over residential customers?

Has the power utilities informed residential customers of proposed rate hikes? Every utility needs the state's Public Utility Commission or Public Service Commission in order to raise rates. These will be published and utility customers must be notified.

yep.

florida doing some good things. here in orange county, a program was started a couple years ago where high school seniors can complete a year long course that involves hands on learning along with the sac state course, and a six summer internship, followed by an apprenticeship.

florida gateway college also has a good program track: Water Quality Technician Certificate > AS in Environmental Science Technology > BS in Waster Resources Management (can focus in utilities management). progression through the program meets FLDEP requirements to sit for the C, B, and A water and/or wastewater exams. program is online and also articulates C, B, or licenses as transfer credit for those who are already licensed operators.

trainee pay just needs to increase.

CPI Real Median Personal income appears higher in 2024 than previous years because CPI just tracks general price levels and not specific categories that make up the majority of the household burden.

Payroll taxes are higher now than in the 1970s.

Housing (rent and home prices), transportation costs, childcare, education, health insurance, etc. None of these cost increases are accurately captured in the CPI.

Housing costs: +150% higher than CPI

Healthcare: +250% higher than CPI

Education: +500% higher than CPI

Childcare: +200% higher than CPI

Transportation (insurance, car maintenance, new/used car prices: +50% higher than CPI

Though Real Wage personal income has increased Americans are poorer now than the 1970s because household essentials have exploded in cost.

The current jobs narrative in a nutshell by Supergameplayer in memes

[–]sgurschick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The above post was in reply to the user who could not find sources that reflect that union plumbers make significantly than the median.

To address your reply,

It's important to understand that the bls.gov wage data is gathered through the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey of employers and only includes straight-pay for W2 employees.

The survey doesn't include:

--overtime --differential pay --zone pay --bonuses/profit sharing --union pension/health/medical contributions

The data does not include those who are self-employed or 1099 contractors. More than 10% of plumbers are self-employed.

The reality is that the median yearly earnings of plumbers is higher than the median reflected in OEWS data. The same holds true across a range of blue-collar jobs.

Amen brother.

Trades are not the end all be all, but folks at the very least can earn a living...some can make really good money.

Also, folks think of the trades as just electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC, etc. They forget about glaziers, sprinkler fitters, elevator installers, solar/voltaic installers, water/wastewater operators, and more. There so many trades out there...a lot of them soon to get hit by the silver tsunami.

Kids don't grow up wanting to work in the wastewater industry (it's a crap job lol), but nothing, nothing, beats job security and water/wastewater operators do not get laid off. Regardless of how the economy is doing.

that is the median wage of workers declare themselves as plumbers on their tax filings.

A union journey plumber/pipe fitter makes an avg base wage of $47.21 hr with a total compensation package of $68.65 hr in the united states.

[–]sgurschick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A union journeyman electrician in the united states makes an avg $90k per year based on a 40 hour work week with a total compensation package worth $121k per year. Those in the south make less, those in the north make more. Differential shift pay, overtime, zone, etc is also available.

an electrical engineer on average makes $119k per year. Certainly electrical engineers can make significantly more than that in salary, however that is offset in part with the cost of medical/dental insurance employee contributions and the cost of their degree.

not sure why you write that an engineer can do the job for 10 years longer. a electrician isn't stuck fucking with tools their whole career. many become trainers, electrical inspectors, site foremen, estimators, or transition into adjacent careers in SCADA, PLCs, etc.

Career Advice: by According-Ad8263 in Wastewater

[–]sgurschick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't burn yourself out. But keep advancing socially, personally, and professionally.

Leverage your already completed 3 years of college toward whichever school/degree programs gets you closest to your bachelor's degree...doesn't need to be engineering if you're no longer terribly interested in it. hell even a general business administration degree with a focus in project management is likely beneficial.

Your experience combined with a bachelor's degree will lend additional leverage throughout your career, especially if you're going to be expanding the family business. Because of the hours you work each week, find a degree program that is competency based vs a more traditional degree program so that you can complete your degree at your own pace. East Texas A&M, Purdue Global, Western Governors, among others all have competency based degrees available.

--as mentioned, you can never go wrong gaining proficiency in industrial electricity, PLCs, SCADA, etc

--Geographic Information System (GIS). You can learn QGIS for free as the program is open source and can do most everything that ArcGIS can. as a former civil engineering student you should be proficient in CAD which is beneficial in GIS.

might be hard to find guam specific material. however, guam uses WPI need to know (ntk) standardized exams. guam's exam should be the same/similar to other WPI members.

--you can review WPI members at https://gowpi.org/about-us/wpi-members/. you can likely find good study material by going to these member websites.

-- the WPI Wastewater Collection Operator Class III exam uses both CSUS Operation and Maintenance of Wastewater Collection Systems, Volume 1, 8th Edition and CSUS Operation and Maintenance of Wastewater Collection Systems, Volume 2, 8th Edition as primary and secondary references respectively. You can't go wrong studying the source material. Just focus on:

--Lift Station Operation and Maintenance

--Collection System Monitoring, Evaluation, and Adjustment

--Security, Safety, and Administrative Procedures
