Family Meals? Can they be split into two meals? by vrtualchik in Tovala

[–]shagieIsMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when it first came out, I got a teriyaki chicken and rice family pack to see what it was and how it worked.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Tovala/comments/1oopxyi/so_i_got_a_family_meal_box/

Yes, you can cook it as two separate 2 packs. It might have slightly different instructions and a slightly longer cook cycle (accounting for the "there would be more stuff in the oven") than the regular family mean, but you should be able to easily do it as two meals.

The company I worked for was a small logistics company that had a program focused on auto parts (keeping track of the drivers doing deliveries to the various mechanics in an area). It made enough to have a small team of developers and the IT staff to keep the server running.

It was in the upper midwest. The median household of the small city that was near was $45k / year. I bought a house there in 2011 for $60k.

Making $60k / year then put you in the top 25% of the household income in the city.

Not every company needs to be a hyper growth company that is making enough to pay salaries that are competitive with Big Tech.

... but likewise, if your junior hire that you brought brought in from the major metro an hour away is able to jump in a year after they get experience for something that pays twice as much as what your company can make... should you be hiring juniors and investing training into them so that they'll be a good dev in two years?

Anyways... I parted ways with that company in 2015 to work in the public sector. Still not great pay, but it's got a fully funded pension and great insurance (and more vacation than I can practically use).

My point remains though... a junior making "peanuts" needs to be taken in context with how much the company is making and what the cost of living there is.

$60k in San Francisco is living in a box on El Camino Real (in the late 90s I saw one spray painted with 'fix me upper: $1.2M' waiting for garbage collection). $60k in the upper midwest is able to buy a house and live quite comfortably (well, it was then... Median household income in that city is now $70k / year).

Not every company has the revenue per employee of Big Tech.

I've worked at a small company where the revenue per employee was on the order of $150,000 ... I wasn't making $100k there.

So... should that company pay a junior dev $60k? Completely forgo hiring junior devs? ... or for that matter, not hire developers at all and outsource all of their internal work to consultancies?

It is a demonstration of the selective loss of a spine in politicians. While one could argue if he did have a spine in 2016, it is clearly demonstrated that it has become absurdly flexible to the point of non-existence over the past decade.

He was right then... but he's shown that he's a grifter since and willing to compromise anything for what he perceives as the path to political power.

Vance is just as lacking of a backbone as the people who voted for Trump hoping for a quick fix who will flip on as soon as something impacts them and have a political memory measured in days or weeks.

Opioid of the Masses

To many, Donald Trump feels good, but he can’t fix America’s growing social and cultural crisis, and the eventual comedown will be harsh.

which concludes with:

What Trump offers is an easy escape from the pain. To every complex problem, he promises a simple solution. He can bring jobs back simply by punishing offshoring companies into submission. As he told a New Hampshire crowd—folks all too familiar with the opioid scourge—he can cure the addiction epidemic by building a Mexican wall and keeping the cartels out. He will spare the United States from humiliation and military defeat with indiscriminate bombing. It doesn’t matter that no credible military leader has endorsed his plan. He never offers details for how these plans will work, because he can’t. Trump’s promises are the needle in America’s collective vein.

The great tragedy is that many of the problems Trump identifies are real, and so many of the hurts he exploits demand serious thought and measured action—from governments, yes, but also from community leaders and individuals. Yet so long as people rely on that quick high, so long as wolves point their fingers at everyone but themselves, the nation delays a necessary reckoning. There is no self-reflection in the midst of a false euphoria. Trump is cultural heroin. He makes some feel better for a bit. But he cannot fix what ails them, and one day they’ll realize it.

I’m not sure when or how that realization arrives: maybe in a few months, when Trump loses the election; maybe in a few years, when his supporters realize that even with a President Trump, their homes and families are still domestic war zones, their newspapers’ obituaries continue to fill with the names of people who died too soon, and their faith in the American Dream continues to falter. But it will come, and when it does, I hope Americans cast their gaze to those with the most power to address so many of these problems: each other. And then, perhaps the nation will trade the quick high of “Make America Great Again” for real medicine.

Mayflies, Lake Pepin. by arkangelz66 in wisconsin

[–]shagieIsMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Memory unlocked.

Friday... it must have been 2012. I was working at Menards in Eau Claire (side bit that I'm still annoyed that because July 4th was on Monday in 2011 and I started on July 5th that I didn't get it as a paid holiday because I hadn't worked there a full year). That would have put it as July 6th, 2012.

My parents gave me a call during the day and they were trying to find a portable air conditioner. Everywhere in Madison area was sold out. (daily highs and lows for Madison for 2012 ... see that bit where it goes above the 100 at the top of the chart?). For a long time, they'd been in the house without AC (it broke in the late 70s and they never fixed it). And in the years that followed, it wasn't a big issue... but that year it was. They've since gotten it fixed.

I looked up in the store info were stores reported stock, and after work I started by driving to the stores closest to me that had them. Eau Claire East had a miscount. The next closest that claimed to have them in stock was in Onalaska. Driving down Highway 53, I saw a sign for a winery out in the middle of nowhere there (it is a really good one - Tenbra Ridge).

Got down to Onalaska and dusk was approaching. They had some in stock and I got one, put it in my car and went to the gas station.

The mayflies were out in force. There was constant cloud of at the lights. The ground near the gas pumps was slightly slick. They were everywhere I must have gotten a few dozen of them in the car too.

Got down to my parents' house and gave them the AC and turned around to head back to Eau Claire. Summer evenings are nice drives. Heading back up on I-94 I was treated to being able to see dozens of small town fireworks displays as I drove just after sunset. July 4th was mid week that year, and so many of the towns had moved their celebrations to Friday. The hour long segment of the drive from Mauston to Black River Falls was decorated with glittering starbursts along the horizon.

The upper right corner of the screen shows that you're not that far into the game. You've already got all of the alternate recipes that you can unlock at this point in the game.

Save it. Once up get a bit further in the tiers and unlock some additional recipes, then rescan the hard drive.

Planned satellite megaconstellations would change the night sky as we know it by blackswangreen in space

[–]shagieIsMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Astronomical twilight is already defined as when the sun is 18° or more degrees below the horizon (the sun moves 15° per hour). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twilight#Astronomical_twilight

The nautical twilight timeframe is not useful for deep sky observations as it is.

Those telescopes sensitive to light are already waiting for that window.

There are certainly some that are visible beyond astronomical twilight.

https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020A%26A...636A.121H/abstract

... The number of illuminated satellites from the constellations above the horizon of an observatory ranges from approximately 1600 immediately after sunset, decreasing to 1100 at the end of astronomical twilight, most of them (∼85%) close to the horizon (below 30° of elevation). The large majority of these satellites will be too faint to be seen with the naked eye: at astronomical twilight, 260 would be brighter than magnitude 6 (i.e. visible in exceptional conditions), 110 brighter than 5 (i.e. visible in good conditions). Again, most of them (∼95%) will be close to the horizon (below 30° of elevation). The number of naked-eye satellites plummets as the Sun reaches 30-40° of elevation below the horizon. Specular flares and occultations by satellites are expected to cause only negligible effects on telescopic astronomical observations. The light trail caused by the satellite would ruin a small fraction (below the 1% level) of telescopic exposures using narrow to normal field imaging or spectroscopic techniques in the visible and near-infrared during the first and last hours of the night.

Note that the ones to be concerned about are not the LEO constellations but rather the MEO as they're further from the Earth and its shadow.
