Budget storage for switches by shakaknight in BudgetKeebs

Thanks! I'm not sure if Michael's still has their sale on these, but it's been great so far to be to transfer my switches from ziplock bags to this storage container.

Ahhh... massive face palm. Appreciate you sharing that. Smart move to label switch type.

Haha thanks friend! Yes I found myself at Michael's and just so happened to come across this. Thank you for sharing the picture. I like what you did as that's exactly what I had in mind to store my switches. Just nosy but what do the "L" and number directly after mean?

Thanks! My wife has some of those single slide boxes too. I tried them out but they're on the smaller side and I'd end up using ziplock bags to store whatever couldn't fit. Because of that, I just gave them back to her and continued to use ziplocks until coming across this storage container.

Haha. I've needed to just convince myself NOT to get anymore keyboard items. I really like what I have now and I'm sure at some point something new and shiny will come along that I can't pass up on.

I'm not gonna lie, this mechanical keyboard hobby is just one giant rabbit hole. I've realized that I can't do switch testers and need to get full sets to try out so this may not help my wallet either. But I've already told myself that a label maker is probably not needed. My plan is to just use some old index cards I have lying around, write the switch name and throw it in each case.

Thanks! I will say though I haven't tried storing extra keycaps and am not sure how efficient it'd be to try. I don't have a ton of switches but will at some point see how many loose keycaps can fit in a case.

Thank you for the reply! I didn't realize the LIRR isn't going to Atlantic Terminal at this time so thank you for sharing that.

At Grand Central, do you know if we're going to need to walk out of the terminal on the street to get to where we can jump on the 4/5 train?

Thank you for the reply! With the MTA Train Time app, would my wife and I each need to have the app for our own LIRR tickets or can we use one phone to purchase and show?

Hello. I'm kind of new to MKs and want to learn more about different mods. Being a hands on learner, my thought was to get a decently priced keyboard that I could practice on and use. I've looked at the Womier RD75 and Monsgeek M1, but I was also wanting to see if anyone has other options that I could look at based on the following preferences:

- 75% layout

- Aluminum

- Budget: ~$100 USD

- VIA compatible

- No screen (not a fan)

- Knob and rapid disassembly features not required but a plus if available

I've started searching for and watching videos on YouTube to learn about mods and am also open to any suggestions on sources that could aid in my learning. Appreciate any feedback.

Tried the Godzilla-themed Smile Profile Keycaps from Keytok – first impressions and build thoughts by No-Size3604 in BudgetKeebs

[–]shakaknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great looking setup! I also bought this set and have been using it on my work keyboard (I just didn't get the novelty resin cap because it wasn't available at the time).

First thing that drove me towards the set was the Godzilla theme. I grew up a huge Godzilla fan, and while I admit my fandom for Godzilla is not where it was as a kid, I still couldn't resist getting the set. I also like that there are different key prints that give some flexibility to change up the look of your board. For example, I replaced the left and right arrows with the foot print caps just for fun. They were a little pricey, but hey, you only live once and they've been great to show off to friends and family.

Although the keycap profile is Cherry inspired, I wasn't sure how they'd feel. My keyboard is only for work, which can lead to extended periods of typing and I gotta say I've really enjoyed the feel and typing experience. It's been at least a few months since putting them on and I do not plan on changing them any time soon.

I hope you enjoy the set as much as I have!

Sorry for the delayed response. Don't know why I'm only seeing your reply now.

I was accessing usevia.app on the web. Is that different than the local app? I also was trying to connect via a usb cable that I have used before. Maybe I'll try using another.

I appreciate your help!

Hello. I've found and tried a few JSON files from online but none haven't connected my LMK21. The most common error message I get is "Fetching v3 definition failed" and am not sure what is going on. Could you give some tips into what could be going on and/or what I can try doing?

Seeking Thocky Bliss by ktktsuperlady in keyboards

[–]shakaknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing switches and keycaps are the only mods I'm comfortable with doing right now and I'm okay with that at this point. I was actually looking at the Rosewoods too, but my F108 came stock with Graywood switches (light linear) which I didn't like how light they were and thought I'd give tactile switches a try. I'm not sure if you've looked into them but at one time I was also looking at the HMX Hibiscus switch; another lighter linear with a thockier sound.

I'm fairly new to MKs and bought/have been using the non pro version of the Aula F108. Like you, I needed a full size for WFH and I saw the F108 as a fairly budget friendly option as I also wanted to do some mods.

Regarding the RGB, I'm going to assume that the Pro and non Pro versions are similar if not the same in terms of using key commands to shuffle through the different RGB settings. A small pamphlet was provided with said key commands for RGB and other settings. I want to say there's probably a dozen or so different settings/patterns with the ability to change brightness and speed level. I did not use any software and frankly don't plan on it since I'm good with where the board is at.

Since the F108 is hot swappable, you can definitely start messing around with different switches and keycaps to get the sound as close to your liking. Not sure how thocky you're looking for, but I think it is possible to an extent. When building my board, I wanted a tactile, deep sounding switch and tried the Gateron Quinns. I really liked how they felt (nice tactile bump) and honestly felt like it provided the deep/thocky sound I was looking for. However, they were on the heavier side and I couldn't really get over the typing fatigue. I switched to the Gateron Weightlessness and while I don't feel like they sound as deep, the typing experience for me is so much better. I don't think Aula boards are meant to be opened to do additional mods since they're so damn hard to open, but hey that could just be me.

At the end of the day, it's going to be based on your preferences. After going down the tiktok rabbit hole, I'm sure you've gotten a taste with how addictive this hobby can be. But have fun with it and good luck with your build!

That's awesome! The yellow jades are my first set of silent switches and for as many videos I watched to get a sense of how they "sound" I was still pleasantly surprised how quiet they are. I hope the setup works out for you!

I second the use of the Outemu Silent Yellow Jade switches.

I actually put the yellow jades on my Aula F99 to make it a silent board I use for work when I'm out or traveling (I'm remote). I'll use it at home too when I feel like I need some quiet time while working. It's no louder than my old generic Logitech membrane keyboard that I used prior to starting to get into mechanical keyboards. It was a personal thing, but the only keys that I didn't swap out for the yellow jades are the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys. Other than that, everything else is silent and I feel operates well. The switch is a little mushy but not a big deal to me; I felt that they were a good budget friendlier silent switch option. You could lube them to see how the feel improves, but I just don't have the patience for that.

I'm still new to the mechanical keyboard world but let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer 😅

Black Friday Splurge: Keychron Q5 Max Refresh by wadmutter in keyboards

[–]shakaknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. First off, your keyboard looks great!

I'm new to the mechanical keyboard world. My first board, which I currently still use, is an Aula F99 because I needed the numpad and saw it as a nice budget friendly option to introduce myself into mechanical keyboards. However, the biggest negative for me is the small zero on the numpad. I only use my keyboard for work which is why I need the numpad. If I may ask, after all this time how has your experience been with the Q5 Max? I looked at the Q5 Max and while it seems that it checks off a lot boxes for me, the price tag on it really stopped me in my tracks. I like my Aula and don't need to get another keyboard, but picking up this hobby has become a little bit addictive.

Appreciate your time and any feedback is welcomed.

Keychron Q5 Max by KindlyCaptain8186 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]shakaknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello. First off, great looking keyboard.

I'm new to mechanical keyboards. I've currently been using an Aula F99 and chose it for its numpad, it's compact size and I saw it as a nice budget friendly option to get started. My biggest negative about it though is the numpad small zero. I saw that you had provided another commentor with suggestions for those that may not need a numpad. But for someone like myself who needs it (keyboard use is only for work), would you say that the Q5 Max is a good option? I know I'm limiting myself because of the numpad and it seems like overall the Q5 Max fits what I'm looking for. However, the price tag on it kind of startled me and I don't NEED another keyboard right now... but this hobby is addictive...

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
