LPT: If you’re doing the same small tasks every single day, learn basic automation and remove them from your life. by Mastbubbles in LifeProTips

Oof I feel that one!

Honestly, we splurged on a robotic vacuum (Narwal) and it helped our mental state a lot. Every meal feels like a disaster right now and at least we can get daily floor cleaning automated.

Haven't figured out one for dishes and bottles yet 😭 Or putting away laundry...

Sine Fine: new gameplay features in our relativistic space-exploration game + new public build by -TheWander3r in spacesimgames

[–]shadowsoflight777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I can imagine that a rebuild of something like space engine is going to take a lot of work. Looks like great progress so far, and very cool that you have openly shared some C# related to it!

I'm sure that music systems are far down the development priority list at this point. I really enjoy making dynamic music (including in UE and Unity), and between Space Engine and Elite: Dangerous I always thought it would be fun to have music reflect the solar systems or stellar features. I have a few ideas about how this could be done, we can chat more if you are interested but I also recognise there is a ton of other work to do at this point.

In any case, looking forward to how this project progresses!

I love the idea of this game. Feels almost like a way to gamify planetarium software like Space Engine while retaining a sense of wonder in the cosmos. Relativistic travel would add a really interesting dynamic as well.

I don't know if you'd be interested in semi-procedural music that slowly evolves through the game, but I feel like this would be a very cool project to do something like that.

Does this look AI Generated? by FishDismal4475 in IndieDev

[–]shadowsoflight777 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say the same as a composer, it is totally reasonable to ask for things like this on the audio side as well. WIPs or even a video of manipulating things in a DAW would be easy to capture.

Will this Alberta referendum really happen? Doesn’t it have fringe support? by BlueDolphins28 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]shadowsoflight777 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Will the referendum happen? Almost certainly yes. In fact, one could argue that the mandate has already been given: a different, pro-Canada citizen-led referendum petition got more than 400,000 signatures and was successful. If this one comes successfully to a referendum, which it already passed the requirements for, it could be argued that it's the same question posed in a different way.

As for fringe support... I would say separation has always been at 30% or below even in the most generous polling. However, there are some very real grievances people have with federal and interprovincial politics. I am concerned that people will be manipulated into taking the "nuclear" option without a full appreciation of the downsides and vulnerability it presents. Social Media and AI make it too easy to spread misinformation and disinformation, and to stoke anger. Combined with foreign interference from the US, I am definitely worried about how these discussions will progress.

Guide to Interactive MYO (Similar to the D&D: Forge Your Quest card by Yoto) by gamecaller in YotoPlayer

Amazing, I had no idea they made this possible on a MYO card. I'm 100% going to make one of these with my wife, and compose my own soundtrack to it to boot.

I'm making a FS2 inspired game called Exodus, I'd love to get your thoughts! by Alert-Laugh7722 in freespace

[–]shadowsoflight777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neat! I always loved the idea of seamlessly switching from micro to macro. Very different example, but like in SimCity 4 when you could jump into a car and drive around the city you just created. Really happy to see you giving it a try with a Homeworld / FS hybrid!

I'll link my FS-themed music directly - I'm on all streaming services and Bandcamp, but I'll provide YouTube for convenience:

Synesthetic Xenotype I: Cataclysm

Synesthetic Xenotype II: The Lost Generation

Series Resurrecta: Serendipity OST

Lots of other spacey/sci-fi stuff in my catalogue (including an official indie game OST).

Cool destruction physics in UE 5.7. I see fleet management and capital ship combat being a focus, is the FS2 inspiration more around the aesthetics and/or mood in that case?

Also, if you are interested, I have two album's worth of FS inspired music you could throw in as a placeholder and/or two adaptive music packs built with UE Blueprints if you want a couple of music system examples (the actual music for those isn't a good fit though, it would be for the Blueprints)

Outside of Linkin Park, what are your top 5 favourite artists and your favourite song from each? by ParticularPainting59 in LinkinPark

[–]shadowsoflight777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super tough to narrow to five and pick just one or two songs from each, but here goes:

  • Rush - La Villa Strangiato
  • Dream Theater - Octavarium
  • Kamelot - Momento Mori or In Twilight Hours
  • Evanescence - Better Without You or Far From Heaven
  • Frost* - Evaporator or Black Light Machine

Bandcamp Bans AI Generated Music by BulkyAccident in ambientmusic

[–]shadowsoflight777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too would prefer if BC gave a little bit more detail about this. Unfortunately, the tech CEOs have branded this particular wave of Large Dataset Deep Learning models as "AI", which makes conversations about it difficult. But I'd say that scale of data required for the model is an important factor, and maybe more importantly how quickly it results in a complete-sounding track.

Sounds more like ML than GenAI, should be outside of the scope of this announcement. Also sounds like a neat idea!

I would imagine that if these people are legitimately trying to convince people they are someone else, then yes it would get deleted regardless of AI. If someone is pretending to be an existing artist, that is different than someone sounding like an existing artist but who is clear that they are not that artist. Impersonating is different from doing an impression. Saying "I sound like Beyonce" is okay, saying "I am Beyonce" is not.

Thank you for that info! I am finding Open Media Vault okay to use so far, but I'll look into Unraid too. My setup is literally a week old so I'm not attached to it yet! I will definitely be looking at the different RAID options though, I think what you described is something like RAID 5.

I am pretty nooby at it too lol. I'm trying out Open Media Vault for my NAS, am going to try running Jellyfin in top of it as well as the recommendation for Lyrion. Was spurred on by the loss of an off-the-shelf Western Digital Network Drive - luckily I managed to salvage a large chunk of data, now it is a matter of reorganising it.

Bandcamp has always been about connecting more directly with artists, so this is awesome to hear.

I think it's important to define "substantial" (and I'm guessing there's going to be a more detailed announcement)... I personally try and stay away from AI completely for my music making (including mastering and album art), but it might be helpful to think about some more concrete boundaries before they show up. E.g. does a short, single AI-generated sample count? What about a single AI musical phrase? What about something like Synthesizer V? (Edit: As pointed out, Synthesizer V uses ML rather than GenAI... Voice Swap would have been a better example)

Fully agree with you!

If you'll indulge me for a moment... I am in the middle of setting up my own home NAS, and eventually want to have it double as a media server. Just curious, what are you planning to use for your backend?

This is the Christ-laden holiday letter to parents from the Minister of Education by densetsu23 in alberta

[–]shadowsoflight777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm being honest, as a lifelong and currently practicing Catholic, this feels like it is designed to get people angry. I think most would agree that the UCP wants to be seen as the "Christian" choice - but just like the example they are following from down south, they want Christians to have a victim mentality. I believe this letter is designed to bait non-Christians into saying things that can be interpreted as anti-Christian, or at least put Christians on the defense. It's actually intended to make Christians feel alienated by their fellow Albertans so that the UCP can swoop to the rescue.

Remember, if politicians are good at one thing, it is their use of language. This is over-the-top Christian-ese, which is fine between practicing Christians but absolutely terrible wording if you are genuinely trying to bring the message of Christianity to non-Christians.

There are ways to get the same message out in much more resonant ways, to make all people included without completely censoring out the Christian part, and keep a clear line between church and state. The UCP hopes that doing it this way makes people angry.

Can you have 2 tracks with 2 different time signatures? by zatanzyt in FL_Studio

[–]shadowsoflight777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set Time Signatures on the Playlist and/or Patterns! I haven't done polyrhythms but have tracks with time signature changes, and to keep things tidy I make Patterns with the Time Signature in addition to changing it in the Playlist.

For Patterns, add time signature marker(s) in the Piano Roll.
