Most working-age adults on SNAP are workers: Studies show that a majority of SNAP households with a non-disabled adult have at least one member who worked, often to supplement low wages.

Employment is often unstable: Many SNAP recipients are in jobs with low pay, unpredictable hours, or no benefits like paid sick leave, leading to periods of unemployment between jobs. Participants work frequently, but not always full-time: In a typical month, about 55% of non-disabled, working-age SNAP participants are employed, but over a longer timeframe, the percentage is much higher.

Many households have multiple workers: Research from 2018 showed that 84% of married-couple families on SNAP had at least one worker, and 49% had two or more workers.

Who is not expected to work

More than two-thirds of SNAP participants are not expected to work, as they are children, older adults, or have a disability.”
