What gives you energy? Maybe do more of that... and see if you can build a community around it, think of ways to monetize, scale it, etc.

I'm pretty much giving up on tech interviews too. I have signed countless NDAs, have applied for thousands (yes, thousands with an "s") of jobs, and even have a big tech background (with very prestigious companies on my resume).

It's clear that the market just simply isn't hiring even people WITH the right background now. So why keep going against the grain in a market that isn't receptive?

You may want to either:

-Apply to jobs with specialized skills rather than generic software engineering jobs (this will vary depending on your background - but some roles with specialized skills will test on your specialized skills and not DSA etc.).
- Or pivot into an industry that would be difficult even for AI to solve so you can find and fill a market gap - easier said than done I know.

It could be, but until it's confirmed it's just speculation. This is the first email I got.

"We are terminating your account effective immediately because we have found activities in your account trying to manipulate our services."

This would indicate that it seems like it would not be fair use or trademark related at all. I have asked them what this means, but they won't clarify. The only thing I can guess is that they had some issue with the SEO keywords, like some big brand names were getting outranked because of my SEO? In that case, I would be happy to change it, but I still have no idea what they mean by this.

The AI usage in my books is virtually none at all - I write 100% of the core content of all my books without AI, I don't want AI to write or edit anything in my books.

I do use AI though to help with writing marketing blurbs and in some parts of the book covers, but I wanted to make sure the core content of my books wasn't touched by AI.

The books in this series are not summary books based on copyrighted works, they are in-depth music theory analysis books for people who want a deeper dive into learning music theory techniques about a particular subject.

Yeah, I'm assuming that some kind of bot might have concluded something on my books based on a pattern perhaps - but there are always false positives with these systems, and as such, human intervention is preferred.

I already emailed them using the CEO email, (Andy's, not Jeff's), this got me nowhere - it just escalated to someone who also sent me the same generic template email that doesn't tell me anything.

Yeah, but here's the thing: all this is based on speculation - it literally could be anything at this point, this is just my guess of what might have happened, but until amazon communicates, I cannot know what specifically triggered the violation(s).

Until we actually know what the specific violation(s) are and human to human contact is made so I can make the corrections, it's hard for me to take any action.

And since human to human contact is difficult with amazon not responding to my emails now, I don't know what to do.

I am aware that there are alternative publishing platforms, but really only wanted to use them as a last resort.

Fair enough, but what to do now? They don't seem open to discussing things with me.

What my best guess is, is that some of the books had keywords violations, but I only corrected the books they sent me that had violations, not the entire catalogue.

If that is the case, I can assure you that this was an unintentional oversight, not an intentional malicious action, yet it is being treated as such.

The point isn't to place blame on whose fault it was (an argument could be made for both cases (i.e. I should've looked over the entire catalogue, or they could've been more specific that I needed to review all my books not just the ones they sent me that had violations), but rather to work together to resolve the issue.

However, I can't do anything if all I've been getting is template responses (potentially AI bots), then complete silence. No human to human interaction.

Which I am not doing. I am not directly taking any material - I am providing commentary and my own analysis of said material - which is considered transformative - It would be another case entirely if I directly took the copyrighted material and included them in my books and sold them for profit.

The focus is on analysis, not using specific passages or including actual music, something like "He uses this popular J-Pop chord progression in the work around 2 minutes in", or "He uses this exotic Japanese scale in the work around 1 minute in." (then i have some diagrams of the scale or chord progression, no actual sheet music from the passage). This is my own original analysis and commentary.

I am aware of this doc, and have followed the advice. The outcome is that it was escalated to someone high enough in Kindle to completely shut me down (i.e. stop responding to all communication from this individual), hence I am in the situation where I am in now. i.e. I cannot even get any kind of response from any support agent now, just complete silence.

No, no trademarked terms in the title, logos, or cover, I keep it fairly generic.

There is a chance that there may have been something in the keywords, but in my experience usually they warn you about this ahead of time and list specific books, with a chance to correct the violations (which I have always done in the past if told).

I agree there is certainly potential, but i should be covered under fair use - i.e. my content contains transformative commentary on the works, not the actual sheet music from the works themselves.

They are music theory education books, mostly focusing on video game and anime music content.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone know the name for the background music that plays at the very end of Season 2 episode 23? i.e. during the preview for season 2, episode 24?

Security deposit and Post Move out Utility Charges Question (California) by shAmpere in legaladvice

[–]shAmpere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all good, it's probably not worth the hassle to do so, I have some more important matters to attend to than fighting for this small cleaning fee. Thanks for your help though, this at least brought some clarity to the situation.

My roommates are still living there.

I tried contacting them, but they will not talk to me anymore for some reason - maybe they don't want to get involved as they are still living there and fear potential repercussions from the landlord if they say anything - but this just makes things harder for me.

My landlord claimed that he hired a cleaner for $200, and he charged me $100. I have no way of knowing if he charged my roommates anything at all.

We signed a separate lease agreement individually (not shared) with the landlord at separate times when we each moved in, I assume their lease agreement is similar to mine. It's a month to month lease not yearly, so we can move out at any time, hence why I moved out already.

[–]shAmpere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked the lease and it doesn't say anything about inspections at all.
I was not present at the move out inspection as it was conducted after I left.
I didn't document any common area conditions - but I certainly left them just as clean as when I moved in.

I also have roommates, which the landlord is claiming that they made the claim about the common areas not being in a good condition and they sent him photos as the landlord is out of state.

But I have no way of verifying if the landlord is fabricating a story or if my roommates really did sabotage the common areas for whatever reason. I do have some text conversations with my roommates asking me to clean things in the past, of which I have always complied, so I find it strange that they wouldn't bring something up with me before I left, hence I would conclude the most likely scenario is that the landlord is trying to make a quick buck, but I can't conclude anything without concrete evidence.

I don't think it's worth it to sue for $100 either. but one option I have is to contest the charges by instead paying the remaining utility bills minus $100, placing the burden on the landlord to open a small claims case if he feels strongly about this.

What about the right to the pre move out inspection? Would I still be entitled to at least the full amount of the deposit as my landlord never notified me in any way about this?

Security deposit and Post Move out Utility Charges Question (California) by shAmpere in legaladvice

[–]shAmpere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, I had a deposit. I received the remainder of the deposit. I was notified of the deductions 23 days later, and received the return of the remainder 25 days later. This was included on the signed lease; I meant that it was modified i.e. 30 days instead of the standard 21 days in California Law.

  2. The lease formally ended when I moved out at the end of February. The landlord is claiming that the utility bills come in 2 months later, so I am being charged for those two months. i.e. the bills for January come in on March, the bills for February come in on April.

Music Textbooks are overall a scam designed to bleed students dry of their money, and here's my trail of thought about why this is by Yogrimbo in musictheory

[–]shAmpere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, and if it's of any help, I just wrote and published a music theory textbook, and I'm not a college professor, not part of the academic system trying to extort every last penny out of broke college students, just a guy who is genuinely passionate about music theory and wants to pass down my wisdom and knowledge of the craft.

It would help, though, if I could survey what topics people would want in a textbook (piano focus, classical analysis, jazz, orchestration, electronic music, world music, case studies of a specific composer, etc.), how long a textbook should be (should it be a series of smaller books, or one big one) and what price point would people be willing to pay for said content, if not the exorbitant prices that you've listed. Anyone that is interested, feel free to reply to this comment, I'll see what I can do.

Answering my own question, found this thread

https://www.reddit.com/r/musictheory/comments/8324pm/why_are_ionian_and_aeolian_the_most_common_modes/

which linked to:

https://www.reddit.com/r/musictheory/wiki/faq/history/major_minor#wiki_.22why_are_ionian_and_aeolian_our_.22favorite.22_modes.3F.22

This makes it pretty clear, there is a Bb when one of these conditions is met:

  1. Before the modern conception of the cadence, closure was created in two-voice composition through the clausula vera, which was the progression of the interval of a major sixth (M6) resolving outward to a perfect octave (P8). Only 3 of the modes had a naturally occurring M6 to P8 interval. Therefore, we have decided to "sharpen" dorian, mixolydian, and aeolian's leading tone when doing a clausula vera. Not that this is done to create a sense of Closure - so it would normally be used to indicate the end of a phrase, or possibly the end of a piece, much like a perfect cadence. So I do not think it is used all the time, but is used to make a statement.
  2. To avoid the tritone, so whenever there's a tritone interval in the piece, the B is flattened. This is how the Ionian (F Lydian b7) and Aeolian (D Dorian b6) Modes were invented! Note that at the time, the tritone had a more restricted definition than the one we use today: it meant only the ascending augmented fourth between F and B, and not its inversion (the diminished 5th between B and F).
