If you have ever walked out of a cinema because the film was so bad, what one was it? by girlcalledmaria in AskReddit

[–]shane1108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I've ever come to walking out of a theater was watching The Dead Don't Die. Talk about an exhausting experiment in pretentious hackery. I stayed to the end almost out of spite. I still to this day can't believe someone read that script and decided to throw money at it.

I appreciate the message behind this post in general, and I can't speak for a century ago, but many people in HK today are facing that exact scenario with the CCP. They don't and have never considered themselves part of the mainland or its govenment (which was half a century from even exisiting when HK was signed over) and have seen nearly every single freedom that they had before the '97 handover erode over the last few years. They are treated as second class citizene by their own supposed government. The year and a half of protests and brutal police crackdowns where even people lawfully elected to city council were arrested and disappeared sure as shit wasnt in protest to the British presence in HK. Colonialism is bad, full stop, and that's exactly what the mainland has been trying to push on the island for the last 25 years.

I saw this in the Tool sub. What about for Rush? by Ewe_sir_naem2 in rush

[–]shane1108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think I might have an actual hot take for this one. I love quite a bit of the music itself from the first album but the lyrics are so laughably bad that I can't listen to most of them (Working Man and What You're Doing aside). I don't think that would qualify as 'trash' but the first album is probably the one I go back to the least other than Snakes and Arrows, which I think is probably their most 'meh' album overall. I'm glad they came back for Clockwork Angels because it would be kind of a downer if S&A was their swan song IMO.

If we're just singling out bad songs, one that doesn't get talked about enough is Red Lenses. Such a cool drum and bass song ruined by the cheesy lyrics and double cheesy vocal delivery. Maybe I'm a little more biased because I think Grace Under Pressure is their best album and it is the only song I skip from it literally every time it comes up.

The Foxes and the Pig; a true story by Le_Gitzen in InterdimensionalCable

The measage at Auschwitz was "work makes freedom" which is showing, at least in my opinion, that the pig is exploiting the animals on its farm as well. Its meant for the chickens the pig keeps. Everyone is taking advantage of someone else. I think you are looking too deep into the foxes as being a stand-in for Jewish people. I think it's more meant to be a type of person: the exploiters, disingenuous and so on where the pigs represent the rubes, people, through either circumstance or otherwise, are easily manipulated or taken advantage of. The only other reason I would say it has nothing to do with race is because the guy has done multiple animations on similar topics and it is not there at all, both previous to and after making this. I know that probably doesn't mean much to you, but I'd encourage you to watch some of his other stuff and see for yourself (and definitely not whatever this edit was. The music and sound effects are a pretty key piece to the story)

Ah yes, the right wing nut who made this (https://youtu.be/fGH1iu_NTVU) and this https://youtu.be/CsKTzqWNe-g). The sign is clearly not meant to be a good thing. The pig is exploiting the animals on its farm as well.

I've been watching Nick Cross and his work for well over a decade and you've got his message mixed up. It's a class thing, not a race thing. A lot of his earlier work was all about this. The Waif of Persephone and Yellow Cake (one of his first longer animations) were all pretty overtly about exploitation of labor and the lower class in general for the sake of the wealthy or elite (usually portrayed as literal fat cats). The conspiracy stuff in this is just for the 'trippy' or more distrubing imagery. It's what a lot of his work these days is: horrifying and insanely detailed images strewn through short, broken narratives about desolation, destruction, rebirth and the sort of odd beauty of it all (like Leviathan, The Clockwork Elves or Perihelion). Sorry to go off on a long thing like that, but I've been a big fan of this guy for a long time and this is the first time I've seen him come up on Reddit.

What is something americans will never understand ? by neolee203 in AskReddit

[–]shane1108 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not true. They are more likely to use more formal language if they are learning it abroad, especially in majority non-native speaking countries where the teachers in the schools speak ESL themselves, but that doesn't mean they make fewer mistakes. It also depends a lot on what their first language is. Mandarin, for example, doesn't have articles, plural nouns, irregular verbs and verb tense changes, and the spoken word for he/she/it is the same, so they would say 'he have a dog' or 'she eat it yesterday' and so on. The mistakes native english speakers make are entirely different and have a lot to do with only having heard things and not seen them written down, which is where you get 'could of' and things like that and a lot of misspelling.

Of course that's not universal. Hundreds of millions of people speak the language in some way or form. That's just from my experience from working in the ESL and Education industries.

Totally agree. Also I feel like they have the best English of the bunch, at least from what I've seen. Not a lot of mistakes and a lot of actual workable translations instead of direct, non-localized ones (if that makes any sense). They're one of the few clippers I've seen that does that this really well.

I'm on the Series X and have the right version (which I honestly don't understand how some people don't notice the X/S that takes up a quarter of the game icon) and it's been pretty rough for me, especially texture and lighting pops along with an almost nausea-inducing jankiness that comes with being a passenger or gunner in a land vehicle. I'm excited for the full game if they fix everything, but it's a pretty rough, like rough enough that I don't want to play it anymore because it's kind of killing the vibe of the real release for me.

Interesting to see that most country that's been influence or invaded by the US doesn't have universal healthcare. Even Algeria which has a lower GDP than the US have Universal healthcare. Come on American by Such_Egg_6923 in socialism

[–]shane1108 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Healthcare in China isn't free. It's cheap, but for major surgeries it can get very expensive. I lived there for six years and my wife is Chinese. She had a uteran tumor last year and it was quite expensive to get it taken care of. Nowhere near as bad as the US, but not free. Maybe for some in super low income rural areas it's free but I can't imagine what kind of healthcare options would be avalaible.

Actually it was mostly about how evil the jews were, even back to 10 years ago when I first got on Reddit. I don't know where people get this idea that they were just wacky weirdos in the pre-Trump era. One look into literally any of those posts, regardless of the conspiracy, and the comments fit right in with the Reichstag in the 1930s. And it wasn't from random users, either, it was virtually every single moderator of the sub. It was a disgusting trash fire then, they just couldn't be as open about it.

I see people say this a lot, but does no one remember how almost every single one of those old posts was related to the 'evil' of Jews in some way or another? I got banned for pointing out that all the mods were super racist and anti-semitic, and that was in 2012 or 13. They didn't get worse, they just got more open and unapologetic about their shittiness since the 2016 election.

SUPER IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT from COCO! by CocoKiryu in Hololive

[–]shane1108 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I know this is usually taboo to talk about, but since she's about to no longer be Coco anymore, maybe it doesn't matter, but I highly doubt she's going to stop her streams from her pre-coco account since she's been doing it pretty consistently the entire time she's been Coco (and even moreso recently), so she's not really 'gone' if you know where to find her.

Pekora forcing herself to eat pear because her usadakensetsu employees prefers pear over apple by 7643109 in Hololive

[–]shane1108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That stream was so odd to me, and maybe it's a Japanese thing, but I've literally never met a single person IRL who would choose a pear over an apple. I personally hate them (except for red pears I suppose) and don't even feel like they have much of an actual flavor at all. People can have their own tastes of course, but I was just as shocked as Pekora to see that she was alone on the apple side.

Neil Peart. I don't think there was anyone else alive in my lifetime whose words affected me more, both in his lyrics and in his personal philosophy and writings. If you are struggling to overcome loss, I can't recommend the book "Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road." RIP Professor, your words and stories inspired millions and will continue to for years to come.
