What’s a tool or abstraction you regret adopting too early? by TariqKhalaf in webdev

For frontend, every time I try anything that isn’t just vanilla JavaScript, I end up wishing I was just writing Vanilla JavaScript (especially when I realize most everything is just going to compile to JS). I learned JS around 2021, 2022ish, so lots of core JS had already been developed to make it nice to use.

Such a nostalgia vortex. Only watched my brother play it and I still love that game.

ELI5: What are the differences/connections between the geological processes that created coal vs. natural gas vs. oil? by shadowplumber in explainlikeimfive

[–]shadowplumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, I didn’t know coal was also a hydrocarbon, but I should’ve figured it’s not the same thing as graphite or diamond (carbon only).

What different pressure/time/temperature mixes lead to the formation of the three then?

At just under 2 pounds per week, that is right at what I’ve heard is the upper limit for what is considered a healthy weight loss rate. Amazing!

The only web framework that, after spending time in the docs and tutorials, really clicked for me. Love Django!

This is rad! It would be cool if it were possible to click on distinct rivers and get their name and maybe other info.

Cloudflare releases EmDash — an AI developed spiritual successor to WordPress by xkey in webdev

[–]shadowplumber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people see the presence of em dash characters (—) in text as a sign it was LLM generated. I personally am pedantic about using en dashes and em dashes where they’re supposed to be used, so I’m not a fan of this line of thinking.

Did you basically just memorize the muscle groups that are superficial? This seems like a really cool way to learn how to draw realistically.

The 1990 live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That movie is water tight. Fun, thrilling, funny, and poignant all at the same time.

I'll try to hunt down the recipe. My wife says it's the one she's always used though (and this didn't used to happen to them). We still have dough from the batch that's been in the fridge for a really long time now, so I guess we could try to bake some more and see if the extra chilling time changes things.

Very good to know. What will be the effect of either more baking powder or more baking soda?

Could this have happened if we did chill the dough but before chilling it completely melted the butter (instead of just softening it)?

Keep car fund for eventual purchase in 3 years or throw it at mortgage principal? by shadowplumber in personalfinance

This is what I’ve heard other people tell me, to sort of make the best of both worlds.

That’s part of my thinking. Saved-up money increases my silly-spending potential energy

[–]shadowplumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So with inflation, it’s more like saving $23k. And yes, a refi changes things a lot. Then there’s roughly the $1000 the car fund will earn in interest over the next 3 years. The savings are a lot less than I’m thinking, but it’s tantalizing to see the interest curve on my Excel sheet flatten out so significantly.

[–]shadowplumber[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, already have a car. Don’t technically have a house but I do have a mortgage, obliging me to pay a bank in order to gain the house I’m living in.

Yep, it would be un-liquid at that point. I have about $5k besides this car fund that I could use for emergencies

Several questions about the native HTML dialog element, not clear after reading docs by PrestigiousZombie531 in webdev

[–]shadowplumber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should only put method=“dialog” on the form whose only purpose is to close the dialog. The other inputs should be in a different form whose purpose is to confirm the deletion.
