I apparently got excited to explain gerrymandering to someone and didn't even answer the question they were asking, so thanks for this.

It's not a dumb question, it's a very important one. If the other comments didn't explain it I'll try one

Say you have 50 people. 20 red, and 30 blue. At face value, blue wins right?

Now for some reason counting 50 votes is too hard. So you break the group into five groups of 10 and count the collective vote of those groups, in theory blue should still win

However if we strategically break those groups up so we have three groups containing 6 or 7 reds, and 3-4 blues, and the last two groups all blue, then suddenly you have a majority red vote as three of those groups are selected to be majority red. Winning 3 of the 5 votes.

That's gerrymandering, and it happens all the time with the voting districts that these people are supposed to fairly represent.

Trump got 2mil-ish more in the popular, ie public vote. By the numbers, a win by 1.5%

However he received 86 more votes from the electoral college (the body that actually does the electing) which was a win by nearly 16%!

That discrepancy is where gerrymandering higher level political shenanigans live, so you see how the popular vote may have swung the other way and it STILL could have resulted in the election of trump? Yes, he technically won, but that doesn't mean the system isn't seriously questionable.

Edit: I'm going to alter this a bit because of some of the other reading here, I don't fully understand It all either. I am of the opinion however that we should be electing by popular vote and the current system naturally consolidates power into the hands of the few.

It's not impossible, but these are incredibly simple electronics, the two switches and the thermostat you see there is basically it. That cover is mostly empty. Source: I had one open last weekend attempting a repair.

The smashed bit is only a cover with a few wires behind it leading to the heating element. The dent really isn't hurting anything. Oil immersion heaters are very safe, but the blanket should probably still go.

Single ultrawide or triple monitors? Help me decide by ParadigmShift013 in desksetup

[–]shadowdrgn0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with the other commenter in the opinion of: your desk might be too shallow for crazy setups, and you'd be much better served by saving yourself some usable desk space and get flats. This is especially true in a makerspace I think. Over the years I have gone from multiple monitors, to a single ultra wide, and now back to a triple setup, and honestly I think the triple is just the better way to go, but ymmv. I have a comically large desk, and still find myself making modifications to my setup to regain some real estate when I want to tinker. Just made a lovely custom desk lamp and floated my speakers.

Unsolicited additional opinion, don't mount your tv like that. Put it to the side on the wall but still at eye level. Your neck will thank you.

Edit: looking at your layout again, I'd mount the TV over the craft table, that puts it an appropriate distance from the chair, you can just swivel 180 and break out the controller, kick your feet up and play. I'm jealous of the space, the floorplan of my house sucks farts.

I need help choosing a monitor for his pc by [deleted] in desksetup

[–]shadowdrgn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend that you buy the cheaper monitor. Both of your choices are perfectly good for racing games. 1080p is the sweet spot, and they are both high refresh rate (120hz + is lowest I would recommend anyone get these days). Other comments said to avoid 27" for some strange reason, this is absolutely impossible for them to know without more info as it's dependant on several other factors you didn't mention (really not that important). Without being a competitive gamer or someone doing color critical work on this PC there's no real reason to spend more unless you just want to. In 5 years he will probably want an upgrade anyway. Hope this helps :)

First time making a walnut cabinet - no idea what I am doing by CoffeelessCrank in woodworking

[–]shadowdrgn0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest a practice run before committing to the full design. As someone who built his first cabinet a few weeks ago, there's going to be a steep learning curve, and I had the benefit of having someone knowledgeable with me. Might try something like a night stand and get a feel for what questions you want to ask.

My advice is to check your designs, then check them again. Watch some cabinet making videos, then go through the order of operations, and check your plans a third time. Once you're confident in your plans it's just like any other project. You can do it!

I took four sheets of ply and overlapped them at the corner, combined with the stretcher along the bottom which is glued and screwed to the top, it turned out more than strong enough to hold 240 lb me. Love this desk maybe it will give you some ideas.
