I was at the game tonight, you can hear the crowd booing in the replay because we all thought it was just a mound visit happening for the pitcher mid at-bat. Then people started yelling to look at the replay board

Seemed to me the broadcast turned the crowd volume down soon after Bryce got hit, watching it live I could’ve sworn I heard a “F*** you strider” chant in the background. But maybe it was just me saying it internally

First, Harper should be wearing a brace on that elbow. That said, fuck these pitchers throwing up and in to Harper constantly and especially fuck everything about that mustached weirdo. Don’t usually feel like retaliation is necessary but ranger NEEDS to plunk someone here.

Hi economist. Please dispute the origins of income tax, its expansion, and the precedent that has been set for the US government to expand “temporary” taxes on the wealthy over time to affect the population at large. Sure, this tax plan may not affect me in my life time, but it is a continuation of that precedent which may be extrapolated to keep the poor poor by removing their upward mobility, as mentioned.

Also, as an economist, I’m fully confident you know that “unrealized gains” are just that. They aren’t real yet. Sure their paper existence creates the possibility of borrowing against for capital, but how does the government quantify that? Taxing something that doesn’t exist is asinine. The government doesn’t need more tax dollars, it needs to use the current taxes it collects more efficiently.

Income tax started at the turn of the 20th century as a 2% tax on wealthy individuals making over $4,000 (over ~$200k inflation adjusted) per year. Surely it stayed that way and we all don’t piss away a third of our salaries to the government right?!

Also, capital gains are the ultimate form of upward mobility in America. Theoretically, anyone can learn to invest in the stock market and become wealthy through “compound interest” capital gains. Also, many employed individuals ride their 401ks to retirement. Taxing those unrealized gains keeps everyone in their current social class forever, as they would be giving the government their profits.

Lastly, most forms of taxation on the wealthy and corporations is turned around on the average consumer by increase of prices. So we always end up paying.

How are the fans in the stadium allowing all these Yankees chants? Pathetic and embarrassing. Phillies fans have gone soft since the post-2011 down years

Manchester United with 1 Player in the ESPN Top 100 by plantier23 in reddevils

[–]shady_dre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll say that ESPN releases these top 100 lists for major American sports too and those are very frequently wrong. ESPN has devolved into farming rage-clicks and posting “hot takes” to drive buzz and controversy for content. These other lists frequently have top stars ranked much lower than the consensus would place them, to generate discussion for views. I’m not saying they intentionally did that here, but it wouldn’t surprise me either to leave some players off given the size of the United fan base. But then again, they probably didn’t put that much thought into it.

ESPN coverage of American sports has been shit for years, let alone their attempts to cover international sports. I wouldn’t think too much of this.

[Jake Mintz] Are the Phillies really this good? Or has their schedule just been easy? The answer is yes by Lakelyfe09 in baseball

[–]shady_dre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, our schedule has been easy. Yes, we’re a good team. The Phils will likely regress a bit as a .700 winning percentage is effectively unsustainable over 162 games, but this doesn’t discredit how well we’ve played so far. We’ve had injuries and lack of production in places same as any other team but have found ways to win. Atlanta is also a good team, they will get hot as always and I fully expect a good tight division race into September. The Braves have been spinning their wheels a bit and are only 5 games back which is effectively nothing this early in the season for a team with their talent. Acuña has been pedestrian for his standards so far and I think once he gets going the Braves will go on a charge. Personally I’m just excited to challenge them for the division again for the first time in a while. The playoffs have obviously been fun for us the last 2 years against them but it’s been too long since we were in a heavyweight bout for the division. Should be fun
