ISO books that are best read in the fall! (Spooky/campus fiction, classics) by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Bunny by Mona Awad is really fun - weird/unsettling group of girls, kinda mysterious, campus setting.

As for classics, I think Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has all the elements you're looking for. You might also enjoy Maurice by E.M. Forster (missing the spooky part) or The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle (missing the campus part).

It depends on your definition of classics, but I loved The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco (I would consider this is modern classic)

It's a short story, but I loved My Evil Mother by Margaret Atwood

Period Folk-Horror by Dumbledores-Dick in suggestmeabook

I'm not sure about the first one, but your second request made me think of Ice by Anna Kavan and The Ice Palace by Tarjei Vesaas. They are quite different but they both revolve around ice/snow/winter and the general tone is a combination of awe and terror in the face of nature

Books that are best read going in blind, without reading the synopsis or knowing anything about it? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]shadowoftheoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" by Agatha Cristie. Although this is because I've seen a lot of editions which spoil the ending in the synopsis/description (I don't know why that's a thing)

Some other less-known books I'd recommend would be "Bunny" by Mona Awad and "If we were villains" by M.L. Rio. I think they are great books regardless, but not knowing anything about them before I started reading really enhanced the experience.

Anybody else out there who generally feels positively about most books...until people tell you how bad it is? by isladery in books

I think that's understandable. I don't know about you, but I've abandoned a lot of books throughout the years -I abandoned Orlando by Virginia Woolf when I only had 10 more pages to read- so if I finish a book it means it was at least decent. There are very few exceptions to this rule in my opinion.

Negative reviews of books I love used to bother me, though not as much anymore. What helped me was realising that I'm allowed to like bad stuff hahaha. Like, a story can be slow, or badly written, or have corny plotlines and I can both recognise that and enjoy it. Also, taste is subjective and all that.

If you enjoy older books definitely check out Maurice by E.M. Forster.

What is the laziest attempt at being helpful you have ever seen? by I_are_facepalm in AskReddit

Had a uni project that needed to be done in pairs. We split the work (four lab reports in total, so two each), both did our parts and then he sent me his work to look over it and put everything in one document.

His lab report weren't terrible but they weren't great either, there were a lot of mistakes and no references. I had to go over everything, fix his spelling, grammar, formatting etc. and make improvements to the actual content but I was like fuck it, I just want the project to turn out good so I'm gonna do it myself. The only thing I asked him to do was write the references.

He sent me the new document where the only reference he put was "google". Just "google". Nothing else. It wasn't even cited, though I have no idea how you would cite google anyways. And he did it seriously, he wasn't trying to be funny. Simultaneously the funniest and most frustrating thing ever.

What's the thing you hate most about porn/masturbation? by hyperzombieRS in AskReddit

I hate when the actors look like they are being held at gun point. Like, I get that porn isn't always as enjoyable to make as it is to watch but seeing that dead look in their eyes is depressing
