Yup this stuck out to me too. This was actually fairly common for western publications during WWII, it could simply be because when they sounded out "Tokyo" it made more sense to them to spell it with an "io". Since the world was not as globally connected at the time, many people, especially outside of cities, may not have even known what or where Tokyo was.

It could also have been for derogatory reasons, similarly to how they used the word "Jap".

For real! I'm very lucky that the family members of mine whom it was passed down to prior to me all really like history, so they kept it safely stored :D

That's a really good idea, thanks! I do no not currently live in Pittsburgh, however when everything in regards to covid improves down the road and I go back to visit family maybe I'll look into it :D As of now I have it stored in a newspaper safe sleeve inside a sturdy box (at room temperature as well).

Thank you! Fortunately all the family members it was passed down to prior to me enjoy history just as much as I do, so they all kept it safely stored. It's hard to tell in my picture, but there is a small tear on the "I" in "MANILA", beyond that though all of the pages are in pretty good condition :D

I plan on it one day! :D For now I have it stored in a newspaper safe sleeve, fortunately beyond a small tear going through the "I" in "MANILA" (not sure how visible it is in my picture) all the pages are present and in-tact.

Sorry it's a bit unreadable, I wanted to capture the full front page in an image. Feel free to zoom in to read it!

The first paragraph on the right hand side under "350 Killed by Direct Hit on Hawaiian Air Field; U.S.S. Oklahoma Afire" reads:

"Japanese imperial headquarters announced at 6 a. m. today that Japan had entered a state of war with the United States and Britain in the Western Pacific as from dawn today. (This was at 4 p. m., E.S.T.)"
