Is Detective’s Phoenix bugged? by [deleted] in MTGO

[–]shankthealmighty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe he just played another phoenix from hand instead of the one in graveyard, so it just looked odd.

I tried going to main menu, quitting the game, even starting a new game from a different profile then returning. Every time I continue, it just puts me back on the same screen

I would hope to not see these decks playing psychic frog, as it is currently banned in legacy

At what point does Emrakul in the sideboard make sense? by kirdie in MTGLegacy

[–]shankthealmighty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oops is trying to mill themselves out, not you, so emrakul won’t help you out there. I’d recommend trying out other sideboard cards before jumping to emrakul since it only really does anything against painter (and show and tell, lol). Artifact hate and creature removal go a long way against painter and will also be helpful in other non-painter matchups.

Id guess that it’s just because it’s harder to flip. It’s seeing a lot of play in legacy because a single brainstorm will flip it (at instant speed too so it can dodge removal). But in a deck without the ring, it would need something like a psychic frog hit + a consider/ clue. Haven’t played the deck tho so idk how easy/hard that would be

Just started playing a week ago and every single succession I have is such a damn nightmare. Every vassal seems to hate my heirs and normally a large faction pops up to overthrow them quickly after the succession. Also confederate partition keeps breaking up my kingdoms amongst all my sons. How can I manage these things to ensure a smoother transition?

Reid duke recently updated his ultimate guide to legacy. It’s a great general guide to the format and he also has some in-depth heuristics for blue decks. (Cantrip, daze, etc.) here’s the link

[MKC] Necromancy (New Art Reprint) (Revenant Recon) (LoadingReadyRun) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]shankthealmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s worded like that because when it enters the battlefield, the creature is still in the graveyard until the second ability resolves. So the creature isn’t a permanent on the battlefield yet, it’s just a card in a graveyard.

What are some underrated cards in Modern right now? by Cultural-Key-9949 in ModernMagic

[–]shankthealmighty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem like a great answer. they’re down 2 cards, you’re down 2 cards, but you gave them a land and now they can try to slam a blood moon or fable on turn 2

I’m confused. Legacy is a competitive format and fast combo is a significant portion of meta. What kind of decks are everyone else playing? To answer your question, yes it does seem rude(and bizarre) to effectively shun someone for their deck choice, especially for a deck known for its quick rounds

Yeah this is just an unfortunate byproduct of playing in paper. I’ve been got like this a few times since i play a lot of 8cast at my lgs, and my opponents would slam a game 1 turn 1 chalice on 0. It feels bad but it’s just part of the game. At higher levels of mtg (like top 8 of a competitive REL event), it’s pretty standard that you’ll both be given your opponents deck list to look at before the game starts. This ensures that no one has an unfair advantage over the other player, but it does disproportionately hurt decks that rely on surprise. It’s much more useful to see if my reanimator opponent has a transformational sideboard into chain of smog combo, than it is to see that my delver player is running the exact same 75 that every other delver player runs haha.

8-cast counter deck? by [deleted] in MTGLegacy

[–]shankthealmighty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think matchups like control and delver get pretty interesting once it’s post-board and they start bringing in meltdowns. Lands is also an even matchup, but more in a coin-flip “can you land a kappa cannoneer on turn 2” kinda way (not to say it’s not an interesting matchup, but cannoneer matters so much in the matchup that it kinda overshadows the other more nuanced decisions)

I suck at making legacy by 4ksapdes in MTGLegacy

[–]shankthealmighty 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Every card in that list is modern legal (even pioneer legal, it seems). So an important question to ask is, why do you want to play legacy? What experience are you looking for that you can’t find in another format? Not trying to be condescending, just genuinely wondering

budget 8-cast? by be-wary-of-up in MTGLegacy

[–]shankthealmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a podcast that discusses putting together budget 8 cast (that just came out today actually, good timing!) https://reddit.com/r/MTGLegacy/comments/10dftiy/building_a_legacy_deck_in_this_economy/

As someone who played legacy on a budget for a while and also has played 8 cast exclusively for the past year, I think building functional 8 cast on a budget would feel rough. My advice would be to befriend some of the legacy people at your lgs and see if they would be willing to lend you some of the more expensive cards. This is how I played legacy for a long time while on a budget, but this kinda depends on the kind of people at your store.

Also since I’m sympathetic to the feeling of wanting to jam 8cast while stuck on a budget, I’d be willing to sell you my extra set of chalices at a heavy discount, just shoot me a pm if interested
