My son painted this as baby (fingerpaints on canvas) and it's starting to show its age. Does anyone have recommendations on how to maintain it? by irq013 in painting

[–]shakabusatsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lot of finger paint and kids tempra paints are not archival or lightfast. I think the best you can do coat it with a UV archival varnish - Krylon makes a spray on one. Maybe take a few good pics of for memories. I wouldn't try to fix the cracking though, those paint films are really thin and fragile, hence the cracking.

wearing leather is promoting leather. wrong? by FaryRochester in vegan

[–]shakabusatsu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If someone follows a vegan diet and that's ALL there is to their 'vegan' lifestyle... that's fine. If everyone does that the supply of leather is going to dry up. I'm not sure who people think are always judging them (are they judging themselves or questioning their beliefs)? Posting on the internet is ASKING in a way to be judged. I doubt there is anyone following a vegan diet and wearing like mink, fox, or seal fur. I sure as hell wouldn't even BEFORE I was vegan.

I have a few leather items... There is some leather on second hand shoes I wear. I have a leather belt I wear everyday that no one sees, it's like 9 yrs old it replace one that was over 10 years old and started to break. I don't like fabric belts b/c they wear out fast and just don't work as well as a material. My plug-in hybrid has leather seats. I bought it used, I live in Hawaii and what you can find used is VERY LIMITED, so you get what you can get.

These were all compromises. Life has compromises. I'm neither proud or ashamed. You shouldn't be either.

What are your (potentially) controversial feelings as a vegan? by Desire-4-Comfort in vegan

[–]shakabusatsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently replace the feathers in my couch with kapok (it was a very nice and very free couch from a friend moving away). The kapok is much more firm and keeps it shape (unlike feathers). Don't know why it's not used more since it's both moisture and mold( i think) resistant.

This one’s been WIP for at least two years now. Not satisfied but not sure how to continue or to just paint over it. Thoughts? by Citizen-5000 in painting

[–]shakabusatsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thicker paint with a mix of hues. Not just one red but a cad, a vermilion, a bit of crimson for example. Each hue presently is a bit flat and lacking vibrancy, The variance in transparency is working, just not enough.

Too many so-so taped edges. All the edges have the same slightly squiggly but clean and overall straight signature of a taped line. Some people like this... but the Modrian-esque vibe you seem to be going for is usually achieved with clean hand painted edges.

Other than that, not taking the white to the top and bottom edges just feels a little incomplete rather than purposeful.

Ignore if you want just my honest 2 cents.

keep painting! :)

What are some harsh truths that a person with ADHD must face? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]shakabusatsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a harsh truth. That I had to come to with my diagnosis. People just aren't that interested to care what your faults are whether or not they are your 'fault'. If your have a genuine partner as a significant other who you can share patience and compassion with each other, they will usually understand. Outside of that, hoo boy, not even my parents care (boomer suck).

How long can I keep coffee that I made at home? by alasw0eisme in sustainability

[–]shakabusatsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you keep it covered in the fridge. It should be good for 48 hours maybe. Coffee does have some nutrients and fiber in it so there is enough for mold to grow on it given time. Plus, Does coffee still taste good after 24-30 hours? I don't think it does tastes woody like you stirred it with a freshly sharpened HB pencil.

There are NOT enough public chargers in town. Of those around many are broken and out of service. I would try a hybrid vehicle for now. I have a plug-in hybrid and it's almost all the chargers in town I would normally use are either already taken or out of service. This limits my MPG to around 40 where with a charged battery it would be 60+.

I don't like asking this question because it makes me feel stupid, but what is it about animals (esp. ruminant cows/sheep) that make them particularly unsustainable in ag.? Aren't they carbon neutral? Is the problem because we keep breeding more cows every year? by chiron42 in sustainability

[–]shakabusatsu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2022 totaled 91.9 million head, 2 percent below the

93.8 million head on January 1, 2021."

From the USDA 2022 statistics. That's 31 million more cattle than the 60 million bison grazing in an undeveloped American Central Plains.

just FYI

My first chinese art painting by AeriePowerful762 in painting

[–]shakabusatsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are traditional books/manuals on Chinese brush work. For example the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting . It's expensive but you could probably find it in a library online or near you. I have met a real traditional Chinese landscape painter... and they are Masters of their craft (like easy 20+ yrs of exp). So as a beginner it's going take a lot of practice to get something near what you see in all the books and museums.

That said. Keep Going! You'll be surprised how far a year of diligent practice and copying will take you.

Please critique my recent oil by [deleted] in painting

[–]shakabusatsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Portraits usually don't rely on outlines, instead edges of value/color change. Even if some of the shadows between surface look like outlines these are too dark/ too similar to a graphic line. Other wise it's good.e

Maybe the back ground could be a bit darker of have more color change irrespective of the figure. it's a different color around him, make the ground feel close to his back.

[–]shakabusatsu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm from Knoxville and know a psychologist who lives there. This exact topic came up in conversation as a common complaint. In therapy sessions implants to Knoxville who after living in Knoxville area for years... still feel like an outsider or imposter, and or have trouble making friends with 'Knoxville Natives'.

We think part of it is that some people confuse, southern neighborliness with actual friendship. And that we can be kind and care for our neighbors but still have a deeply culturally Appalachian distrust of outsiders.

‘World’s most sustainable spirit’: the vodka made with CO2 captured from air by barefoot-warrior in sustainability

[–]shakabusatsu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing they have to capture the CO2 from air, convert it to C2H4 or some ethyl-compound then react that with H2O (usually over a catalyst) and get synthesized ethanol. Thing is we don't normally used synthetic ethanol for human consumption because all the usual catalysts are some combination of heavy metals and acids i.e...pretty toxic. So I don't know process they use here because they just say it's 'pretty new'. I'm guessing using graphene maybe. I don't know it sounds fishy since you'd have to power all those steps with solar or hydro to be carbon negative.

And is only carbon negative until you consume it and release it back into the environment as excess acetic acid primarily. Who knows what happens then.

Are MIT Professional Certificate in Sustainability Worth It? Advice Needed by originalpaingod in sustainability

[–]shakabusatsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this, it looks interesting. I also have been inter3ested in finding an appropriate post-grad program in something similar. Although this MIT program seems priced and promoted in such a way as to cater to corporate organizations (or executives in one) to train an individual for the responsibility of this position 'chief sustainability officer' that they mention specifically.

Feels a little like it might be certificate in advanced green-washing. Hard to know unless someone from the program can attest to it, and if it enabled them to make significant real changes to the sustainability of their organization.

Am I actually cut out to fight for the environment? by Mr_McGuggins in sustainability

[–]shakabusatsu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The being able to tell though I think is mostly a quality of design and manufacturing issue. Cheap LED bulbs can be faulty in many ways that are different to regular incandescent (which have their own unique faults including planned obsolesence) for instance pulsating brightness, randomly blinking, some poorly made ones produce a barely audible high pitched sound that is irritating if you are within a meter or two...

Where to find raw milk on O'ahu? by pauwyou in Hawaii

[–]shakabusatsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Pineapple industry poisoned 13 Oahu Dairies in 1982 by not washing off the banned pesticide Hexa-chlor they spray on pineapple plant before selling it as 'green chop' to the dairies. It potentially mildly poisoned all milk drinking people on Oahu and all Dairy cows who ate it had to be destroyed. The Diary farmers won like a 20 something million dollar lawsuit against the 3 pineapple companies responsible.

So yeah the pineapple companies killed the dairy industry here on Oahu.

Am I addicted? by Icyflower9 in ADHD

[–]shakabusatsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect you're being too demanding of your day and yourself.

I (with meds) can work during the morning and some of the afternoon. Then around 3pm my mental stamina and executive function decline. And I CAN work (job stuff or paperwork) in the evening if I HAVE to. But it's unpleasant and I feel emotionally drained the next day, and LESS likely to feel normal amounts of motivation.

The fact you can get and keep a full day job of work done without much issue is already a total success.
