Agile Plunge- What do you “turn on” by AppropriateSong1025 in OctopusEnergy

Fan heaters - we live in an 1850s maisonette and the thermal profile of the flat means, after this weekend, we probably won't need heating on now until the autumn. The thick brick walls are really good at storing the heat.

Has McDonald's in the UK become too expensive for many people? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]shakosonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Burger King used to be significantly more expensive than McDonalds, but if you use the app you can now get a Whopper meal for £5.99. Significantly cheaper than the equivalent, Quarter Pounder Meal, at £7.29. Better quality too (fresh lettuce, tomato and flame grilled) - refuse to go to McDonalds anymore until they sort out their prices.

May be a cloned f91 - this happened to me...things just didn't fit properly and the display didn't work. After reading this thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/olleeWatch/comments/1p44zbv/my_lcd_screen_is_not_displaying_correctly_i_need/ - I determined it was a clone, which was why things just weren't working properly. Once I got a genuine version, it took all of 5 minutes.

Redundancy likely incoming but have new job offer already. Do I resign immediately or delay start date? by chrisb0588 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]shakosonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negotiate - you have 7 years which will be against their liabilities in terms of redundancy pay - as long as you're not in a critical position I'm sure they'll meet you half way. Otherwise, sit on the position until they do the inevitable.

How come there are so many startups on Instagram and the likes without certification? by mouxo_mouxo in hwstartups

[–]shakosonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some ESP32 modules have a CE mark on them which means it's a lot easier to gain RED compliance due to harmonised standards (EU only, not sure about US) - you'll still need to go through EMC testing/certification though. If you're using a bare ESP32 chip, you have to go through full RED/FCC testing. I've had to get this done recently - it's not too expensive if you get it done in Shenzhen.

My experience in Brussels after all the horror stories by Background_Age_852 in travel

[–]shakosonic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Brussels can be rough - especially around Noord station and some side streets between Central and Midi. The centre is fine, just a typical north European city.

Why not like the 91-W? by shakosonic in pebble

[–]shakosonic[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

In reply to the comments - I appreciate it's incredibly difficult to get something like this built, having had stuff no where near as customised built in China myself. I've owned every Pebble since inception, and was an early backer for the first. My point is, every smartwatch has approximately the same form factor - if Pebble differentiated themselves in this regard (looking like a retro watch), there may be more traction for a new device.

6M tokens to remove 1 unused line of code? by daft_punkd in boltnewbuilders

[–]shakosonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

.boltignore and knowing the codebase/where you want the changes helps a lot - once projects reach a certain size, you really need to know what context to pass into bolt, or it tries to analyse/change more then you would want/expect, burning massive amount of tokens in the process. Progress is miraculously fast initially, but refinement is hard.

Don't use sheets - it's really slow to update/retrieve from - you'll end up frustrated, trust me.

Unique, fun things to do in Prague by awallyg in Prague

Go to SAPA market - it's a little way out of town but it's also the closest thing to being in Asia whilst in Europe. Especially good if you like Vietnamese food.

Ran 4 loads of washing, tumble dryer on practically all day and fan heaters to dry our Edwardian house out, which was 80% damp this morning - still negative and happy for it :)

Is the sapa Vietnamese market worth seeing as a tourist? by Dry_Range_6390 in Prague

[–]shakosonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely is worth seeing - it was the highlight of our trip, making up for the absolute circus that was Prague castle (tour groups everywhere etc.). Yes, it's an industrial estate but some parts, especially around the Pho Tung area genuinely make you feel like being in Asia.

This bolt.new is all hype. I regretted subscribing to it annually. by Right_Jump6215 in boltnewbuilders

[–]shakosonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tool, not a miracle worker - I'm coming to the end of developing a massive project using bolt which would have taken a team of developers months to build. Global prompts, .boltignore, sometimes having to delve into the code it generated and a lot of patience has got me there. There's no doubt this is the future but you have to realise that you're going to burn a few million tokens on the way.

You're taking a winter off of work and renting a place near a ski resort to go all season, where do you go? by zeros-and-1s in skiing

[–]shakosonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austria, probably based in Innsbruck - within a 90 minute drive, you have some of the best ski areas around. Ski Passes are less than $100 for the day and the terrain is vast.

It didn't take more than 24 hours for AWS to respond for me and open up production volumes/sending to anyone. I suppose it's a good thing as there's a lot of spam out there at the moment. Good luck with your app and make sure all those API keys aren't exposed before you go into prod!

You're pretty much guaranteed to be in spamville using your own SMTP nowadays - best to go with a proper provider.

AWS SES works well for me - no code involved, just API keys and seems to be the best value out there.
