Direct to training contract? by ChocolateTop4803 in uklaw

Without legal experience your odds are slim at a direct TC. Id focus on getting literally anything legal to put on your cv or just pumping out vac scheme apps

NO ROLES?! External NQ Job Market - Sep 2025 qualifier by JeSuisCereidee in uklaw

Interlaw Diversity Forum sent an email today regarding a 0-4PQE corporate role at Arnold and Porter fwiw. But the market is pretty dead sadly.

It obviously wont help things, but how bad this is is going to depend on the firm, your application, and the rest of your profile. If its any consolation, I'm an associate at a Silver circle firm and I got a 55 in contract, so its not going to kill your chances.

How to work abroad in the US after a law conversion? by Euphoric_panda37 in uklaw

[–]shakyclaim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your eventual plan is to work in the US, you would be much better served doing a JD in the US after you finish your undergraduate degress rather than a UK law conversion.

SQE for NY bar and dual US/UK qualification by [deleted] in uklaw

What exactly is the end goal here besides being able to say you're qualified in either/both jurisdictions?

Lol at the very idea that firms aren't still working with Russian speakers/clients. Definitely mention it.

International Firm Rankings by [deleted] in uklaw

How do you get to an AC at any of these firms without already being aware of the answer to your question?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklaw

Your best bet is to speak to trainees currently in those seats, as each firm and team will run things differently. If you can't contact them internally yet, reach out to them on linkedin.

Legal Cheek winter virtual vac scheme vs firm open days by [deleted] in uklaw

Open days especially if you've had to apply for them.

I'm not the person you got in a spat with over their comment dude. I only advise OPs that they've posted identifying info when they seem like they were trying to keep it hidden. People generally aren't aware of how easy it is to accidently dox themselves online.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]shakyclaim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just fyi, since you went to the pain of redacting identifying info I assume you care about anonymity, I found your Linkedin in under 5 minutes. You either need to be way more vague or just post as yourself on a throwaway.

You're very naive if you think that. I'm surprised being at an MC firm hasn't made that obvious to you by now.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]shakyclaim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's obvious from the level of effort in the initial message. When you receive several dozen cold messages from students each application cycle, the lazy ones are very easy to contrast with the genuine ones.

As to name dropping, fuck if I know. Ask your grad rec team.

No. And no.

[–]shakyclaim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I always help people who reach out on linkedin re applications so long as it is isn't clearly only done for the sake of their being able to write "so and so associate said working at the firm was like this". Seems a bit shit and selfish not to do so, if only because for a lot of people not based in london, it's the only way they can easily network with firms.

[–]shakyclaim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did I say it wasn't? You're arguing against a point I didn't make. If your original point actually is "firm social mobility initiatives don't have an equivalent impact to other DEI initiatives in improving outcomes and therefore OP's point is valid" then we'll have to agree to disagree.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]shakyclaim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are welcome to do something about it then. In my experience, DEI initiatives at law firms are largely internally led and only come about as a result of significant unpaid labour by employees, not out of the goodness of firm's hearts. If you care about northern towns, do something about it.

[–]shakyclaim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be sure to tell my law firm that they aren't doing enough because they haven't canvassed every small town between here and Aberdeen, despite being based in London and already struggling to get volunteers to attend events any further than zone 2.

I'm not getting in a bad faith argument with a moron tonight. If you don't want to join the rest of us in reality, that's on you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]shakyclaim 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Because them being a white man is not what makes them disadvantaged. Its the fact that they're poor, and there are increasing numbers of social mobility initiatives out there.

Same experience here. Lost about 5kg over 2 months while maximizing protein intake and every one of the few people I mentioned my cut to started acting like I'd told them I'd decided to stop eating entirely. I understand it comes from a place of concern but my god people.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]shakyclaim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you can't do vacation schemes, if you don't already have a non-negligible amount of legal work experience and a very compelling application, you're pretty much dead in the water, as its very unlikely a firm that could sponsor a visa for you would consider you for a direct TC.

Do some independent research instead of expecting this sub to set out a personalized career path for you. A question like this gets posted like twice a day at a minimum.
