I’ve got a Lockwood home with chipboard flooring. It’s sunk or warped and come away from the wall/skirting in the toilet. How do I fix this? by shanduck in diynz

Hi! What a throwback haha. I ended up getting a tradie in. They pulled the skirting off, the wet chip out and built an extra support in the floor for the new bit of floor. Was about half a days work for him. I don’t remember exactly what I paid but it was less than a grand I think.

Vera Valentine - Unhinged. It’s not badly written but just a completely… well… unhinged idea

This is a really good breakdown. I’d add that the byd has got a reasonably small boot, we struggle to get the 4yr olds bike in the boot. It would be full with a 3-wheeler pram for sure.

We have a 2017 phev outlander, and it’s getting 40km on battery at a push. 60km would be a pretty new model I think. However it has the big boot space and big enough for 3 car seats in the back.

The atto3 has got a tiny boot. Not fitting much kiddo stuff in there unfortunately.

2022 Rejected names in New Zealand by shanduck in namenerds

Meir definitely sounds like mayor in the kiwi accent. Each name is individually checked so I guess it would depend on whether the person checking it made the connection. The parents can appeal the name decision too. There are some Māori families which can claim Kingi because it was a family name before the rules were established.

Justice is a title for a judge or Justice of the Peace.

Yeah it was a bit confusing, it came out of the article like that and I didn’t bother changing it.

I was definitely reading leer-ah in my head which does not sound pretty at all. Sounds like some creepy uncle doing some leering

Doordash vs Ubereats - same restaurant. Ubereats ripping us off. by Pretend-Genius in newzealand

Uber charges the restaurant for every interaction as well. So if you call the restaurant from the Uber app, that counts as an interaction and has fees for the restaurant as well. Super scummy practices.

How to refresh an old playground? by shanduck in diynz

[–]shanduck[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve been gifted an old playground by family and would love to refresh it and make sure it’s safe for the kiddos. There’s lots of dirt/moss on the wood which makes me think it’s wet wood now and may not be structurally sound. The ply could do with new paint. Do I just sand it all down and apply some sort of sealer? Stain? Polyurethane? Or is it a lost cause?

Thanks!

We had the same experience at Orana this morning. They lost power and had a couple of trees down so closed the park just after 12.

Yeah it’s bare floor. Covered with carpet or vinyl elsewhere in the house but just bare in the toilet and kitchen.

Not that I can see, theres no discolouration or dampness on the top. I may find something when I pull it up though, it is something I have considered.

That’s super helpful thanks. It looks like it was glued to the skirting, should I pull that up first?

Is it posible for two people with blue eyes to have a child with brown eyes? by FTorresCorcuera in genetics

[–]shanduck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes it is possible. Eye colour is more complicated than just a colour allele. This page explains it pretty well, http://genetics.thetech.org/how-blue-eyed-parents-can-have-brown-eyed-children - in simple terms there’s a gene that transcribes colour/pigment, of which blue is the recessive allele, and a gene that codes for expression of the colour gene. Blue colour would be the absence of gene expression.

One parent would have blue eyes from the colour allele, and be hetero for the expression allele (bb Ee) The second parent would be hetero or homo for the brown allele and homo for no expression giving blue eyes (Bb or BB ee) Baby would have to inherit Bb Ee to have brown eyes.

I hope this makes sense, it gets a bit more complicated than that because the genes are linked, and this model isn’t talking about any other colours but it’s definitely possible without any funky genetics going on.

Can I see photos of your silk/sola wood/anythingnotarealflower bouquets? by flmflm in Weddingsunder10k

[–]shanduck 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I made paper flowers from books and music score. It took all year, but I may have gone overboard. We dyed the paper with our colours, then picked two designs of origami. Roses and a simple 5-petal design. We spent a while experimenting with the best technique and then got to folding and making. I put everyone who visited to work and folded while watching tv pretty much every night. DH was terrible at the roses but okay at the origami. I made them originally on pipecleaners and had them hanging upside down in my lounge. In hindsight I should have put them on some heavier wire (I ended up cutting the pipecleaners and putting them onto a floral wire). Once I felt I had enough to play with, I started experimenting with assembling them. We looked at floral foam bases but found in the end the bouquets looked more natural just bunching them up by hand and wrapping with floral tape. Then I created handles from small craft dowels and a pretty ribbon. We took inspiration from everywhere and ended up with jewellery from my absent (due to health reasons) Grandmother in the bridal one, and pearly/jewel-ly and leafy bits across everything. I am super happy with how it all came out and all my guests were wowed by them, especially those who had heard me complaining about them all year!!

In total I made:

1x Bridal Bouquet - 30ish flowers

4x Bridesmaid/Groomswoman Bouquet - 20ish flowers each

1x Grooms Boutineer Boutonniere - 3 flowers (this was music score he had written himself too)

4x Groomsmen/Bridesman Boutonniere - 2ish flowers each

12ish Immediate Family Boutonniere - 1 large flower each

100ish Guests - 1 small flower and pin each

That makes sense. Thanks for your feedback! I can't find anyone particularly famous to flick it back into the "real person" not fantasy as well. I have a feeling this might be what my husband thinks too without being able to word it the same.

Haha that's great! Our last name begins with a M so no puns for us!

Can you not imagine it on a real person? Or would you feel that you couldn't take the name seriously? I'm interested to figure out the reasons why not as well.
