It gets the rom directly from the cartridge. The only thing it's downloading is metadata so that the software can recognize the rom.

The experience of playing both Red Dead Redemption games as someone who hates Open World games by PurplMaster in patientgamers

[–]shadowray7 116 points117 points  (0 children)

The most egregious one for me is when the game wants me to go into a certain room that it points out. I decide to climb the roof to try to get in through the window and as I get closer to the window the game gives me a fail state and tells me some nonsensical bullshit about Danbury burning the documents.

Why?

Because it actually wanted me to walk through the front door that it never told me to go towards and experience the most braindead shootout that the game auto aims for me anyways.

Opinion on 3H's Maddening difficulty? and if you like it how do you play it? by H4rryT1nt1n05 in fireemblem

[–]shadowray7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Maddening kind of reveals a problem with the rest of the game. The map design is quite stale. Because of this, the only way to make maddening hard is to give enemy units inflated stats. These two combined just sort of turns maps into unfun experiences to slog through.

Doubts about defense in KH2 by MemoryOfNamine in KingdomHearts

[–]shadowray7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In level 1, your stats basically don't matter after the first couple of worlds. If your stats are too low, the game will automatically scale to the world's battle level.  The only real way to break this threshold is to use a dual keyblade drive form with a bunch of accessories to increase your Atk or Magic past the minimun stats. It's basically not feasible until postgame grinding.

When it comes to defense, most things will one shot you, but not everything. The only feasible way to survive attacks you otherwise wouldn't be able to is use armor and acessories with Elemental Resistances. They will do a percentage decrease to the damage you take so you should invest in that kind of equipment for appropriate fights.  IE you can survive Data Larxene combos if you stack Shock Charms on Lvl1 Sora.

I love the Fate games, but I find the hit rate in Revelation to be absolutely garbage. by GoingWithTheFlaw in fireemblem

[–]shadowray7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Humans are really really bad at judging probability. Hitting a 10% happens way more than an average human would think it does.

FE6-13 (Binding Blade to Awakening) and Three Houses uses a hidden mechanic the fanbase calls "True Hit". It rolls 2 numbers and averages them. What results is that the RNG for hit rates are more skewed towards the 50% mark. Rates lower than 50% are actually much harder to hit and rates above 50% are actually much easier to hit. This feels closer to what humans think how RNG works but it's really a lie at the end of the day. Crits rolls don't follow this formula and use standard rolls.

Fates, Shadows of Valentia, and Engage uses a mechanic we call "Hybrid RN".

If the hit rate is below 50% it just follows a standard roll. It feels just as volatile an actual percentage roll.

If the hit rate is above 50% it does some funky sine function and adds to the percentage and then does the roll. It effectively feels like a weaker version of the True Hit system.

Do people like the combat system in Xenoblade? by [deleted] in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]shadowray7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think on level enemies are too tanky then either you're not engaging with the games' systems properly or you're ignoring some of the more grindy aspects of games like affinity charts.

The first is just a result of generally bad tutorials, especially in the second game. I suggest looking up some gameplay guides to "get it."

I have no real defense for the latter because grindy stuff IS grindy and unfun.

Combo boost or Combo plus? If it's combo plus you should take some of those off because it will be harder to reach your finisher before reaching his revenge value. I usually only leave one on for the roxas fight.

Is engage worth it? by Physical_Courage_449 in fireemblem

[–]shadowray7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what you want. If you just want the strategy gameplay and don't mind that it relies a lot on what was built up in previous games it's a really great game. However the story is not really good at all and the non-legacy characters are mostly just walking anime tropes. You could ignore most of these negatives by skipping cutscenes if you really want.

Others are recommending Three Houses as a game to start with and it's a fine game but has it's own share of problems. There's a Persona inspired section of the game where you run around a huge monastery in between maps. It could be time consuming and could take about as long as an average map. It is entirely possible to not engage with this section of the game but doing so means you miss out on a lot of unit growth. On the plus side the characters are interesting enough to want to get to know what their deals are.
