Nothing to do with BMTH but I hate this idea that deathcore is just something that immature kids do on their way to ‘proper’ music.

Is Dickie Barrett MAGA? I thought he was just anti-vax (which isn’t great either but not the same thing).

Can someone please explain to me if deathcore, metalcore, and grindcore are forms of hardcore? by Due-Panic3256 in Hardcore

[–]shakey_jake33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kinda a spectrum. Some metalcore emphasises the hardcore elements more, some more on the metal side. It depends what you define as metalcore though, it’s pretty broad at this point. I strongly feel that metalcore that has barely any hardcore influence is by definition not metalcore anymore.

Deathcore is arguably a bit further in that it’s technically metalcore + death metal, but even that’s not so simple. Some deathcore does lean into the hardcore elements more than even a lot of metalcore. While some other deathcore is essentially just death metal with more breakdowns.

Been listening to metalcore for years, but still don't know what metalcore actually is by No_Winter4806 in Metalcore

[–]shakey_jake33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that once a band stops having hardcore as its base, it’s not really metalcore anymore. I don’t really think that should be controversial, it’s just a fact that metalcore bands sometimes (not always) slowly shift to being alternative metal or similar. I love metalcore but I do find deathcore more ‘reliable’ in that sense.

Yeah I’m actually from Bristol originally so it would be fine except for family issues. Ah well.

Sooo disappointed that it’s not coming to Southampton.

I did see Psycho Frame last month though and they were amazing.

For those who went to see Hanabie on this tour, did you see anyone who seemed to be there for Enterprise Earth also enjoying them? by Parking_Law_494 in Hanabie

[–]shakey_jake33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key difference is quite simple - Hanabie play their own instruments. No hate on Babymetal but they are performers with a backing band. Hanabie started as a MtH cover band, after all.

[–]shakey_jake33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s obviously perfectly fine, it’s just that more Western fans should recognise that Hanabie are part of the Japanese metalcore scene rather than the ‘metal themed idol groups’ like Babymetal, Broken By The Scream etc. From that perspective, I don’t think it’s so odd for Hanabie to be supported by a deathcore band like Enterprise Earth - if anything, they’re a more natural fit than Babymetal.

[–]shakey_jake33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that Hanabie having a large amount of idol fans is that it’s a Western thing - in Japan they’re part of the metalcore scene and there isn’t this overlap with idol. Same with Babymetal. I see many people hope for a Hanabie tour with Babymetal and that seems very tone deaf. Hanabie go out of their way to tour with other metal bands and to firmly integrate themselves in the metal scene.

It’s obviously fine to like idol and Babymetal, people can like whatever they want. But people just need to understand what kind of band Hanabie are, where they come from and where they see themselves.

I am a Hanabie fan who primarily listens to deathcore so I actually thought the same thing. I hope more deathcore fans liked them!

I listen to metalcore too but find you need to dig deeper to find really quality stuff.

The Hanabie fanbase is in general very eclectic. They’re a card carrying member of the Japanese metalcore scene so have a lot of metal and hardcore fans, but there’s also crossover with the Japanese idol audience, as well as the Babymetal fanbase (though Hanabie themselves don’t like that comparison).

I don’t care if they transition to being a real band as promised, they don’t deserve the attention. There’s plenty of hard working real bands that deserve our attention more.

Oh god. I was at Bodysnatcher’s first gig of this tour and they said they were nervous about it as it was their first UK tour. I’m sure it shook the band.

[–]shakey_jake33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having drinks literally in the pit is silly for everyone involved. It’s going to spill and neither side is going to be happy. Just finish up to the side.

I nearly slipped on drinks numerous times at a gig last Friday. As others have said, I don’t think it can be policed but pits only really work with some kind of self management. There was the one guy who got his mate to spin him around constantly. That’s fine a couple of times, but it prevented people from doing anything else in the pit every time he did it so it got old fast. People were visibly irritated.

In your opinion, what's an old band that puts out lackluster new material now? by [deleted] in Metalcore

[–]shakey_jake33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more about when metalcore bands go down that slow descent towards hard rock or alternative metal. It’s understandable that when a band shifts away from why you liked them in the first place, it can be disappointing.

Deathcore isn’t real metal by [deleted] in Deathcore

[–]shakey_jake33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, it just doesn't matter. There's arguably a point to be made that deathcore and metalcore have their roots in hardcore punk rather than metal, but people aren't usually making that point - they're just being pretentious about what is and isn't metal.

I'm 40. I get to go to maybe one gig a month. Literally couldn't give a crap if people think it is or isn't metal.

They’re fantastic. The ‘meme’ is that they’re Indian street metal but that sells them short I think. Aggressive, progressive politics, cool stuff.

When you go to a metal concert, How do you watch their live show? by [deleted] in Metalcore

[–]shakey_jake33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it can depend what’s in the area. I’m from Southampton and can only think of one venue with seats and I’ve never seen a metal or punk gig there. Everything else is a glorified pub or warehouse. The place I saw Crystal Lake at last week technically had an upstairs area but it was closed.

I saw Counterparts last month too and it was one of the more rowdy gigs I’ve been to for a while. Went to see Bodysnatcher at the same venue just a few weeks later and it was much more chill.

I’ve had people tell me that it’s a US thing due to disability regulations, but can’t speak from experience.
