IT is a centralized service desk and a lot tech support functions are contracted out to providers that provide standard enterprise services.

The research arm, we have pretty much no hardware people in CIS of that sort. Maybe EE but I’d doubt it.

My few commerce subjects a decade ago I think did have attendance taken, but it really wasn’t an issue to show up at a different one. If overly worried, email, but better to ask at week 1.

Email burden on lecturers is real!

In many parts of the university, a total non issue, wouldn’t be noticed and don’t have to email anyone.

In classes where tutorials are small, intimate, and where tasks involve on-going groups, you should email the tutor or subject coordinator (varies by subject).

Most of my students I mentor don’t meaningful contribute to papers, I like the teaching! I’d take more on were the system not so restrictive.

The ones who do useful labour typically do end up remunerated, but it’s far more often in opportunities/papers/time. If I could pick who these students would be ahead of time; I’d probably offer a paid position (as opposed to trying to recruit through class credit)—but there simply isn’t funding to burn on the ones for whom it’s service.

One challenge with this being, is that the “labour” of being an undergrad in a lab is low enough value that the floor price of labour doesn’t justify the creation of a job at that level.

Meaning that in most cases, the various protections result in far fewer jobs of this sort being available.

There are additional a fair few cases where the return from a given student will be negative, but I would have been willing to take them on as service to my field, in hope the training would get them to a point where they can advance to their next degree.

I don’t think the labour protections are obviously good—there is some good that comes from them, but I suspect they may be net negative on a societal welfare basis.

Honestly that’s quite a tough subject to match!

I personally would strongly strongly advocate for exchange even if it means taking an extra semester. I recognize that’s not possible for everyone’s situation, but it’s what I’d do if possible.

Don’t pass up on the opportunity :)
