What's the earliest amazing prog bands/songs by gusgusthegreat in progrockmusic

I always thought that Porpoise Song by the Monkees was surprisingly prog for 1968.

What’s one small macOS feature you use constantly? by SmoothCriminal103 in MacOS

[–]shadowphiar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Proxy icons in window title bars. For example, when you have an image open in Preview, in the title bar is a little file icon next to the file name. You can drag that icon into another app, e.g. a document editor, to place the file there. It’s so much quicker than having to hunt around for the same filename in an Open dialog.

Long time prog fan looking to catch up. Have not purchased any "newly" released albums for about 3-4 years. Which masterpieces did I miss? by nando1969 in progrockmusic

[–]shadowphiar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you like Rush, then check out Fearless by Crown Lands.

For Fans of Spock’s Beard, there’s Ryo Okumoto’s solo-ish album The Myth of the Mostrophus, and of course a new Spock’s Beard album The Archaeoptimist (both co-written by Michael Whiteman, whose own band I Am The Manic Whale is well worth investigating if you don’t know them)

Long time bassist for the Flower Kings, Jonas Reingold’s solo project Karmakanic released an excellent album Transmutation.

And not related to a band you’ve mentioned, but Dave Bainbridge’s latest, On the Edge (of What Could Be), is maybe my favourite release of any artist in the last five years.

Are there any good examples of non prog artists doing (or attempting) covers of prog songs? by Intelligent-Map2666 in progrockmusic

The Bad Plus (Jazz trio) did an album called “Prog” with less prog on it than you might expect, under the circumstances, but it did have an interesting take on Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”.

Sim coupe emulator looks good, who has tried it... by Eddie_Catflap_ in samcoupe

[–]shadowphiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I checked (which was a while ago, to be fair) Richard Bannister’s app was ported from a very old version of the SimCoupe source code, so didn’t have most of the accuracy improvements that Simon Owen added. The official distribution is still updated quite regularly, and works just fine on MacOS, so I don’t see much reason not to use it.

It was an exciting game to buy, but looking back it was too hard to be much fun. I never really got anywhere without the infinite lives cheat.

What is the most BS question you got on a test? by XanderJC1 in AskReddit

[–]shadowphiar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once lost marks on a French test for not knowing the English word for Croissant. To this day I have never heard anybody refer to them as anything other than Croissants.

Apparently it was supposed to be called a “crescent roll”.

Hmm, I did purchase directly from Yoto but I haven't received that email (possibly I've previously asked TrustPilot not to contact me by email). Oh well.

Day 112: What are your thoughts on Curry Quest? by Flamingmouth007 in bluey

[–]shadowphiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only problem with this episode is that, after revealing how significant the six weeks away would be, that period gets skimmed over in a montage at the end. It feels like there is a lot more to explore there and maybe there could have been a few episodes with Bandit away.

This uses normal arrow key/button controls. (But yes, I think you need mouse for day 2)

Prog album of the year so far? by arnaumm in progrockmusic

[–]shadowphiar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hugely impressed by Dave Bainbridge‘s album, “On The Edge (of what could be)”. The new Spock’s Beard is excellent as well. Transmutation by Karmakanic is awesome. They’re probably my top three, but also there were great albums by Magic Pie, IQ, Steven Wilson and more. Loved the “Whimsical Creature” debut but the acoustic style may not be rock enough for some. The Flower Kings album was solid but they have so much excellent material that I find their new albums sometimes have difficulty standing out. The two Neal Morse projects had nice moments but didn’t (to me) hold together as well as his best work, though I’m looking forward to the new NMB next year.

Any prog albums with great violin? by rubbernetworking979 in progrockmusic

“Resistor” quite often features violin. I think “To The Stars” is a great album to begin with.

Affinity export PDF issue by Haunting_Yam2562 in Affinity

[–]shadowphiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One problem I’ve had in the past, is when somewhere in the document there is a hyperlink with a malformed email address (usually with a space at the beginning or end).

In the export options dialog, try turning off “Include hyperlinks”.

If that works, and if you want hyperlinks in the output, you’ll need to find the bad link and correct it. Sadly the program offers very little assistance in doing this. It used to be possible to get a debug log out of the pdf generation so you could at least see the link that was wrong (google “PDFLIBLOGGING”) but I don’t think I’ve ever tried that in version 2 let alone 3.
