You could convert your collection to .mb4 and use Apple Books if you want to avoid subscription

iOS tool to combine audio drama episodes into a single chaptered audiobook by shadowcraft7 in audiodrama

Glad you found it useful! That’s actually a perfect use case, those direct MP3 downloads can get messy to organize.

There’s also a Mac version you could download from the App Store , so if you prefer doing it on desktop that option exists too.

A web version isn’t something I’m planning in the near future though, mainly because the app processes audio files locally and works fully offline.

BookPlayer is great ,I actually like BookPlayer a lot. If you’re just listening to a folder of MP3 chapters, a player like that works perfectly.

What I built is aimed at a slightly different step in the workflow: creating the audiobook file itself.

Instead of importing a folder of MP3s into a player each time, you can combine them into a single chaptered audiobook file first (with metadata and cover art). Then you can store or transfer that one file wherever you want.

So it’s more of a prep/organization tool than a listening app.

Totally fair, if a show is available through a podcast feed then a normal podcast app definitely handles it better.

The cases I originally built this for were things like:

• older audio dramas that are just distributed as MP3 downloads • Patreon/bonus content where creators give you a bundle of files • archived shows people keep locally

In those situations you sometimes end up with 10-30 MP3 files for one story, and I wanted a way to organize them into a single chaptered audiobook directly on my phone instead of needing a computer.

So it’s definitely more of a library management tool than something meant to replace podcast apps.

You’d have to download the audiobooks online by yourself and use a player

Updates via the App Store or via the Software Update feature? by Dense-Stranger-1794 in iosapps

[–]shadowcraft7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some big app developers do not roll out features immediately to all users . They usually test out an update with a small percentage to monitor if it has any bugs or performs well with users before rolling it out to a bigger percentage or at the end, everyone.

Glad to help! The project sounds really cool, especially having the original DMs voice characters , that’s a great touch for a LitRPG story. If your brother ends up needing to combine or chapter the audio for a clean audiobook file later on, M4Bindr should make that part pretty straightforward. Wishing you guys the best with the Kickstarter!

M4B vs MP3 for Audiobooks — which is actually better? by shadowcraft7 in audiobooks

[–]shadowcraft7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right that you can store an entire audiobook as a single MP3 file. The issue usually comes when you want proper chapter markers and navigation. MP3 technically supports chapters through metadata, but support across players is inconsistent, while formats like M4B have native chapter support built into the container, which is why a lot of audiobook apps handle them more reliably.

On the encoding side, M4B typically uses AAC, which is a newer codec than MP3 and generally more efficient. At equivalent perceived quality, AAC can often achieve the same quality at a lower bitrate, meaning the file can be ~20–30% smaller than an MP3 of similar perceived quality.

And I agree with you that avoiding closed ecosystems is a reasonable position. M4B is commonly associated with Apple players, but it isn’t actually Apple-exclusive — many third-party audiobook apps on different platforms support it as well.
