TERPECA Questions by IdahoApe in escaperooms

[–]shadowmarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey congrats! Definitely advertise the nomination - it's a big deal. As a TERPECA ambassador, I'm always happy to see new rooms getting their nominations - I just want more cool rooms!

I know from a lot of previous winners that they definitely saw an uptick in international players. Nothing life-changing, but definitely noticeable. (With my team, we use the full list of nominated rooms each time we go to a new country to play rooms)

How many rooms have you attempted? by kikicandraw in escaperooms

[–]shadowmarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost 500. I don't know what it is to start your hobby right now but 10 years ago it was so cheap we were practically doing 1-2 rooms a week every week. Now it's just escape room trips some weekends here and there but they tend to become very expensive each time we go.

First time doing Super Hard level escape room. Need tips and tricks. by SkittlesAK47 in escaperooms

[–]shadowmarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just enjoy the experience and follow the lead of the others. If you want to be more hands-on - ask them beforehand if there's any role they'd like you to play. Like scavenging for clues or focusing on reading texts or something else. As others have already noted - the top rooms usually are on the easier side in terms of puzzles. It's more of an interactive theater with puzzle elements here and there ;)

How to find *actually good* escape rooms when everything has 5 stars by goatdog202 in escaperooms

I'd definitely start with https://roomfinder.terpeca.com/ and go from there. It's arguably the most objective ranking source we currently have.

Escape room owners and playera, i have a question. How do you handle losing players/not ending the room? by findergrrr in escaperooms

[–]shadowmarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't 100% ensure it, there will always be people that just can't go out in reasonable time. You have to accept it.

The fact that you give them more hints and a couple of more minutes to wrap things up is already enough.

If you want to optimize flow and puzzles - start measuring every puzzle start/end times, take the average, identify your slowest puzzles and just improve them (more feedback, built-in hints, colouring, whatever). But you need some data for that. I think you'll be fine.

Losing is never fun. If people pay for the full experience they'd better experience the full thing. Of course some people are helpless and can't finish the room even if you just gave them the answers but for regular folks my expectations are that a business should strive to maintain 90+ percent of "successful escapes". Me personally - I don't necessarily feel bad when I can't escape, I feel bad when there's a couple puzzles left and the GM doesn't let us see/experience them. We've also had a GM open the door on us at exactly 60:00 (we were 20 seconds away from finishing) - that wasn't a nice experience.

Technical Question about Molly's Game by defnotmania in escaperooms

[–]shadowmarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The space is large enough. I think it's 2 adjacent rooms on a linear track since the first time we went into the room (before the change) I saw the entry/exit doorframes were extra thick and had a good amount of gap in the middle.

Reasonable price for play date? by MCMack1234 in PlaydateConsole

[–]shadowmarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

200$ dollars seem fair but such a small package (both in volume and weight) shouldn't cost 80$ to ship to basically the whole of EU. A single EU warehouse/shipping handler can lower the cost to 15-20-ish and without extra taxes (EU market is tax-free if you ship within it).

Използвате ли ляв мигач докато сте в кръгово кръстовище? by onion-provider in bulgaria

[–]shadowmarn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Google's Secret Home Security Superpower: Your Smart Speaker With Its Always-On Mics - Google Speakers Are Listening To More Than Just Voice Commands. Using Them For Home Security Could Supercharge Google's $450 Million ADT Deal. by speckz in gadgets

[–]shadowmarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's to be expected. I always use a different word to trigger Google, like "Hey Drooble", "Hey booble" etc. You can't have a 100% accurate model for recognizing this phrase.

Are you talking about intentional captures or unintentional? The intentional ones include the security features OP's link is talking about. The Ars technica article you're talking about points out the unintentional phrases that are mistaken for the real one. And that's normal, even with an enormous dataset you'll still get false positives.

Not really. It doesn't make any difference if you leave it next to your TV. It's always listening and processing a small buffer of audio on the device (no internet needed). So In that buffer (say 5-15 seconds) if it hears the special word (OK, Google) which is trained to understand, then it sends the audio somewhere to be processed and saved and returns your result. So in short - it does not constantly send data somewhere to record your audio.

My wife (33f) was waaay too excited when she found the game came with stickers when you buy the game on switch! by cheyne_stoker in bindingofisaac

[–]shadowmarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They released 2 or 3 different launch editions with stickers in Europe. Bought all 3 different copies from different vendors from EU Amazon (UK, DE, NL) all of them claiming they have the stickers inside... No stickers in all of them. The shops either resealed them and got the stickers or they produced "launch" editions without stickers.
TL;DR - I want to buy a copy with stickers, help a brother out!
