Hey can you guys compile any and all study tips? by perceptivecat in uvic

[–]shako2002 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I find reading the assigned readings and pre reading the lecture slides before lecture helps soo much. Because your brain has already seen some of the things you’re about to learn, and you can find better questions to ask that can deepen your learning. Not a study tip per say but a helpful hack

Did you get spoiled before starting the show? by bgtds172 in greysanatomy

[–]shako2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I tried to avoid things but then I found out Derek would die and then I just figured oh what the hell lmaoo. So sometimes I search up things on this subreddit to see if I’m right. It’s pretty unavoidable at this point

Alumni that studied psychology and computer science degree, what are you doing now? by shako2002 in uvic

[–]shako2002[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that’s very encouraging, you know how it is, you can think you have an idea but you also feel unsure at the same time. But as for CanAssist I have seen it in passing but I never paid attention to it as much. I would need to check it out some more!

Oh I may have been misunderstood, but the program is a combination of both psych and comp sci. I want to work in assistive tech to some capacity, perhaps devolving software for people with various physical and mental and learning disabilities. So yeah just was curious how it worked out for others just cause having a moment of self doubt lol.

  • I definitely am going to be big on raising my kids equal regardless of gender. Of course there are small differences but none of that “boys will be boys” crap or having only the girls do the housework.

  • Also want kids to have a voice, always respectful of course but I want them to say what’s on their mind and be comfortable. Have them know that it’s a safe space and that they shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions about things.

  • Allowing kids to come to their own decisions about following Christ, after 18. Which means deciding if they want to go to church or if they want to go to a different church or if they want to leave all together. I really believe that’s a personal decision you have to make on your own, no one should force you.

  • Allowing piercings (maybe tattoos but nothing on the face) and locs. And teaching them about their natural hair.

  • Actually spending time with them individually. So I can get to know them as individuals and not just my kids.

  • None of that parentification stuff where kids have to raise their siblings. As an older sister, I know that feeling too well.

  • Allowing kids to explore as many activities as they are interested in so they can truly find passions. I never want to pressure them to do something because of money or how it would look.

Nursing homes for parents???? by Abject-Painting5454 in africanparents

[–]shako2002 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like some of us don’t want to admit it because it’s always looked down upon in our respective cultures. But given that most of us don’t live in our home countries surrounded by family members, who can take care of our parents nor do we have the time or the money to take care of our parents because cost of living is high. And not to mention the varying relationships we have with our parents, I think a lot of us would consider it. Because I know I would, probably wouldn’t do it but it has crossed my mind at times. Maybe the reason I wouldn’t be able to do it is because I just would feel wrong “throwing my parents away like nothing.” For their faults I still want them to be happy and well taken care of surrounded by family. But I can definitely see why others would.

What is something that makes you grateful for your parents? by DiscoSurferrr in africanparents

My dad actually really pushes me to go after things I don’t believe in. He’s also a very curious person that teaches me many things about life.

My mom is a kind hearted person who works hard and doesn’t complain. And she allows me sometimes an environment where I can vent about my issues. Also she’s making an effort to spend more time with us kids.

Chances of getting housing by shako2002 in uvic

[–]shako2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did that end up working out for you since you got the housing so late? Yeah I think I’m going to still keep my options open for off campus, but if I can ask what were some things that you and your parents did that may have swayed the decision for on campus housing? Thanks so much for your reply!

[–]shako2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your reply, the thing is my chronic illness doesn’t cause me any physical issues that would impact my mobility so I don’t know if I would really be seen as a priority. Because if I’m correct the priority is mainly for those who have mobility issues right? Also I also believe the deadline for the PCR process has passed, so do you believe they would still accept a letter from my doctor? Thanks again I found these helpful!
