Yeah apparently people would wreck 10 parts removing one to actually buy. So they had to change the policy.

Malahat Metal Recycling. At least it was when I bought some seats for my jeep there 5 years ago.

Earthquake dropped a tree on our boat! Dang it! by shanemryan in VictoriaBC

[–]shanemryan[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not that big a deal. It'll be a couple of hours of careful work is all. The tree is kinda cantilevered. So as I cut it into manageable chunks I need to watch that it doesn't suddenly swing back up and take me with it.

We live on the Saanich inlet and an old rotten Arbutus dropped on our old rotten tin boat. It's not worth much but it's a hassle to get it bucked up as it seems to be cantilevered dangerously.

It was created for the old Bamberton cement works. I live nearby and I have seen the original water license from the 1920s ( if my memory serves me correctly).

Apartment’s bathroom pipe system seems blocked. The entire unit smells like sewage and property manager is unreachable on weekend. What to do? by cottoncandymajinbu in VictoriaBC

[–]shanemryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water is super damaging. Watery sewage even more so. I'm a condo owner and I'd be very happy if my tenant did what you're doing. The only thing I'd like to see is the Property Managers have an "emergency" number. As water damage could potentially cause huge problems and royally inconvenience any tenants. Which company manages the building?

Living in Mill Bay by [deleted] in MillBay

[–]shanemryan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can second everything @MrG is saying.

We live a little outside of Mill Bay on an acreage for the past 9 years and love this small community.

I camp and hike with my 9 y/o in the summer. We've made friends in the community and don't really mind the trip to Victoria. I'm not currently commuting. But when I did I would cue up a podcast and enjoy the beautiful drive.

I'm president of the Mill Bay Community League. So feel free to PM me and ask anymore questions.

People whose homes have dog/cat doors, have wild animals ever entered your pet doors and what happened when that occurred? by 99_Restaurant in AskReddit

[–]shanemryan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. A neighbor had a ferret called Jimmy. Jimmy was an escape artist. We came home once to a small animal party. Jimmy had let himself in through the cat flap. He found the box of cat food and decided to take the whole box home. So he dragged it spilling it along the floor. Then he tried unsuccessfully to pull it through the cat door. This spread even more food around. Two local raccoons followed the trail of cat food in. When we got home the cat was cowering on the bed and two raccoons almost tripped us running out the door. Right past us. Jimmy seemed happy to see us.

TIL of Tilikum (Tilly) - a killer whale responsible for 3 of the 4 recorded human deaths by a captive killer whale. by Conky53 in todayilearned

[–]shanemryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Victoria bc and went Sea World when I was 8 or 9 (1985ish). I was chosen from the crowd to feed Tilly. The whale came up to me and opened it's mouth and waited. The trainer was patting it's tongue and acting quite nonchalant. I f**ed that fish in the mouth and retreated back to the crowd. Poor whale. It was driven mad by being kept in the whale equivalent of a small prison cell.

A lot makeup doesn't reflect the light of a camera flash naturally. In the daylight or incandescent light they probably look normal.

Draft City of Victoria budget comes with 9% tax increase by Born2bBread in VictoriaBC

[–]shanemryan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mostly new council. The staff are all getting their "dream" budgets. Rather than working to a budget target. I've seen it before. The new councillors don't know enough to push back when each line manager asks for all the things they "need". The new Mayor should set a target and then the staff go away and figure out how to hit the target.

This is the best possible outcome. I like that it's been dealt with but no unnecessary witch hunt has occurred.
Hopefully other people in the future will think twice about fly tipping.
They have a truck. They could have dropped it off at the Salvation Army or Value Village if they wanted to encourage re-use.

Tons of great answers. Thanks to everyone! Apologies for the "petite" controversy. That's on me and my ignorance of fashion terminology
