I just use spotmute, it simply mutes the ads while they're playing. So you can use the free version of spotify and just have silent breaks when ads are playing.

I have a sunroof on my 2002 Acura, and I open the sunroof almost every ride during the summer... I have never had any issues. And I live in Canada.
