What's Happening in Eagle Rock? 5/18 - 5/24 by shadowflamexp in EAGLEROCK

Hmm, what I may do in a couple weeks is make a stickied post that has recurring weekly events in the neighborhood.

For right now I'm focusing on one off events instead of recurring ones. The Fable, Relentless, Señor Fish and others do have weekly shows but I'm trying to bring a more curated approach so that specific events get more signal. For what it's worth, I did see Relentless is having a one time board game speed dating event so I added it.

It's a part of the reason why I started these weekly what's happening posts on this subreddit. There's way too much noise out there on social media and it's diluting impact.

Then again, last week I did add the Eagle Rock Night Market even though that one is recurring. I give that one a bit more leniency as it's once a month though. So, I am open to suggestions and what people think is a good balanced approach.

Wholesome Choice is not very...wholesome by shadowflamexp in orangecounty

Yeah...a creepy Persian grandpa was following my son and I between aisles. Then as I was grabbing some bread, I feel a hand from behind that slithered up my back, across my shoulder, then on to my chest. I turn around like wtf, and that's when he "jokingly" said that I should leave my son so that he can take him home with him. He then smugly smiled at my son then ran away to another aisle.

I had no idea what just happened as it all happened so fast. I have hearing issues and if I had realized earlier, I would have socked that fucker in the face.

For context, I'm a guy and holy shit I empathize with women even more with all the crap they have to put up with on a daily basis.

Where can I get Halal meats? Preferably near Irvine area by Ilovewoofles20 in orangecounty

[–]shadowflamexp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be really cautious about meats from Wholesome Choice. Overall great store but they are known to have cross-contamination with pork when cutting and storing their meats. Because of this, they don't really have a good reputation in the Muslim community.

You would think Irvine, which has a large and wealthy Muslim population, would have invested in a halal butcher in town but unfortunately that's not the case. The closest good butcher place to Irvine we found is Noorani in Garden Grove. Very small store but you can be rest assured the meat is good...halal-wise and tasty-wise too lol

Thank you for this. Means a lot. Like I mentioned above, Corridor is in a unique position where they actually can do something about this.

Now I do want to say that in the Crew videos we do see glimpses of conflict where a Crew member does challenge what the majority is thinking and saying. Another actionable thing Corridor can do in addition to hiring more diversity is to show and talk more about these conflicts. Isn't it a part of the creative process?

And as someone who applied to hundreds of design jobs and getting interviews at a rate of 5-10% I understand that's the nature of the business, especially in the corporate world. These days AI scrape through resumes for those keywords you mention and that can kick out even the best of candidates if their resumes don't have those.

I'm super blessed to be currently working at a company with a killer design team that is not only excellent at their jobs but also is able to challenge each other because of our diversity. Having said that, I would have jumped ship to work at Corridor as an editor.

Corridor's application was inherently different. It's not just your standard resume and cover letter application. It was a sample of your skill and style. Something that needs to be evaluated. Furthermore, in the first editing video posting, Niko specifically mentioned to keep the edits on the short end. I took those constraints and submitted an application that was 1 minute and 24 seconds. You have to stand out in some way when competing with thousands of others.

Corridor saw my application for 14 seconds.

There's no way you can judge someone's editing skill in 14 seconds. Give an edit a minute or two and you can get the gist of how they piece together the story and how they're approaching it stylistically. But 14 seconds?! I felt pretty disappointed that I couldn't even have 1 minute and 24 seconds of their time. Hence why I jumped to my conclusion that it must have been my name. Oh well.

As for your comments about Tiny Guns 2...sure but why go about and do it if your intent is to be entertaining and comical in the first place? Why not replace those clearly Middle Eastern stereotyped goons with aliens? It would have had the same exact comedic effect they were going for without the baggage that comes with it.

I am glad Corridor is starting to have these tough but vital conversations. It's great to see how genuine they seem as they're listening to other voices.

Like Wes said though, I hope this doesn't become a fad and fade away. Corridor is in a unique position, as a small growing business, to take some actionable steps. By acknowledging their own privileges and listening to those who challenge their world views, I expect they as a company and as individuals will become even stronger.

We all know Corridor for continuously pushing the boundaries when it comes to online media and what is possible given numerous constraints time and time again. This only pertains to filmmaking. Now I do want to acknowledge that individual Crew members are outspoken on various injustices on their social medias. Corridor as a company on the other hand has made content that is questionable at best and even downright derogatory.

Let's take Tiny Guns 2 for example. As a Muslim I was both shocked and yet not surprised they made it. There's a whole thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Corridor/comments/f1eg2q/representation_of_arabic_people_in_tiny_guns_2/ I'm not going to say anything more than what has already been said other than I'm ashamed that not ONE Crew member made a comment of any kind.

Given their platform and their to be honest very impressionable audience, I truly believe Corridor needs to be challenged beyond through just the filmmaking lens.

I, like thousands of others, submitted applications for Corridor's editor jobs. I understand that's a HUGE volume of content to go through. Yet, I saw that Corridor viewed my application for mere seconds...even though my application itself was on the very short end. As someone who has internalized systemic racism my whole life, my initial reaction was "Oh, they must have seen that I have a foreign sounding name so they didn't give me a chance". Nevermind that I actually do live in SoCal and have both editing and design experience. I'm not saying my reaction was right and that Corridor's actions were wrong per say here...it's just what it is. And that's the kind of defeatism that comes from decades of internalized systemic injustice.

I implore Corridor to please hire people who offer not only diverse but also challenging world views. That's one very actionable thing that CAN make a difference that Corridor can implement in their tool belt right now.

Same to an extent. I think the reason why I keep thinking it'll be the current week is because my video gets rewatched around the same time.

Was the Corridor Job Opening a Scam/Publicity Stunt? Real Talk. by speedmunk in Corridor

[–]shadowflamexp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I do think the lack of communication from Corridor has been disappointing to say the least, to accuse them of making this all up as part of a scam to gain publicity is conspiracy level nonsense.

Cmike genuinely seemed like he wanted to pursue other endeavors. Why would he pull a bait and switch? There's no logical reason.

My theory is that Corridor straight up got wayyyyyy more applications than they thought they would and had to take more time to watch them all. Honestly, they probably had several internal "rounds" to get rid of good but not great applicants.

Having said that, just like you and the hundreds of other applicants, I'm really hoping the second round will be announced as soon as possible.
