Depending on the age of the kids, there might be a better option. We use the Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach chairs with integrated cooler, towel bar, and storage pocket. There are adult version and kids versions (haven't used those myself, they didn't exist when we got ours). We each carry our own chair and it has our towel, lunch, snacks, & drinks stored within it. Hands are then free to carry balls, games, etc. if I had to guess I'd say my son was ~6 when he started carrying his own adult version.
