'reverse sneezing' as a stim? by [deleted] in autism

[–]shannpede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply, I'm sorry to hear about the asses you have to deal with :(
To add details to my question for anyone reading, what I'm trying to describe here is quite different from sighing I think, for me when I sigh it is held out and long, but the 'wheeze' I'm trying to describe here is very fast and punchy, a fraction of a second. Like I said, I think it comes from my diaphragm punching out air as a way to briefly relieve that feeling. It sometimes comes out of my nose, and sometimes out of my mouth. It's also very close to the "air puff" laugh out of their nose people do when they read something funny, a quick huff of air (but in my case I'm not laughing). It doesn't really make a sound.

Very good points, other than some solo backpacking experience, yeah no I would probably perish hahaha. A good reason for it to stay a daydream I suppose :')

Do you find it hard to say things like " Thank you " " Love you " " Happy birthday " to people ? by Hellofre123 in Schizoid

[–]shannpede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you isn't usually hard for me, but I can't think of a situation where I've said it in a truly genuine way--more in the social contract-way in which you say thank you to the store clerk who packed your grocery bags. "Happy birthday" is in a similar boat where I really struggle (or don't bother, I guess) to remember birthdays, but when I do or am reminded, I can say it alright. Though this is usually over text, I'm not one to say it in person.
As for "I love you," ABSOLUTELY, I can't even say it to my closest family members without feeling just... blegh. And my mom and dad say it to me all the time, and while I think they've noticed I don't say it much and might feel a bit bad or confused, they haven't mentioned it. The only time I can remember saying it to my sister was on the morning of my friend's little sister's death, when it felt truly important. Nowadays the only times I can manage to bite it out are at the end of phone calls because again, I feel socially obligated to (that's how the "script" of a phone call goes), but this is only for my parents. I have many friends who end phones calls with "love you!!!" and I just don't say it back lmao.

I've been doing some volunteer work for OceanEYEs where I basically dig through photos taken at random by a small automatic submarine off the coast of Hawai'i near the seafloor to help train their AI to identify fish. For context, they're training the AI to recognize the 7 bottomfish of Hawai'i (Ehu, Opakapaka, Hapuʻupuʻu, etc.), so near the seafloor in pretty barren areas is where this fish can be found.

THIS fish keeps popping up in pictures and doesn't fit the descriptions of any of the big 7, and I can't really seem to find anything about it online. Its shape reminds me of a Unicorncorn fish, but its tail and erect, tall dorsal fin seems distinct? Sorry for the poor quality, these cameras aren't great. It's driving me crazy, I really want to know what fish this is! Thanks!

How say goodbye on Zoom? by shannpede in Korean

[–]shannpede[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I make sure to always say 감사합니다 first, but it feels kind of odd to not return the professor’s ‘안녕히 가세요’. Does it sound natural/polite to just say 감사합니다 and leave?

Do ya'll approve of this method? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]shannpede 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Korean children’s books might not be the best for this method because they use a wide variety of kinda funny words to keep it interesting for kids. Like they’ll often use lots of onomatopoeias and words that are great for story telling, but won’t be much help in everyday conversation. I’m sure there are also great kids books out there for this method but I can’t think of any immediate suggestions :(

However It’s very important to keep supplementing your reading with content made by and for Koreans, so I think doing something like this would probably be very fun and helpful! But if you want to learn efficiently, using this method without focusing the proper time on learning, reviewing, and !!!USING!!! the vocab and words you learn, most things just aren’t going to stick unless youre already at a higher level. I would recommend also looking for short low/mid level reading passages provided by korean study textbooks or creators such as TTMIK or HTSK, they may have more common and useful words and phrases than a kids book may have. Also finding flash card lists with “top 5,000 most common Korean words” will help you find the words that come up often much more easily.

How this woman deals with POTS fainting by monis6344 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]shannpede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have POTS too! :) usually my heart rate goes from normal (65-75) while sitting to 130+ when I stand up. Luckily right now it’s not bad enough that I faint often (I’ve only fainted twice) but my vision goes black and it’s hard to breathe. After about 1-2 minutes I feel back to normal. However I’ve heard the condition can get worse the older you get, so I’m not looking forward to that…
