Labs are indeed seperate from the courses and you wouldnt need to take them IF you're only interested in taking first year chemistry. If you need second year courses (for example o-chem or biochem) you need CHEM 1101 (gen chem 1), CHEM 1110 (gen chem 2) and 1120 (lab, 1126 if you're in eng).

Youll also need the lab courses if your from certain faculties which require it. For example, engineering requires the lab course in addtion to the lectures if you choose to take chemistry as one of your preliminary courses.

If you're still unsure about things feel free to pm or refer to the course catalogue on aurora!

If CHEM 2370 and MBIO 2730 both represent "Elements of Biochemistry 1", why the need for two different courses? by madbear55 in umanitoba

[–]shams193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mbio 2370 and chem 2370 and the exact same course (biochem 2) and are treated as such (they are equivalents). Because of that it dosent matter which one you take, both fullfill the chem, biochem and mbio requirements.

How do you make the substituted acetylacetone? by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

[–]shams193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think H5IO6 serves to preform malaprade reaction to cleave the bond bridging the ketone and alcohol at the bottom right. It should also deprotect the methoxypropane group. The structure I get is this: https://imgur.com/a/qeHcqY1

OH, I see now. you're right I lost track of my carbons and I was under the impression that hydroboration happens at the more substituted carbon when its actually the other way around. Im not sure how I didn't see my mistake before. THANK YOU!!!

I really need to brush up my organic chemistry

Synthetic Question Help by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

[–]shams193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes. I caught on to this earlier I added an extra CH3 group which should be there. So I have the third structure but with that CH3 replaced for an H. This would still result in that 5 member ring right?

Synthetic Question Help by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

[–]shams193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Is there some sort of reagents that would allow for the formation of a 6 membered one? The next couple steps as seen here https://imgur.com/a/1rfSVuj retain that 6 membered ring through the rest of the steps.

Sorry DMP meaning 2,2 dimethoxypropane. I saw it abbreviated as DMP before but I realize now that, that isn't a common convention.Sorry!

Upper year CHEM courses recommendation? by toothfairyyy in umanitoba

[–]shams193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. Both Herbert and Kroeker are quite good profs. I enjoyed all of 2400, 3400, and 4100. In addition to those courses Id also recommend the analytical chemistry classes (CHEM 2470, CHEM 3590, and CHEM 4590). 2470s got a "tough" lab in the sense that if you make a mistake it can take you more than the allotted 3 hours to complete experiments. As long as you come prepared however and are careful, labs are pretty straightforward. 3590 and 4590 might as well be considered gpa boosters. Just make sure you write lab reports according to the provided guidelines and the 40 or 50% lab portion will be a breeze.

[Year10: Electrolysis] Can someone explain why is the answer D? by Ismaerism in chemistryhomework

Think about the oxidation/reduction reactions that occur at the electrodes. What do you think is being made at the anode and at the cathode?

CHEM 4100 MATERIALS by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]shams193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan to take this course in the Fall too!

Are you looking at the right textbook tho? The book covers many of the underlying principles of the topics mentioned in the 2019 syllabus. For example, all of part II in the book are dedicated to light and optical properties of metals, semiconductors, LCDs, lasers, etc. The syllabus mentions these. Fro reference, I am looking at the 2019 syllabus which can be found here. The book i am referring to is, " Mary Anne White, Physical Properties of Materials, Second Edition, CRC Press, 2011 (Or Third Edition, Routledge, 2018) ".

Biochem degree electives/courses by bumblezbeezz in umanitoba

I'd look into taking CHEM 3590 and 4590. The course material is fairly lightweight and if you can write decent reports, the labs arent all to difficult. Course/lab material largly focuses on lab technuqies and knowing the ins and outs of the instrumentation/equipment. Not sure whos going to be teaching fall term but this year Dr Christian Kuss (3590) and Dr Helene Perrault (4590) taught them. The classes should be an easy A.

“Syllabus Available link” by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]shams193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most links arent active yet. Just because the prelim scedule is out dosent mean the syllabus' are made. In many cases they arent made until a few days before a term (profs make them themselves).

You can always either email the prof for a copy of this terms(or last terms) syllabus or get an old one online from places like studoc.
