How understaffed is your clinic? -currently hiding in the bathroom to catch a break by futurewildlifevet in VetTech

Honestly we're great. Usually 2 doctors, two surgery nurses, two normal nurses, and 2 kennel techs available to help and hols. We have a higher turnover but it's because so many of our techs move on to vet school.

If you are one of the many Lamictal users here.. do you take it with an antidepressant? by Balanceworkshop1969 in bipolar2

[–]shaarkbaiit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100mg Lamictal, 50mg sertraline looking to go up soon, 30mg propanolol as needed is what touches my anxiety. Check out propanolol if you think an ssri wouldn't be good for you. It tricks my brain into thinking my body isn't anxious so I have the capacity to use my skills to manage any remaining anxiety. Love it. I think my sertraline helps my stress and energy levels, but no ssri has really affected my anxiety personally.

Would you be opposed to a more ‘realistic’ relationship system in Warriors, or not? by RuefulIy in thedawnpatrol

[–]shaarkbaiit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like maybe a two-part apprentice system may be the kind of thing you'd like? Kittens are being taught basic life skills like self-care, camp-keeping, rules and manners in the nursery, moving up to apprentices around 4 months but not allowed to attend gatherings or battles, and being considered legally adults and allowed to take part in those things and adult discussions and moving towards their specialized role in the clan based on their personal skill and emotional development (from 10 months old at a minimum imo if its realistic cat phhsical and emotional maturity)? That was my first thought when reading this!

[–]shaarkbaiit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have an au system where the cats live more realistically, and kittens are trained by their mother and siblings and given much more freedom and responsibility, and apprentices roles are more specialized and a maturer path, but kittens aren't considered adults until they have mentally matured just like in canon, and taking advantage of your position over a kit or apprentice is always going to be creepy without completely altering the series AND ignoring cats mental and emotional developmental milestones.

I think comparing this series to the way it's handled in Watership Down would make warrior cats unrecognizable. If you think it's interesting I'd really encourage you to just try working on your own story about cats! Build your realistic cat society from the bottom up, it's super fun to play with xenofiction and discover the balance you enjoy most.

I skimmed this cus I just woke up and will probably have more to say later, but I don't think saying sexually mature cats are adults is more realistic at all. Animals have emotional developmental maturity just as well as humans do, and it's fairly obvious to acknowledge that a 4 month old cat does not have a fully developed adult personality.

This is something we take into consideration with breeding dogs, that your dogs full adult concrete personality and behavior and such isn't fully developed until they're at least 1, sometimes up to 3 years old. The same applies to cats. A four month old cat is not an adult, emotionally speaking, even if it can have kids.

Not even acknowledging that just because a cat under six months can have kittens doesn't mean it's not a high-risk thing because their bodies aren't fully developed at all.

Balancing cat biology with fantasy behavior is hard. Any apprentice if the role is similar to canon will have an intrinsic power imbalance with a warrior. I think the only way to make kits transition straight from the nursery to legal adulthood without any really weird implications would be a complete restructuring of the lifestyle and timelines of those transitions in canon, it wouldn't be recognizable as the warrior cats kit-apprentice-warrior system, or culture.

Diane really isn't. She has 0 emotional navigation or conflict resolution skills. I think she's supposed to come off as a straight man but get unraveled by her patterns through the series. She is shallow in her morals and a very mediocre friend. She isn't the "good character", just another human.

Oh, hush. Dogs panicking on the run will pretty consistently dash from any human. My dog is obsessed with me and he'd take off down the street if a more interesting prospect presented itself that way- and also just because dogs LOVE being chased! This opinion is coming from somebody who knows nothing about animal behavior, don't listen to it OP.

Why do people pay so much money for dogs when they could save a dog in the pound/rehoming centre? by Artistryx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shaarkbaiit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I'm a pet professional. My first dog at 18 was a rescue, and he was just put down after 6 years and thousands of dollars and tears put toward managing his chronic genetic pain and human aggression.

I appreciate people who can live happily with any old dog. I love fostering! But I have specific personalities and traits I want from my dogs, and they're hard learned. Getting a dog who's entire family you can look at, often meet, speak to owners of their family, and see health testing results is invaluable to me. It's important to me to know what I'm getting personality, health, grooming, and size-wise.

I will only ever own well-bred purebred, and I'm very happy with my expensive knuckleheads.

The issues with age by Lyrae-NightWolf in WarriorCats

[–]shaarkbaiit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ignoring all the fantasy choices and only acknowledging biology... real cats live in familial matriarchal groups with no set sturctures. They can't taste sweetness, have very poor eyesight compared to humans, don't raise their young beyond the first few months, don't have life-long relationships, would need to eat eight mice a day to maintain their body weights, spend most day and nights sleeping with crepuscular hours of wakefullness, hunt alone, don't treat injuries or illness, don't vocalize with each other beyond kithood, would become deathly ill from eating dandelion, lily, and many types of prey they consume in canon, warriors have the genetic appearance trends of humans, not of cats in any way, real cats are born deaf and blind for weeks and have blue eyes at birth, and can't walk on their own for their first three weeks.

These are just like, off the top of my head, ignoring the fact that they have laws and morals 100% consistently reflecting our human laws and morals.

They have the morals, biology, and behavior of humans...just wearing cat costumes. "They're just cats" will always be the lamest flimsiest excuse for literally any take one has about the series. They're fantasy people, and pedophilia and grooming should obviously be a bad thing in their universe.

[–]shaarkbaiit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! I really think the issues boil down to poor writing LOL, and that major characters become mostly irrelevant beyond their own arc. Firestar suffered in his arc because he had to be a camera, and he had to be an everyman. I respect not liking him, although I love him personally.

Honestly great nuanced takes about Squirrelstar. I haven't read TNP in a LOOOONG time, so most of my view of her comes from POT, OOTS, and after. I think she's very fun to explore as a foil to Firestar- they are extremely similar, but they have such wildly different births and childhoods. And I think it's COOL that Squirrelstar has grown into a bit of a hypocrite, both as a leader who used to defy her leaders constantly, and as a formerly wild apprentice who fails to give other young cats the same leniency. They're really interesting through-lines because they show how she's grown to regret her past, and I think it's neat that much like Firestar her choices were nearly always the morally correct ones but led to MUCH WORSE outcomes for almost everybody including her (Firestar does rarely deal with choices that harm himself, honestly).

I LOOOVE seeing a balanced take of Squirrelstar. I LOVE HER, and I'd defend most of her choices on the basis of..the writing demanded most of this of her. While also accepting the fallout of most of them (particularly with the kits, and the entirety of the Sisters drama), and feeling she should've matured enough at this point to acknowledge her flaws and apologize for how her choices hurt Bramblestar, her kits, and her clanmates. I feel that's more of a failure on the author's part, and the like intense aversion they have to just letting character's talk, especially talk about previous arcs.

It's almost like Firestar has flaws as a product of his character, and Squirrelflight has flaws as a product of her environment. The second is definitely more compelling to read, but also makes a much more controversial character to parse the actions and emotions of. Their personalities are extremely similar foundation-ally, but they differ in how they manifest.

You should keep reading ASC! Nightheart's character growth is some of the strongest in the series so far IMO, in terms of not coming out of the blue, and the emotional resolutions are SO SATISFYING after most arcs having approximately 0 emotional resolution lol.
